MIO MiVue 388 video recorder review and testing

IT-industry has gone beyond the concepts of “personal computer” and “laptop”. Technologies implemented in the PC can be found in a variety of gadgets. As far as possible we constantly try to introduce our readers with such innovations especially with tablets and mobile phones. However other devices are interested. Taking this into consideration this fact we have decided to focus on other digital technology which is well popular and high demanded. In this review we are going to consider video recorder and study the capabilities of MIO MiVue 388 model.

Design and operation characteristics

MIO MiVue 388

MIO MiVue Model 388 has a relatively compact size (71.5 x 65.3 x 22.9 mm) and medium weight (92 g). The case is made of hard plastic painted in matt black. The build quality is quite high which is important for devices operating in environments with high vibrations.

Almost the entire front side takes color screen of 2.4 inches, which for extra safety is closed with glass-reinforced plastic. At the bottom there are four control elements. They are used as menu button as well as confirm/cancel button. Buttons are fluted and slightly exceed outside housing. This solution is designed to make the usage of the device easier and more convenient especially while driving.

Above the display there is a LED indicator.

The camera lens is placed on the reverse side of the device. 3-Mpixel CMOS-sensor is used. It can record video at resolution 1920 x 1080 t frequency of 30 fps. Recording is done in the format .MOV with codec H.264. Also the model MIO MiVue 388 has the ability to take photos and record the sound. The microphone is located next to the lens.

Furthermore, the device is equipped with a motion and shock sensors. The first tracks the moving objects and if necessary starts shooting. This parameter will be useful when the driver leaved his car or left it in the parking. Shock sensor or G-Sensor monitors the car's speed-up along three axes. If there is a strong change of condition (for example, during the shock) the video recorder starts recording automatically to nonvolatile memory.

To avoid the occurrence of glares on the recorded video from the car window on a sunny day the manufacturer recommends the use supplied polarizing filter. However, in practice the use of it gives rise to doubt, since in addition to the installation you need to adjust its position relative to the sun.

MIO MiVue 388

All connections are arranged at the ends of the device. On the left side there are mini-USB and mini-HDMI interfaces, and on the right you will find power button and memory card slot. Standard microSD cards up to 32GB are supported. It will be more than enough for video recording even in the highest resolution (1920 x 1080). Manufacturer recommends to use the models of sixth class speed characteristics or more productive.

Also let’s remind that most mini-USB-cable is not supplied so you should purchase it separately.

MIO MiVue 388

A special holder should be used to mount model MIO MiVue 388 on the automotive glass. At the end it is equipped with a movable hinge. Using it you can rotate and tilt the device on 360°, in other words to configure the most optimal way for the user. The holder is fixed due to strong vacuum chuck.

MIO MiVue 388

However, in practice this fixation has disadvantages. For example, we could not fix the holder on inside surface of tint film which can be found at the top of the windscreen near the roof of the car. The vacuum chuck didn’t catch on the surface and the placement of the entire structure below the tinted strip has impairs the visibility. Of course, you can find other places to install the device such as the side of the mirror, but sometimes it may not be the perfect position.
