AMD A10-7850K APU review and performance testing

Compared with the family of APU AMD Richland new generation APU AMD Kaveri made a big step forward. In addition to the introduction of new microarchitectures AMD Steamroller and AMD GCN, the long-awaited transition to finer technology process took place. Do not forget about the addition of support for a number of technologies that in case of software optimization will help to significantly increase the performance and functionality of the system. Thus, APU increasingly more becomes a real competitor for a bunch of CPU + discrete graphics card. However, at the present time we can say only about entry-level configurations. But taking into account that to achieve this value AMD Company took only three years, we can say that the appearance of APU systems of higher class is not a long time ahead.

But the users ask the developer with a question why the manufacturer doesn’t introduces other models of APU AMD Kaveri. In fact, after the announcement of this lineup they have represented only two solutions: AMD A10-7850K and AMD A10-7700K. We have already learnt the model AMD A10-7700K and now we have the opportunity to evaluate the potential of CPU AMD A10-7850K.

APU AMD A10-7850K is shipped in a small box decorated in red and black colors of AMD Kaveri series. Inscription “Black Edition” recalls that this model has an unlocked multiplier I.e. a certain overclocking potential.

On the sticker there is information about processor frequency in turbo mode (4.0 GHz), the size of L2 cache memory (4 MB), the number of cores (12: 4 CPU + 8 GPU), a series of integrated graphics core (AMD Radeon R7 Graphics), as well as the presence of the standard cooler. On the sides the capabilities of technology AMD hUMA and microarchitecture AMD GCN are briefly described.

The box contains: user’s manual, cooler and the processor packed in a plastic blister for extra protection. There you can discover a logo sticker of series APU AMD.

Nominal cooling system of APU AMD A10-7850K is the same as described previously for AMD A10-7700K which is explained by the same level of TDP (95W) of both solutions. The cooler consists of a low radiator which is blown on by low-profile 70-mm fan. Radiator design is simple: aluminum core with four sections of the plates. The base is initially coated with a layer of thermal paste.

In practice, the nominal cooling system has a good mark. In idle mode the processor temperature did not exceed 27°C, and during the maximum load it did not exceed 45°C. Fan rotation speed reached 2500 rpm. At the same time the noise was at a comfortable level. Maximum fan rotation speed is 3500 rpm.

The design of APU AMD A10-7850K is the same as for AMD Kaveri lineup. On the heat-distribution lid there is the series name and model labeling. Also here you can find country of chip origin (Germany) and country where the final building was made (Malaysia).
The arrangement of contacts on the back side corresponds to CPU Socket FM2+. Let’s us remind that APU AMD Kaveri lineup is not compatible with Socket FM2.

During normal operation (technology AMD Turbo Core 3.0 is switched off) speed of AMD A10-7850K equals to 3700 MHz with a reference frequency of 100 MHz and multiplier "x37". At the moment of readout the core voltage was 1.392 V.

If you enable the mode of dynamic frequency increase using proprietary Turbo Core 3.0 technology the multiplier is increased up to “40”. CPU speed is increased accordingly to the level of 4000 MHz but the supply voltage is not changed. At the moment of readout its value was slightly lower (1.384 V) than in the previous case.

In idle mode the multiplier value is decreased to “x17”, thus the frequency drops to 1700 MHz. The voltage is 0,744 V. As you can see, the work of energy saving mechanism in APU AMD A10-7850K compared to the previous leader of AMD Richland family was slightly improved. Let’s remind that at the absence of load the multiplier of AMD A10-6800K was decreased to “x20” and voltage - to 0,888 V.

Cache memory of AMD A10-7850K is distributed in the same manner as for AMD A10-7770K:

  • L1 cache memory: for each of the 4 cores there are 16 KB for data with 4 associativity channels and for each 2 cores there is a module with 96 KB for instructions with 3 associativity channels;
  • L2 cache memory: for each 2 cores there are 2 MB with 16 associativity channels;
  • L3 cache memory is absent.

RAM Controller runs in dual channel mode and supports modules with frequency up to 2133MHz.

AMD A10-7850K model uses AMD Radeon R7 Graphics core.

It's no secret that the main reason of APU AMD popularity is a powerful graphics part. Realizing this fact AMD Comapny constantly increases its performance and features. A big step was made when the transition of iGPU to advanced microarchitecture AMD GCN took place. It is the basis of all modern graphics cards AMD Volcanic Islands.

However, in comparison with AMD A10-6800K, in addition to changing the microarchitecture, the graphics core of APU AMD Kaveri lineup has received additional 128 unified shader pipelines. The only parameter that AMD Radeon R7 Graphics is inferior to AMD Radeon HD 8670D (iGPU of model AMD A10-6800K) is the clock frequency 720 MHz vs 844 MHz.

However, according to information provided by the press center of AMD Company it does not prevent AMD A10-7850K to be a perfect solution for all modern games. Also thanks to the introduction of shared system memory (AMD hUMA technology) and heterogeneous queue (AMD hQ technology), 8 graphics core of processor AMD A10-7850K can work closely in conjunction with 4 cores and perform tasks better. Thus, in the case of the use of this mechanism the graphics capabilities of built in APU AMD Kaveri graphics can increase several times, including FPS performance in games. Don’t forget about the support of API AMD Mantle. In other words, iGPU of AMD A10-7850K model has a good potential with a proper optimization at the software level, while AMD A10-6800K cannot boast of such advantages.

Also we would like to remind that AMD A10-7850K supports Dual Graphics. Using it you can combine the capabilities of integrated graphics and discrete graphics card. AMD recommends to use adapter AMD Radeon R7 250 DDR3 (Oland XT).
