AMD A8-6500T CPU review and performance testing

Hybrid processors (APU) that integrate CPU and GPU cores and memory controller into one case are an attractive option for buyers. They allow you to build quite efficient multimedia PC computer and you do not need to purchase a graphics card.

In this review we’ll describe AMD A8-6500T model of AMD Richland line. There are two modifications of the present APU. The difference of these models is given in the following table:

As it can be seen from this material we learn power-efficient model with “T” index that has reduced power consumption due to lower clock frequency, wide operating-temperature range as well.

Packaging, set of delivery and  packaged cooling system

The box of AMD A8-6500T has white color and its design is quite ascetic and pleasant. On the front side you’ll see Company logo and stylized processor image with “A series” inscription. On the lower part there is a small scheme that demonstrated the presence of CPU and GPU cores in one device.

Side face has transparent opening that allows to see the design and country of origin. On the bottom there is a table with recommended combinations of discrete graphic accelerator and APU operating in AMD Dual Graphics mode.

One of side face contains a sticker with the following information: CPU model, its basic and max dynamic clock frequency. Also here is a protective hologram and product serial number.

Set of delivery is well standard and includes:

  • cooling system;
  • user’s manual;
  • sticker for computer case.

Packaged cooling system consists of two parts: fan and small aluminum cooler. Foxconn PVA070E12L model with dia 70mm is used as a cooler. Its working voltage is 12V and current strength 0,20А. The connection with motherboard is carried out via 4-pin socket. This gives the opportunity to control fan blades rotation speed by PWM-method and realized the monitoring.

The cooler contacts with CPU via thin leyer of thermal paste and has very simple construction: it is made of aluminum and doesn’t have copper core. Taking into account quite low TDP level even such simple cooling system will be more than enough.

The main information over the case is indication of APU marking (AD650TYHA44HL) and country of origin. The chip is made in Germany while final assembling in China.  Set of contacts on the reverse side is compatible with CPU sockets Socket FM2 and Socket FM2+.

As we can this processor has quite a big gap between minimal (2100 MHz) and maximal (3100 MHz) clock frequencies. This wide range allows to choose the optimal mode depending on current load that plays a positive role regarding power consumption.

Data provided by the program CPU-Z 1.69 during stress testing by LinX utility confirm the above said. In the basic mode AMD Turbo Core 3.0 technology was used and clock frequency most of the time were around 2794 MHz index with a multiplier “x28” and core voltage 1.160 V.

In many cases the CPU clock frequency was decreased to the level of 2100 MHz, or increased to a maximum 3100 MHz. All changes of the clock frequency during various testing stages can be evaluated on a graph performed by AIDA64 program.

In idle mode the multiplier index was dropped to “x14” and the frequency at the moment of reading was around 1397 MHz. Supply voltage was dropped to 0,856 V and the core temperature - to 23°C.

Cache memory in AMD A8-6500T is the same as for other productive APU of AMD Richland lines, including the leader AMD A10-6800K. In particular, it has 16 KB of cache-memory per core with 4 associativity channels for data caching and 64 KB per each of the two dual-core modules with 2 associativity channels for instructions. Also there is a 2 MB L2 cache-memory with 16 associativity channels per each dual module. Cache-memory in L3 is absent.

RAM Controller runs in dual channel mode and supports DDR3 modules with frequency up to 1600MHz.

Utility GPU-Z 0.7.7 could not correctly identify all key features of AMD Radeon HD 8550D integrated graphics core. The exact value were its frequency (720MHz), the usage of 64-bit memory bus and OpenCL DirectCompute 5.0 instruction support.
