Processor AMD Athlon X2 370K: review and performance testing

Until AMD Company has not introduced new desktop processors of the AMD Athlon lineup for the platform AMD Kaveri, the most popular on the market are their counterparts of family AMD Richland. In one of the previous materials we examined quad-core model AMD Athlon X4 740 which belongs to the price segment of $ 75. In the present review we will focus on dual-core AMD Athlon X2 370K.

In fact, it refers to the range of APU, but because its graphics core is disabled, the manufacturer has transferred this CPU in the range of AMD Athlon. We note that it belongs to the budget solutions segment in the category of $ 55-60. In this niche its key competitor is a dual-core model Intel Celeron G1850 based on the 22nm microarchitecture Intel Haswell. Will the 32nm AMD Athlon X2 370K tocompete with the technically more advanced processors?
We will start with the traditional characteristics.

The letter "K" in the name of the CPU means that it has an unlocked multiplier. This fact makes it a good candidate for overclocking and we'll check it in testing.

The processor is sold in a small cardboard box painted in dark gray color. On the front side there is a logo of AMD Athlon series, and indication about the support of the connector Socket FM2 and the need to apply the discrete graphics card.

Package of AMD Athlon X2 370K includes:

  • cooling system;
  • brief instructions on installing the CPU and cooling system;  
  • sticker on the computer case.

On the front side of the case you can notice: the name of the model, marking and country of production (the chip is produced in Germany, and the final assembly is made in China). On the reverse side there are contacts that are compatible with socket Socket FM2. Let’s remind that if you have a new motherboard with CPU socket Socket FM2+, you can easily install AMD Athlon X2 370K. The reverse compatibility (CPU with built-in Socket FM2+ and a motherboard with Socket FM2) is not supported.

Note that the contacts are made of a fairly soft metal, namely copper. In this regard, the installation of the processor into the socket and fixation of the cooling system must be done very carefully.

Complete cooling system has a rather simple design, which we have already seen in the reviews of other solutions of AMD Athlon and AMD A. There is a small aluminum radiator, which is in contact with the processor through a thin layer of thermal paste.

Fan Cooler Master FA07015L12LPB is attached to the top due to four screws. It is based on a ball bearing. It has a diameter of 70 mm and an operating voltage of 12 V and a current of 0.25 A.

The fan is connected with motherboard via a standard four-connector, thus it supports PWM speed control method of the blades.

Performance analysis

At full load and mode enabled mode AMD Turbo Core 3.0 the operating frequency of the AMD Athlon X2 370K was increased to 4200 MHz with a multiplier “X42” and the reference frequency of 100 MHz. The voltage on the cores varied from 1.200 V to 1.408 V.

If you disable function AMD Turbo Core 3.0, the value of the multiplier goes down to "x40", and the CPU frequency is 4000 MHz at a voltage of 1,352 V.

In case of load absence the processor goes to the idle mode, and its frequency is lowered to 2000 MHz with the multiplier "x20". Also core voltage is significantly reduced: at the moment of reading it did not exceed 0,976 V.

Now let's look at cache memory distribution in the model AMD Athlon X2 370K. For example, to data caching there is 6 KB of L1 cache per core with 4 channels of associativity, and 64 KB of shared L1 cache with 2 channels associativity is designed for instructions. In addition there is 1024 KB of L2 cache. The given processor is not equipped with L3 cache.

AMD Athlon X2 370K is equipped with a built-in memory controller that supports dual channel mode of DDR3 memory modules with frequency 1600MHz.

Testing  

 

First of all let us analyze the effect of the activation of the technology AMD Turbo Core 3.0. Let’s remind it leads to an increase of the processor frequency in the dynamic mode to 200 MHz (maximum 4000 MHz to 4200 MHz). Performance growth is 1-2%. It is not quite so essential, but we are dealing with the decision of the low-cost level.

Of course, we would like to compare the performance of the hero of this review with the AMD Athlon X2 340, since it is significantly cheaper. Therefore, it would be interesting to know how is justified the overpayment. Since we did not test such solution, we choose two the most similar in price solutions: AMD Athlon X4 740 and AMD FX-4300.

The main advantage of AMD Athlon X4 740over the AMD Athlon X2 370K is a quad-core, as well as a much larger cache sizes at different levels. It is not surprising that in a direct comparison it could get ahead by an average of 55%.  

AMD FX-4300refers to the platform Socket AM3+, which is designed to build productive working or gaming systems. It has four cores and L3 cache. Such advantages have allowed this processor to get ahead by an average of 80%, but the cost of this solution in some cases is twice higher. Also it is different due higher level of TDP (95 versus 65 W).

We’ve chosen two solutions of the processor: Intel Celeron G1820 and Intel Pentium G3220. The first passes ahead the hero of this review on average by 27%, and the second - by 42%. The average cost of Intel Celeron G1820 is only $ 45, and Intel Penitum G3220 belongs to the range of $ 65-70. Nevertheless, taking into ccount the presence of an integrated graphics core and such a significant advantage in the performance of processor cores, they look more interesting in the parameter "price/performance." However, you should not forget about the “hidden weapon” of AMD Athlon X2 370K, i.e. the unlocked multiplier, which should provide excellent overclocking potential.

In general, using such basis you can build a well-balanced computer that can cope not only with the undemanding office tasks, but also allow you to run modern games. But for this you will need to purchase additional middle range graphics card.

Now let's examine the graphs of processor heating using our bench cooling system.

As you can seen, at full load the CPU clock speed varied from 4000 to 4200 MHz, and the core temperature as indicated the sensors does not exceed 36°C. Heating is quite low, so complete cooling system would be sufficient for everyday use.

Overclocking

AMD Athlon X2 370K has good overclocking potential as its multiplier is unlocked. In the process of overclocking, this value was raised to "x47". Also, the voltage was increased up to 1,512 V. Meanwhile, the basic frequency did not change its index 100 MHz. As a result, the frequency of the CPU was increased to 4700 MHz. In this mode it passed the test LinX 0.6.4without errors, which indicates about its stable operation. In this case, the CPU temperature did not exceed 60°C (using a bench cooler). As you can seen, during overclocking process the heating is increased significantly, so it should not be carried out on a fairly simple complete cooling system.

The results achieved in the result of manual overclocking can be estimated in the following table:
