AMD FX-8320E CPU: review and testing

For a long time AMD did not please their fans by radically new solutions in the segment of high-performance processors. And after itsr rival has introduced the platforms Socket LGA1150 and Socket LGA2011-v3, some people began to charge it off.

However many times AMD was predicted to death and oblivion, that such pessimistic moods are perceived as something ordinary. Many people forget that in order to remain relevant product on the market, it does not necessarily to have the highest performance or to be released recently. Smart pricing can often reverse the technological gap. This is what we can now observe in the processor market, where solutions of the "old" computer family of AMD Vishera are still very popular and sold well.

In addition, the game developers did bustle and remembered that modern processors are not limited to 2 cores, and began to work towards for optimizing their projects. The first products can be already seen in games like Battlefield 4, Far Cry 3, ArmA 3 and Assassin's Creed 4. Apparently, the trend will continue.

All of this continues to hot up the users to processors of AMD, which in turn even prompted the manufacturer to provide three new solutions: AMD FX-8370, AMD FX-8370E и AMD FX-8320E, based on the well-known microarchitecture AMD Piledriver. We suggest to start the familiarity with the youngest model in this list AMD FX-8320E.

The processor comes in a small cardboard box decorated in corporate style. The abundance of black color and the inscription «Black Edition» show that the inside is a CPU with an unlocked multiplier. The possibility of optimization of its parameters indicates the phrase «Achieve ultimate power with up to 5.0 GHz and 8 cores». Frankly, acceleration up to 5 GHz for the model which in the nominal mode operates at 3.2 GHz is a pretty bold statement. While on the other hand, the top-end 8-core of family AMD Vishera took even higher marks, why the model AMD FX-8320E cannot do the same?

Information about the main characteristics of the processor as always is focused on a sticker with a bar code.

The box contains:

  • processor packaged in plastic blister for extra protection;
  • cooler;
  • user manual;
  • sticker with logo of series AMD FX.

As we mentioned above, the model AMD FX-8320E belongs to the family of AMD Vishera. Therefore, the location of the contacts on the back side is fully consistent with Socket AM3 +.

The heat-spreading lid has the name of the series (AMD FX) and labeling of model (FD832EWMW8KHK). Also are shown the countries where it chip was grown (Germany), and the final assembly of the processor (Malaysia). The mark "2011" once again confirms the view that the AMD FX-8320E is not a new decision, and based on the previously developed technologies.

However, we cannot say that AMD is in the face of AMD FX-8320E has just released a complete copy of the AMD FX-8320. At least just look a cooling system. Reduction of TDP up to 95 W eliminated the bulky cooler with copper heat pipes of AMD FX-8320. That is at least the final cost of the "box" version of the AMD FX-8320E is reduced.

As for the design features of cooling system, you will not find anything new: standard aluminum radiator with a square base with attached four fin sections and low profile fan. This variant of the cooler was tested on other 95 W processors of AMD, so there is no doubt about its capacity. However, in terms of the indicator "noise/cooling efficiency" it will yield to more productive solutions from third-party manufacturers.

For comparison we provide photo with the standard cooling system of CPU AMD FX-8320E (right) and its analogue for models with a TDP of 65 W (left). So if you think that in this case the manufacturer was greedy, we hasten to calm you - it's not so bad.

To blow the fins is used 70-mm fan Foxconn PVA070F12H with fairly high power 5.04 W. According to the marking, it is based on a hydrodynamic bearing, which is more reliable and durable than conventional sleeve option. Connection the fan to the motherboard is realized by using 4-pin connector that is fully supported by advanced control algorithms for its speed.

Performance analysis

During normal operation, the speed of AMD FX-8320E is equal to 3200 MHz with a reference frequency of 200 MHz and multiplier "x16". At the time of reading the core voltage was 1,104 V. Of course, we would like to see a decrease of TDP from 125 to 95 W without falling speed of the processor. However, as we can see engineers of AMD could not perform this action. Although the difference in the nominal frequency is only 300 MHz (recall for AMD FX-8320 it is equal to 3500 MHz), which in principle is not too much.

Moreover in the turbo mode and using the technology AMD Turbo Core 3.0 the speed of AMD FX-8320E is the same as for its predecessor 4000 MHz. On reaching this frequency the multiplier is increased by 4 points to the value "x20", and the voltage to a point 1,248 B. Unfortunately, we did not have model AMD FX-8320, so we cannot compare this figure.

Speaking about the turbo mode, it is worth to make one important clarification: the speed 4000 MHz is achieved only occasionally and at very low load. Launch of demanding process immediately leads to a drop in frequency to the level of 3500 MHz, and sometimes even lower.

This can be clearly seen on the graphs produced during the passage of the stress test AIDA64 Stress CPU. Throughout the experiment the speed of its operation ranged from 3200 - 3500 MHz, while the voltage was 1.056 - 1.404 V.

In this mode of operation AMD FX-8320E was warmed up to a maximum of 41°C (using a bench cooler Scythe Mugen 3), which is a pretty good result. It is interesting to note that during testing of 65 W AMD A10-7800 the same value was recorded. So we can conclude that either the APU TDP level is too high (which is highly unlikely), or in the AMD FX-8320E it is below 95 W. Whatever it was, this situation only benefit the user. As you can squeeze out more megahertz of processor without having to buy too expensive cooling systems.

In idle mode the multiplier is reduced to a value "x7", thereby the frequency is lowered to 1400 MHz. In this case the voltage is 0.840 V.

Cache memory of AMD FX-8320E is distributed in the same manner as for another 8-core solutions of family AMD Vishera:

  • L1 cache memory: for each of the 8 cores there are 16 KB for data with 4 associativity channels and for each 2 cores there is a module with 64 KB for instructions with 2 associativity channels;
  • L2 cache memory: for each 2 cores there are 2 MB with 16 associativity channels;
  • L3 cache memory: for all core there are 8 MB with 6416 associativity channels.
