ASUS MB168B+ monitor review and testing

If we compare the laptop with your desktop PC, of course its main advantage is mobility. However, you will sacrifice by the performance of the device. And if the laptop can have powerful and energy-efficient components, it is impossible to do something similar to the screen, since the size of the display cannot physically exceed the dimensions of the device in which it is installed. How we can increase the screen space? Obviously, the use a stationary monitor with wide screen is not the best option, since the mobility is lost. So what we will do? The company ASUS and some other manufacturers have the answer - a portable monitor. Sounds a bit strange, but on the other hand why not? After all, due to a small weight and size you can take it anywhere. In addition this monitor can be used for other purposes, such as to show presentations in the office or for watching movies.

Today, the arsenal of ASUS has two devices of this kind: ASUS MB168B and ASUS MB168B+. The main difference between them is the maximum resolution. Portable Monitor ASUS MB168B+ can display a picture in a format Full HD (1920 x 1080), while the ASUS MB168B - only HD (1366 x 768). In this review, we have a more detailed look at the first one, that is, the model ASUS MB168B+.

We received the test sample, so there is no description of the box. Set of delivery includes leather case-stand, USB 3.0 cable, user’s manual, and a CD with drivers and software. Note that these components are sufficient for the full operation of ASUS MB168B+. You should not purchase any additional cables.

Design and operation properties

Since the model ASUS MB168B+ belongs to the class of portable monitors, the design in this case is very important. Apparently, the same view has ASUS Company. Externally, the device looks very elegant and looks like the increase tablet than on a laptop monitor.

Almost the entire front panel covers the screen with a diagonal of 15.6", which supports the output image with format Full HD (1920 x 1080). It is framed by a wide plastic frame with a rough matte surface, allowing the monitor easy to handle or be moved from place to place. Under such conditions the absence of gloss of surface is welcome.

The reverse side is covered by the thin metal plate with a very high-quality treatment. At first we even thought it was plastic covered with film, but tactile feel say the opposite.

We also want to pay attention to the thickness of the case which is only 8 mm, which only emphasizes the refined style of the device. In this regard the model ASUS MB168B+ even looks like a series of ultrabooks ASUS ZENBOOK: the same thin and light (800 g). Thus, the monitor is beautiful and practical, which is a big advantage for a portable solution. The build quality is at a very high level: no defects in the testing process were found. In general we have only the most positive experience.

The connection to the laptop is provided via supplied cable. On the one end there is a USB 3.0connector, while on the other - the same USB 3.0 but in format Micro-B. This cable at the same time is used to power and video signal. Its disadvantage is the relatively short length of 70 cm. Especially it will be felt while using the monitor in a vertical position. While, if necessary, you always can buy longer cable or use an adapter.

Control elements are represented by two buttons. The first is responsible for enabling the device, and the second (designed as a rocker) is used to regulate the brightness of the screen.

Slightly higher on the same side of the case is the USB 3.0 of standard Micro-B. In principle, the model ASUS MB168B+ can be connected to the connector USB 2.0, but in this case it may lead to decrease the brightness of the screen, as well as decrease the image quality. Therefore, we recommend to use a faster interface USB 3.0.

The additional options include the light sensor, which copes with its task. In a dark room the screen brightness is automatically reduced, and in the light on the contrary, increased.

Also inside the ASUS MB168B+ has a sensor that monitors the position of the monitor. The change of orientation of the picture from portrait to landscape and vice versa is realized automatically. If necessary, the two sensors can be disabled via the utility ASUS EzLink.

Since ASUS MB168B+ is a portable monitor, of course, the traditional leg is absent. Stand is the cloth-leather case. It is a very good idea of the manufacturer, since it eliminates the need for additional structure which would hold the monitor in vertical position.

Thanks to the curved edge of the cover ASUS MB168B+ is securely mounted on a stand. Even small pushes will not overturn it. Also you won’t face with rocking. Note that all of the above is true for both horizontal and vertical position of the monitor. In addition, the stand-cover has two positions of device fixation: angle f approximately 5 and 15 degrees.

As a result the work with ASUS MB168B+ is very comfortable. It serves as the means of additional output. Especially if the source of signal is a device with a much smaller size of the diagonal, such as netbook.

Testing
Portable monitor is not the analogue with a stationary device, so it is logical that there is no on-screen menu and a large number of preset profiles. There is only one mode, which is presented in the form settings of defaults. For convenience let's call it "Standard".

Before proceeding to the analysis of the results and graphs, we want to clarify that it is necessary to make correction for the class of the monitor and its scope. Thus, in the specification the manufacturer declared maximum brightness level of 250 cd/m2, but in practice, this figure was lower and reached only 184 cd/m2. Although it should be said that such a value would be enough for comfortable work in almost any type of exterior lighting. Problems may arise only in a very bright room or direct sunlight falling on the screen.

As for the coefficient of static contrast, the result 629:1 is consistent with the claimed 600:1. It's a pretty good index even for stationary monitors, so the display ASUS MB168B+ will provide the picture with reach and saturated colors.

No less important parameter in this case is the level of energy consumption. In standard mode (100% brightness) it reaches 6.7 W. In our opinion, for a portable device with a size of 15.6" this figure can be considered as quite acceptable.

Now let's see the color rendering parameters.

Color gamut of sRGB space was 73.5% which is quite satisfactory result in comparison with stationary solutions. You can notice a lack of color range on the green, turquoise, red and pink colors. Therefore, for the page-proof or professional graphics the model ASUS MB168B+ is not suitable. On the other hand, it is not intended for this purpose. The scope of its application supposes the output of presentations, graphics, video and other information of this kind, and for this purpose the obtained value is quite enough.

The diagram of main color and hue deviations from references has pleasantly surprised. Taking into account the relatively small color gamut, we expected to see the solid red stripes. But in reality it is much better. The average deviation dE*94 (ΔE) is 2.02, which is only slightly more than the allowable value of 1.5. As for the maximum deviation dE*94 (ΔE), here the result is even better: 3.87 with an acceptable indicator 4.

This once again confirms sounded above opinion that with the output of the office graphics and video the model ASUS MB168B+ will cope with no visible distortion of the primary colors.

 The graph gamma curves have clearly visible problems with the blue component. It will have negative effect to the average value which is equal to 1.98, while the reference is 2.2. As a result, the picture will look a little lighter than it should be. Also you may notice the loss of detail in the shadows of objects, especially if their predominant blue color (for example, some of the scenes with nature). However, the relatively high level of static contrast should hide this disadvantage, and to the user's eyes in most cases it is unnoticed.

Also problems with the blue component are observed in the graph of RGB levels. This channel is highly overstated, which would give the whole picture "cold" color.
