iiyama ProLite XB2483HSU monitor: review and testing

Matrix types IPS and PLS are very popular among manufacturers of monitors because of the good value of cost and opportunities. However these solutions are not universal, because in narrow areas they may not always provide the necessary characteristics. For example, models based on a TN matrix are better suited to play dynamic games in the style of «Action». If we talk about monitors for professional work, here the PLS and IPS have an alternative in type of VA («vertical alignment»). This type of matrix provides a deeper or more correct black color. Besides the image contrast and color rendering is improved. Of course, it has drawbacks, however, in modern VA-solutions they are minimized. One of the newest version of the matrix VA is AMVA+, which has solved the problem with small viewing angles. Therefore, it is possible that in the near future, many monitor manufacturers will pay attention to this solution. At least, the Japanese company iiyama has already done it and even provided in the market sevral monitors with this technology. We decided to start the acquaintance with products with a 24-inch model iiyama ProLite XB2483HSU.

iiyama ProLite XB2483HSU comes in a cardboard box which provides protection against shocks and possible mechanical damages. It provides the information about the capabilities of the monitor:

  • Native Resolution: 1920 x 1080 – support for Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080);
  • Video Inputs: VGA (D-Sub) / DVD-D / HDMI - video inputs are presented by interfaces VGA (D-Sub), DVD-D and HDMI;

  • Plug & Play VESA DDC 2B - the availability of standard VESA 100 mm mount.

In our opinion it would be better if the package mention other characteristics of the device. We are talking about the type of used matrix (AMVA+), the diagonal of the screen (24") and supporti of technology Flicker Free.

Iiyama monitors are often criticized for their homogeneous design. Someone calls it stereotyped, someone even dull. But in our opinion, the most appropriate designation in this case is strict. Against the background of frameless solutions with glossy panel model iiyama ProLite XB2483HSU does not look very impressive. Although we cannot that it will spoil the interior of the room.

Monitor case is made of thick durable black plastic. Panel surface is matt sometimes with a rough texture. It is interesting that in this case the matrix coating is semi-gloss. Mirror effect is available, but it is much less than that of devices with full glossy screen. Anyway it did not cause complaints during testing.

We were pleased with the build quality of the case: all panels are qualitatively processed and fit tightly to each other. The power supply is housed inside the monitor. As a result the model iiyama ProLite XB2483HSU is wider than its relatives with an external AC adapter. Despite this, it can not be called a very heavy: weight with stand is only 5 kg. After uncoupling of stand and leg you can access the mounting standard VESA 100 mm. As a result, the model iiyama ProLite XB2483HSU will be fix on the wall without any problems.

Functional leg extends the capabilities of the monitor. It has just degrees of adjustments. Here the user can adjust the angle of the screen (-5°...+22°), its height adjustment (0...+130 mm) and space orientation (portrait / landscape).

Also, it is possible to rotate the monitor around its axis by 45° in the clockwise and counter-clockwise direction. Stand with a large base makes the model iiyama ProLite XB2483HSU fairly stable on the table, and the use of a metal structure in the leg eliminates display rocking. In this regard, the frameless design solutions lose in favor this monitor. In the lower part is a hole for accurate laying of PC cables.

Video connectors are presented by topical analog port D-Sub (VGA) and digital interfaces DVI-D and HDMI. The maximum resolution is 1920 x 1080 at a frequency of 60 Hz. In this case the type of used interface does not play any role.

Multimedia functionality of iiyama ProLite XB2483HSU is expanded due to the headphone output and built-in speakers with total capacity of 4 W. Audio transmission can be realized via a video or HDMI connector on the PC sound card. Selection of the sound source is carried out in the OSD.

Built-in speakers sound quality is acceptable, although the low frequency is not enough. In any case, their capacity is sufficient not only for the sound of the video from the internet, video calls or video conferencing, but also for listening to music in the workplace. However, for more serious problems you should use external speaker.

Also the model iiyama ProLite XB2483HSU can boast of the presence of two ports USB 2.0, which are placed on the lateral end of the body and have very easy access.

Perhaps the only decor element is a plastic overlay on the bottom of the monitor. It has brushed metal style. Display control is performed in the traditional way by using the five buttons (also it is used to power the monitor). As always, most of the buttons has a dual function: to navigate in menus and quick access to the main parameters of the monitor and applied technologies.

Design of OSD menu is archaic and has not very convenient structure. Instead of tabs each group of settings is opened in a new window. Thus it is necessary to keep in mind the level menu that at first may confuse the user, especially if he had never experienced in configuring monitors.

Regarding the capabilities of the menu, there are no any claims. Traditionally is proposed to set the brightness, contrast and color temperature. Also there is the possibility to manually balancing the key colors (red, green, and blue).

In the submenu "Other Settings" you can find the options to control the technologies such as “Overdrive”, “Adv. Contrast” and “Sharpness". In order to select the preset modes you have to close the OSD and press «Exit» on the monitor. This will open a window «i-Style Color» with the plant profiles.

Like most modern monitors the tested model supports technology which at the hardware level increases the sharpness of the image. Here it's called as «Sharpness». Its operation in practice can be analyzed as an example the following pictures.

This function copes with its task. The difference before and after the activation can be visible to the naked eye. Thus, when reading text from scanned pages and photos or while increasing of the pictures with bad clarity the option "Sharpness" can be quite useful. However, in games and other applications using its built-smoothing method, it is better to be disabled (value "5").

Model iiyama ProLite XB2483HSU has recorded six modes: "Off", "Standard", "Game", "Cinema", "Landscape" and "Text". First of all let’s look at the performance of profiles obtained during the test, and then the basis of the graphs in more detail to analyze the results. Also note that for testing we've got the monitor from the batch «AB» of revision «R105B02». We do not exclude the possibility that the market may have other variants of this model. Therefore we cannot compare the results from different revisions of iiyama ProLite XB2483HSU.

The maximum recorded brightness level was 287.6 cd/m2, which is even more than the declared value of 250 cd/m2. Fans of bright images will be satisfied. For conventional lighting we recommend to reduce this option the level of 150-200 cd/m2, or use the profile "Landscape". If you spend a lot of time in front of the computer, we advise to set an even lower value or use mode "Text". It is not a perfect reading mode (too high values of contrast and color temperature), but will still allow slightly reduce eye strain.

The main difference of iiyama ProLite XB2483HSU from competitive models is to use a matrix type AMVA+ instead of the traditional IPS or PLS. It provides a more accurate and deep black color with all its attendant benefits. One of them is expressed in a large static contrast ratio, which in this case fluctuates within the mark at 2950:1. In modes "Landscape" and "Text" its value is reduced to 2323:1 and 1353:1 respectively. However, for many solutions with IPS and PLS even these figures often remain inaccessible, including for top models. Also, don’t forget that instead of the matte finish is applied semi-gloss variant. Due to this the so-called crystal effect will be reduced to the minimum and it will improve image clarity. As a result, the monitor iiyama ProLite XB2483HSU can be used to have juicy picture with vivid colors.

This model has a slightly higher level of energy consumption (about 25 - 28 W) than competitive 24-inch solutions. However, the extra few watts are unlikely to greatly affect the electricity bill. Although, if you ask for saving energy, you can use the function «Eco». Its activation leads to the reduction of brightness to 20% and energy up to 15 W.

CIE-diagram of preset modes is very similar to each other. The slight shift is observed in all support points, which leads to a lack of pink and green colors, and supersaturation in light green and yellow-orange areas. After reading this text you'd think the results are pretty mediocre. However, this view is mistaken as the most important is not the fact of discrepancy with the standard reference points, but the value of their displacement. As can be seen from the diagrams, it is minimal. For profiles "Off", "Standard", "Game" and "Movie" in numeric terms it is expressed as 93.8% - 94.5% of color gamut in space sRGB. Modes "Landscape" and "Text" provide even greater coincidence of sRGB-triangles - 97.0% and 98.4%, respectively. So you can see that such results are excellent. If you are working with professional programs for processing graphics, video or doing layout of publications, the model iiyama ProLite XB2483HSU is quite suitable.

Equally impressive results were obtained by measuring the color accuracy and in all modes. The presence of only green color in the graphs is visible: the average deviation dE*94 (ΔE) is 0.63 - 0.85, which is significantly less than the permissible level of 1.5. As for the maximum deviation dE*94 (ΔE), here everything is good. In this case, the allowable value is 4, whereas the maximum recorded was 2.16. This color accuracy is not noticed by more expensive solutions that claim to be "professional".

If we talk about the best profiles, they are "Landscape" and "Text". Although the difference between them and other modes can be only caught by a special device.

Balance of RGB levels in the preset profiles can be called close to ideal. The result is very good against the competitive monitors: on a scale of brightness in the range of 20% - 100% all three components fall in the range of ± 5% from the reference line (100%). In the end there is not shift in cold or warm shades.

During the activation of the majority of profiles ("Off", "Standard", "Game", "Movie" and "Landscape") we have overestimated the average value of the range (2.45 - 2.52) and shift all three gamma curves downward relative to the reference black line. Thus, the picture on the screen will look slightly darker than the original. In case of such a high contrast it may lead to the loss of detail in dark objects. By the way, for this reason some movie lovers do not strongly favor solutions based on the s matrix type VA. Although gamers have quite the opposite opinion: rich and bright picture looks better in dynamic scenes. As you can see, very much depends on a matter of personal preference. But no one can deny that a contrast image on the screen looks more effectively and naturally.

The closest to the nominal value of 2.2 was the mode "Text". On its schedule gamma curves almost perfectly put on the reference line.
