PHILIPS Brilliance 272C4 monitor review and performance testing

As we have already wrote in one of our previous review nowadays the most popular monitors are Full HD devices. However, the rapid development of graphics cards and software had provided the benefits of higher resolutions to the users. The most important the ability to display more objects on the screen. Curiously enough, but first of all this fact was highly evaluated by people who have to deal with CAD-applications and other professional packages to handle graphics, video, sound, etc. The fact of the matter is that all modern such software products have highly developed interface with lots of palettes, panels, menus, shortcuts and cascading windows. And to take the advantage of all the  ideas very often Full HD monitor capacity is not enough.

In this case device with a big diagonal and resolution come to the rescue. Typically, these are 27-inch solutions with standard WQHD (2560 x 1440). They are not expensive such as 4K monitors, but their abilities are significantly higher than analogues of Full HD type.

And today’s review is devoted to such solution namely PHILIPS Brilliance 272C4. PHILIPS brand doesn’t need special introduction. The market is full of high-quality household appliances under this brand. As you can see computer monitors also are within the scope of PHILIPS interests.

Design and usage properties

PHILIPS Brilliance 272C4

Into design of PHILIPS Brilliance 272C4 model developers have applied strict forms staking on the reliability and practicality of the design. Monitor is painted in matt black color and only the surface of the stand has a glossy shine. The frame around the 27-inch screen is made quite thick that visually increases big size of the device. Screen format is traditional 16:9.

PHILIPS Brilliance 272C4

PHILIPS Brilliance 272C4 monitor is equipped with holes (initially covered by rubber plugs) fror VESA 100 mm mount so it is not difficult to fix it on the wall.

PHILIPS Brilliance 272C4

The stand is metallic and covered by plastic. It design is quite simple but at the same time it provides good firmness on the desktop.

PHILIPS Brilliance 272C4

Unfortunately it is not very functional: you can change the slope angles (from -5° to +20°). Height adjustment is not provided.

PHILIPS Brilliance 272C4

In spite of “modest” design this monitor is pretty producible and functional device. First of all it refers to multimedia capabilities. PHILIPS Brilliance 272C4 model is equipped by two speakers with total capacity 4W, built-in microphone and 2Mpixel video camera. Therefore together with monitor you obtain a complete set for video calls or videoconferences.

PHILIPS Brilliance 272C4

At the bottom of display you can watch two sensors that detect the presence of user in front of PC. When you leave the working place, the monitor automatically reduces screen brightness on 80%.

PHILIPS Brilliance 272C4

Traditional controls are replaced by touch-sensitive buttons. Next to “Power” button there is a small LED of white color that indicated about device operation mode.

PHILIPS Brilliance 272C4

Almost all interfaces and sockets are placed on backboard. To the right from the stand there are: audio input, HDMI, DL DVI-D and DisplayPort. To the left is main socket.

PHILIPS Brilliance 272C4

Headphones audio output is arranged in bottom end of the monitor that is not very convenient. But on the other hand headphones cable won’t damage the appearance of the monitor. Also on the back panel you can see USB port. It is used for transfer of data between PC and built-in microphone and video camera.

Display menu

PHILIPS Brilliance 272C4

Display menu has good structuring: all parameters are centered on several inserts with intuitive name.

The main settings are in tab “Image”. Here the user can manually adjust brightness, contrast, gamma or activate automatic functions that improve the image.

PHILIPS Brilliance 272C4

The choice of preinstalled profiles and sound source is on the quick keys.

PHILIPS Brilliance 272C4

Quite interesting is PHILIPS MultiView technology. Using it you can simultaneously display the images from two sources which in some cases will be very useful during working procedure.

Testing

During testing we have turned off the function responsible for automatic adjustment of brightness and contrast.

Profile basic parameters

There are seven profiles: “Text”, “Control”, “Photo”, “Movie”, “Game”, “Economy” and “Off”. Tested characteristics are given in the following table:

According to published data nominal brightness is 300 cd/m2. “Photo” and “Off” profiles were close to this value. The minimal index (almost 90 cd/m2) was observed during activation of “Economy” mode. It should be used at long time spending in front of computer to reduce eye load. As a whole brightness range is quite wide it means that PHILIPS Brilliance 272C4 monitor can be used at any type of lighting.

Static contrast ratio is on high level. It doesn’t match to specified value of 1000:1 but at index 800:1 you’ll get saturated bright colors. And the picture will have rich and “alive” hues.

Power consumption of monitor is changeable depending on the brightness. The maximum value during testing was 44W and the minimal 23W. Taking into account the dimensions of the monitor these values are quite acceptable.

All modes have approximately the same percent of sRGB color space that varies within 94-95%. This is a pretty good value. But the view of cover triangles should be better. In six cases (from seven) the tops were shifted from reference points. As a result the lack of color gamut will be on dark blue, blue, pink and red hues and the supersaturation on light-green, yellow and orange. The best mode was “Off” which has a less problems with red top of cover triangle.
