Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB monitor: review and testing

As with all major manufacturers of monitors, the company Philips has in its arsenal solutions with wide screen, with support of both formats 4K Ultra HD, as well as Full HD. A special place among take the so-called cinematic models with non-standard aspect ratio of the display (21:9 instead of 16:9 or 16:10). For some time past they are a bit cheaper, so more and more users become interested in them. In fact, besides entertainment purposes, such monitors are ideal for work due to a wide screen space.

To date, in the segment of cinematic solutions Philips is presented in two models: Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB and Philips Brilliance 298P4QJEB. Their cost is approximately the same, but they are slightly different due to functionality. In this review, we examine in details the capabilities of monitor Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB and we hope that in the near future we will get to the testing the second model.

Design and operation properties

Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB

Like all other solutions of cinematic format, Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB first attractes the attention due to the large size of the display (29"or 73 cm) and non-standard aspect ratio of (21:9). Due to such parameters it is perfect for entertainment purposes and will allow to dive into all actions on the screen, whether it is movies or games.

Much attention is paid to the design of the monitor. Thin frame around the screen and stylized aluminum base plate perfectly match with the glossy leg. All elements are designed in black that underline the elegant appearance of the model Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB.

Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB

Despite the fact that the power supply has an internal location, the monitor case is pretty thin – just 59 mm. The rear panel has holes for standard mount VESA 100 mm. Therefore, in case of need Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB can be placed on the wall. The weight of the monitor is only 5.7 kg.

Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB

Stand is represented as a metal frame, closed at the top with plastic panels. This design makes the monitor quite stable and at the same time does not spoil its appearance. Leg can not be called a very functional, since the user can adjust only the angle of the display within -5°...+20°. With this size of the screen we would like to have the possibility of changing its position and height. But, as with most 29-inch solutions, the manufacturer also made a bid for reliable design, sacrificing by the part of its capabilities. Build quality of model Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB is at the highest level: the panels are processed good and are close to each other.

Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB

Video connectors are presented by digital interfaces DVI-I Dual Link, DisplayPort In and two HDMI. In all cases, there is a support to output images with a resolution of 2560 х 1080 at refresh rate 60 Hz. Also note the presence of interface DisplayPort Out.

Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB

It will be useful in case of the need to organize multiscreen configuration of several monitors, especially if the graphics card in the PC does not support this capability.

Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB

Multimedia functionality of Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB is expanded to the headphone output and built-in speakers of the total output of 4 W. Audio transmission can be realized via a digital video connector on the PC sound card. Selection of the sound source is carried out in the OSD.

The sound quality of built-in speakers is acceptable, although the low frequencies are still lacking. In any case, their capacity is sufficient not only for audio playback of videos on the Internet, the implementation of video calls or video conferencing, but also for listening to music in the workplace.

The display is controlled by five control keys made on the end of the monitor. Most of them have a dual function: to navigate in menus and quick access to the main parameters of the monitor and proprietary technologies.

Display menu and operational demonstration of proprietary technologies

The OSD menu has fairly simple structure: the left side has the tab sand the right displays their contents. Get it very easily, even if you do not have any experience with monitors Philips. In addition, there is support for Russian language.

The main parameters that influence the display of images on the screen are grouped in sections "Image" and "Color". Traditionally you are invited to ask the brightness, contrast and gamma, as well as to put the balance of primary colors (R, G, B). Here are the items that are responsible for the activation of certain proprietary options. The most interesting and required are two: Philips SmartTxt and Philips MultiView. The first is intended to increase the sharpness of the picture on the screen, while the second provides the capability to display images simultaneously from two sources.

These photographs show the operatin of technology Philips MultiView in different display modes: «Picture-by-Picture» or «PbP» and «Picture-in-Picture» or «PiP». With such a large working area of the screen it will find a use in practice and facilitate the simultaneous operation of multiple applications.

Access to the pre-defined profiles is carried out not from the menu but by pressing the button «SmartImage» on the monitor.

During testing of model Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB the hardware platform was mini-computer ZOTAC ZBOX nano ID65 PLUS. Full description of the methodology of research of the monitor you can read the relevant material.

Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB

Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB has seven modes: "Text", "Control", "Photo", "Cinema", "Game", "Economy" and "Off". First of all let’s look at the performance profiles obtained during the test, and then analyze the results on the basis of the graphs in more detail.

White area brightness, cd/m2

Black area brightness, cd/m2

Contrast coefficient, х:1

Color temperature of white dot, К

Correspondence of color space with sRGB standard, %

Correspondence of color space with AdobeRGB standard, %

Average deviation dE*94 (E)

Maximum deviation dE*94 (E)

Average gamma

Power consumption, W

Maximum fixed brightness level (270 cd/m2) was close to fixed level of 300 cd/m2. But this result is also high. Fans of bright pictures will be satisfied. For a conventional type of lighting we recommend to reduce this option the level of 150-200 cd/m2. If you spend a lot of time on the computer, it is advisable to use an even smaller value or profile "Economy". It is not a perfect profile for reading, but it will allow slightly reduce eye strain.

Good static contrast ratio which ranges 990:1 - 1100: 1 and in some cases even reaches 1195:1. Thus, regardless of the profile of the screen you'll always observe saturated colors and shades.

Model Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB has a fairly low power consumption 39 W. Approximately the same figures showed the rest of the solution with a diagonal of 29" tasted in our lab.
Now let's examine the color rendering.

CIE-diagram of profile “Off”

CIE-diagram of other profiles

Model Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB has a fairly large gamut space sRGB (max 95.8%) as for non-professional monitors. However, this situation occurs only when you use the profile "Off". The other profiles do not have the same good results, and the CIE-diagram is poor: there is a serious flaw in the red and pink shades.

A similar pattern was recorded during the measurement of color accuracy. In the mode "Off" monitor Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB demonstrates excellent results: the average and maximum deviation dE*94 (ΔE) is 0.54 and 2.07, which is below the allowable grades 1,5 and 4 respectively. But when using other profiles the deviation of certain groups of shades are beyond the standard dE*94.

Graph of RGB  level of other profiles

In general all modes have a good balance of primary colors in all areas of the scene: there is no shift in cold or warm shades. Except the profile "Cinema" where the blue component was slightly overstated. Although it is standard practice for this type of mode, such as the setting provide more natural skin color transfer.

Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB

Graph of gamma-curves of all profiles

The same good results were recorded in the test which determines the accuracy of the gamma setting. As you can see from the graph, the gamma curves are almost perfectly put on the reference line of black. Only in one place there is an insignificant sagging of blue component. And this situation appears in all modes. As a result, the monitor will provide even the smallest details of image objects, regardless of their degree of brightness in the scene. The picture will look exactly as originally planned, that is not dull and not dark.
