South Park: The Stick of Truth game review
Name: South Park: The Stick of Truth
Genre: Adventure / RPG
Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
Editor: Ubisoft Entertainment
Release date : 6 March 2014
Animated series "South Park" has been existed almost 17 years and today continues to be one of the most popular situation comedy in the world. It's amazing that fans had to wait good game based on the cartoon until 2014.
The first we should say: if you are not familiar with the original or you do not like the special often senseless and sometime absurd humor of the serial, the best way is to ignore the game. If in your opinion the creation of Matt Stone and Trey Parker is brilliantly and has no analogues in the world, welcome to the game. Tiny fictional town South Park in Colorado is waiting for you with all their crazy inhabitants whose names you already know by heart.
The only new face in town is the main character who throughout the game does not say a word. Kids call him “The New Kid”. He moved to South Park in time: here is a war between people headed by Eric, and elves led by Kyle. The parties are fighting for an incredibly powerful artifact Stick of Truth, since, according to legend invented by children "who owns a Stick - owns the world".
Gradually the degree of madness begins to grow, and harmless battle between the children after which the losing party imitates the dead bodies turns to stories about alien kidnapping, the virus that turns all living things (even microbes) in zombie-fascists, etc.
Since South Park: The Stick of Truth was created under the guidance of cartoon authors here is everything from dozens of characters with authentic voices, communication and behavior manner to graphics that makes the game indistinguishable from the original animation source. Moreover, the town got the map: you can walk over South Park, enjoy pleasant music, and look to the familiar locations and search every corner for secret places. And for quick movement through the game world you can use flags provided by Timmy.
Every phrase, every action, every plot is soaked with the mockery and satire which 100% transfers the spirit of the cartoon. From eating crisps to restore health and to cut episodes with anal sensing are the traditions of grim humor and absurd comedy which perfectly settled down in this game.
Each character involved in the game play has a bright personality. Jimmy sings vulgar songs, Al Gore is looking for fiction hero, Mr. Hankey bathes the enemies in the sea of faeces, and the team of Goths thinks about perishable of all things and hates conformists.
In general, the more parts of the cartoon you have watched, the more unexpected references to them you will discover in the game. For example, in some areas there is the song Taco-flavored Kisses from a series about drawn Jennifer Lopez on Cartman's hand. And in one of the lockers in Stan house you will fing “Sword of Thousand Truths” from the legendary episode «Make Love, Not Warcraft». And the price of these weapons is $ 1.80.
South Park: The Stick of Truth could be made as a simple interactive cartoon that will have a success in any event. But the developers have deepened the gameplay so you will not try all plot turns and opportunities for single pass.
The game includes the following characters: 4 classes of fighters with 5 special activities for each; 6 partners with their own abilities; dozens of weapon, equipment and improvements to them, the possibility of free changing at any time; great number of enemies, each has few options for the attack. In case if you want to examine the characteristics of all subjects, the lion's share of game time can be taken the selection of accoutrements. Also you can add a ton of assorted trash with sarcastic descriptions and destination - for sale. So you should think whether to run the game for the evening and following the storyline and deprive a good portion of humor?
The battles in the game are step by step but with some nuance. You should not only press the button choosing to the most acceptable solution, but also to manage a fighter during hitting. Here comes QTE system but in South Park it looks quite organically, besides it greatly revitalizes the game process.
Formally the creation Obsidian Entertainment is ranked as role-playing game but we consider this game as adventure. Yes, you will find a set of experiences, development of skills, but all this is given in a very much simplified form. In fact the hero develops itself, and the player's task is to gain the experience and occasionally improve only one ability. However, the expanded role system is not required.
Perhaps the only disadvantage of “Stick of Truth” is inconvenient control and small gamepad. It is better to use a gamepad, since otherwise almost half of the keyboard + two buttons of the mouse will be activated. Also, the does not have the option to sort the objects: they are placed chaotic.
Regarding the duration, we would like to note that it will be better if the game will be several times longer, and the actions more extensive. The storyline is rather short; secondary quests are not enough and the whole city can be run round in 10-15 minutes.
However, from the first frame to the final titles South Park: The Stick of Truth manages constantly to add new jokes, new plot turns and new gameplay surprises. This game cannot be viewed through the prism of genre. In most cases it is absurd like the cartoon, this provides its attractiveness.
