The attempt to describe The Crew in one sentence would sound something like this: it's a multiplayer Need for Speed c open world like Test Drive Unlimited. After a short introduction, talking about personal tragedy in the life of the protagonist, the player goes to the vast expanses of virtual America. This, perhaps, is the main charm of the game.
The plot is unpretentious and more like a collection of stamps at once from all films about the race that you can remember. Here is a revenge for the murdered brother, and the introduction into the community of street racers, which is a cover for organized crime, and the FBI recruiters and sales agents, collection of team, hijacking expensive cars and so on. As a result, you are a little disappointed when on the horizon you won’t see Dominic Toretto in Dodge Charger R/T or at least Randall Raines with his legendary Eleanor.
However, the basic rate in The Crew was made not to the plot, but the free exploration of the game world and multiplayer races. This is evident even from the fact that the game is absolutely not importunated. Do you have a desire to progress through the story and look for the brother’s killer? The taskst are carefully highlighted on the map. Do you want to pass a single test and earn items to improve the performance of your car? No question, they are found at every corner. Tired of Detroit and have a desire to bask in the bright California sun or visit the Sequoia National Park? There are no restrictions.
There are a lot of thing to admire in The Crew. In terms of graphic the game cannot compete with last year's Need for Speed: Rivals, but the thoroughness with which the developers have recreated the United States is striking. Sometimes it seems that when the developers created a game world in the Ivory Tower they used data from Google Street View, which, of course, nothing more than an illusion.
But even without this the scale and matching the original source is impressive: the game world with an area of 5000 km2 and a total length of roads in ten thousand kilometers. Here New York in terms of size is comparable to Liberty City in GTA 4, but it's just one of the cities in one of the five regions of America.
At first glance, the gameplay in The Crew is not much different from what we have seen in other arcade racing simulators: select the first wheels and forth on the track. For winning the race you will get cash and new parts for tuning. Cars are divided into classes: for racing in the city is better suited street car; for cross-country you should take crossover; during long races on the highway choose supercars and racing cars; and for rally select bolide.
And here the first surprise - the player is not forced to buy a separate car for each type of competition, because virtually any car can install at least two thematic kits. So, your Skyline for a couple of seconds can turn from street car into crossover. Moreover, this configuration does not replace the original model. You just get extra cars that can be individually tuned.
After completion of the twenty-hour campaign everything starts. By this time you can perform a little bit of single acceleration tests to maximum speed, compliance with the ideal trajectory, drift, and so on and take part in a couple of competitions groups (five of them, one for each region of the country). In these competitions, the most exciting races in the game take from one to four hours to complete. Do not forget about the usual multiplayer: in your team you can invite up to three players and held together as a story, as well as any other race.
Sounds like the perfect racing arcade, isn’t it? Unfortunately, the game has substantial disadvantages. If impossible to play without internet connection can be forgiven (after all, the game has a lot of MMO elements), then the strange physics is not acceptable. As is usually for Ubisoft games, it takes time to get used for the behavior of the car and you should avoid the clashes. Bolide can ignore strong shock into bump stop, but fly after barely catching some bumps.
The behavior of opponents also is not perfect: they can slow down if you are far away, or vice versa, at supersonic speed to escape over the horizon. As a result, there is a lot of unnecessary associations with the old Need for Speed Underground. And not with the best hand. We especially want to mention annoying aspect when during the most crucial moment of the race before you appears minivan. Guys, this trick is 11 years, think of something else. And the police are not impressive: the pursuit is for the mark, and penalties are small.
Also you can certainly find fault with even a couple of small things, but it does not change the main thing - The Crew is not perfect. But at the same time there is no something better for this year. So warm up the engine, America is waiting!
