Motherboard ASUS X99-DELUXE: review and testing

In this article we will focus on the flagship model of the motherboard - ASUS X99-DELUXE, which has just the same excellent capabilities, but also the associated cost. Of course, speaking about the top models, the question of their value is not decisive, since for these devices manufacturer tries to demonstrate their capabilities to the maximum, both in design and as a component in a set of additional features. In this case the novelty has expanded scope of delivery, an impressive set of ports for the organization of the disk subsystem, a quality sound subsystem and an integrated dual band wireless interface module Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.0. Let us consider other capabilities allow us to fully called ASUS X99-DELUXE as flagship device.

Packaging and content


Packing of motherboard ASUS X99-DELUXE is made in the form of a rather large cardboard box. On the front side you will notice the large image of the device, as well as the logos of the manufacturer and proprietary technology Dual Intelligent Processors 5 with 5-Way Optimization. Additionally is designated a support of technologies AMD CrossFireX and NVIDIA SLI, as well as audio technologies DTS Connect and DTS UltraPC II.


By tradition the box reverse side has the description of the key features:

  • Dual Intelligent Processors 5 with 5-Way Optimization - motherboard is equipped with two smart chips: energy processor (Energy Processing Unit - EPU) and TurboV-processor (TurboV Processing Unit - TPU). The fifth generation of the chips work with a digital power system DIGI+ VRM and technologies Fan Xpert 3 and TurboAPP, that lets you fine-optimization of the system depending on the current needs of the user.  
  • TurboLAN - using the bundled software you can monitor the network activity of your PC in real time, as well as set each program the priority access to network resources.
  • TurboAPP - allows you to select the required level of performance for each individual application. Firmware ASUS AI Suite 3 allows you to customize not only performance, but also to choose your audio profile of each application, as well as configure the prioritization of network traffic.
  • Crystal Sound 2 - pre-installed audio codec Realtek ALC1150, which uses a special amplifier TI R4580I, offers the support of eight-channel sound. In order to avoid interference caused by electromagnetic interference, a special screening technology Audio Shielding is applied. To ensure maximum audio quality there are Japanese audio capacitors of company Nichicon. In addition, the left and right audio channels are formed on different layers of the PCB that accompanies minimize crosstalk. Also here is the support of the technologies DTS CONNECT Users and DTS Ultra PC II, as well as the presence of the port S/PDIF out on the interface panel.
  • USB BIOS Flashback – provides the updating of firmware BIOS from the flash drive by a simple pressing of the appropriate button on the interface panel.
  • USB 3.0 Boost – to increase the rat eof USB 3.0 operation there is a support of protocol UASP.
  • AI Suite 3 – the set of delivery includes proprietary software which provides a fine tuning of system parameters in BIOS.
  • Wi-Fi Go! – integrated dual band wireless module Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.0 can reach the speed up to 1300 Mb/s. This will allow you to connect to wireless networks and use the PC as an access point for other multimedia devices. Additionally here is a support of the PC control using a smart phone, transfer files between PC and portable devices, synchronization of information between the various cloud storage, as well as the function Media Streamer (play multimedia files over the wireless network.) In this case the support of two frequency bands (2.4 and 5 GHz) allows you to use the first for web browsing, and the second - to download HD-quality video.


The reverse side has an image of the product, as well as its brief specifications. Also here is a detailed description of the key features and advantages of the device:

  • O.C. Socket - a proprietary feature of ASUS motherboards on chipset Intel X99. In contrast to the standard CPU socket Socket LGA2011-v3, ASUS OC Socket has a large number of contact legs. As we know, on the new processors Intel Haswell-E have more contact pad than the legs in the slot. ASUS has finalized the CPU socket for them. In combination with a proprietary UEFI BIOS it can provide more stable voltage on the CPU and memory under heavy load during acceleration and achieve better results.
  • Fan Extension Hub is a complete module, allowing you to connect four fans and three thermal sensors, will be particularly useful for the organization of a powerful cooling within the case.
  • HYPER M.2 x4 - expansion card with interface PCI Express, which is equipped with a connector M.2 x4 PCIe 3.0 (carrying capacity up to 32 Gb / s), supports drives formats M.2 2230, 2242, M.2 2260, M .2 2280 and 22110 M.2.




The box with the ASUS X99-DELUXE, we found a very nice set of accessories:

Design and features of the board


New product is made on black PCB of size ATX (305 x 244 mm) and compares favorably with pleasantly decorated bright colors, as well as protective cover.


An additional design element is a strip with LED-backlit of yellow color, which will appeal to owners of buildings with a transparent lid and modding fans.

Speaking about the layout and ease of system building it is worth mentioning a fairly dense arrangement of all functional units, but we did not have any claims, as the location of all the elements is quite thoughtful and convenient.



The reverse side of the PCB has a standard base plate of the socket, and the radiators secured by screws. Do note a small low profile heatsink, located directly under the elements of the subsystem processor power for more efficient cooling and a number of chips too large to fit on the front side of the board.


At the bottom of the board there are the following connectors: front panel audio leading-in socket, S/PDIF out, TPM port, module TB_HEADER (to realize interface Thunderbolt), CMOS reset, power and reboot buttons, diagnostic LED-indicator, one 4-pin socket for connection of case fan, as well as front panel leading-in socket.

Also here are four leading-in sockets for USB activation: two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0. Total number of USB 2.0 sockets is six: four internal and two on the interface panel. As for USB 3.0 their number is fourteen: four and internal and ten are external. All internal and one external ports are implemented by the chipset, while ten additional connectors on the interface panel work thanks to three controllers: one ASMedia ASM1042AE and two ASMedia ASM1074.


Special attention is given to three small switches: «EZ_XMP», «TPU» and «EPU». The first has three positions and intended to switch of modes of technologies NVIDIA SLI and AMD CrossFireX. The second is designed to activate the corresponding XMP-profile of RAM. The third has three positions: "Off", "1" (automatic overclocking system by increasing the multiplier) and "2" (automatic overclocking by increasing the FSB frequency and CPU multiplier). The last tumbler has only two positions and is responsible for the activation of the power saving function (EPU).




The capability of disk subsystem organization is performed by  socket M.2 х4 PCIe 3.0 with vertical orientation and maximum carrying capacity 32 Gb/s (SSD-drives of format M.2 2242, 2260, 2280 и 22110 are supported), eight ports SATA 6 Gb/s, as well as two SATA Express which are compatible with two SATA 6 Gb/s. Here is the support of SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10. Since chipset Intel H99 does not ensure the operation of all of the above interfaces, for the functioning of a single port SATA Express was used controller ASMedia ASM106SE.


Also do not forget about the complete board HYPER M.2 x4, into which you can install another SSD-drive (supported of formats M.2 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110), with the possibility of carrying up to 32 Gb/s.

Due to the lack of free chipset lines, as well as the presence of a large number of controllers on the motherboard, there is a number of restrictions on the simultaneous use of ports and connectors:  

  • one slot PCI Express 3.0 x16 (Scheme «PCIE_X16_5») shares the bandwidth with interface M.2 x4 PCIe 3.0. If you connect the drive and three video cards they will work at scheme x8 + x8 + x8. If there is no need of the interface M.2 x4 PCIe 3.0 you will get a faster circuit х16+х16+х8. Note that this restriction only applies to CPUs with 40 lines PCI Express. In the case of the processor Intel Core I7 5820K, which supports only 28 lines PCI Express 3.0, the slot «PCIE_X16_5» will always use only one line of PCI Express, respectively, in the installation of the drive interface M.2 x4 PCIe 3.0 will not affect the circuit operation of video cards to be connected to other slots.  
  • Connector PCI Express 2.0 x4 (scheme «PCIE_X4_1») shares bandwidth with two USB 3.0 ports on the interface panel (scheme «USB3_E12») and one of the two SATA Express (scheme «SATAExpress_E1»). If the slot PCI Express 2.0 x4 has expansion card, the interface SATA Express is unavailable.



ASUS X99-A is equipped with eight DIMM-slots for memory modules of standard DDR4, which for convenience are equipped with latches on one side only. RAM can handle a maximum of four-channel mode. To implement one of the multi-channel mode, the module must be installed according one of the following schemes.


Modules operating at frequencies of 2133 MHz in the nominal mode and up to 3200 MHz overclocking are supported. The maximum amount of memory can be up to 64 GB, which is enough for any tasks.

Additionally we note button «MemOK!» on the right side of the PCB which allows you to automatically pick up the necessary parameters of the memory for the successful launch of the system.




Cooling system of the product consists of four aluminum radiators divided by pairs. Each pair is connected by heat pipe. The first provides heat removal out of Intel X99 and is connected with additional radiator in the center which has no the thermal interface on the reverse side. THE second pair operated according the same scheme: one radiator is placed in the upper part and covers field transistors and removes heat to additional element outside the interface panel. In the process of testing the following temperature indices were fixed:

  • radiator for chipset cooling – 36.2°C;
  • top radiator for cooling the elements of power subsystem – 47.4°C;
  • bottom radiator for cooling the elements of power subsystem – 41.3°C;

The results can be described as good, which gives hope for higher overclocking potential.



Processor power supply is performed via 8-phase scheme for computational cores and additional joints. Converter is based on a digital PWM controller ASP1257. All power components of CPU have high reliability level: solid capacitors and chokes with ferrite core are used. Basic 24-pin and additional 8-pin connectors are use for power feeding.


To extend motherboard functionality the user has six slots:

  1. PCI Express 3.0 x16 («PCIE_X16_1», mode х16 or х8);
  2. PCI Express 2.0 x4 («PCIE_X4_1»);
  3. PCI Express 3.0 x16 («PCIE_X16_2», mode х8);
  4. PCI Express 3.0 / 2.0 x16 («PCIE_X16_3», mode х16, х8 or х1);
  5. PCI Express 3.0 x16 («PCIE_X16_4», mode х8);
  6. PCI Express 3.0 / 2.0 x16 («PCIE_X16_5», mode х8 or х1).

In this case we are dealing with a very interesting realization of these slots operation, which depends on the model of the installed processor.

In the case of modifications, by supporting 40 lines PCIe, all five full-length PCI Express slots used line standard PCI Express 3.0. Depending on the number of installed graphics they would operate one of the following schemes.


As you can see, there are two options: x8 + x8 + x8 or faster x16 + x16 + x8. Recall that the choice of mode depends on the availability of the drive interface M.2 x4 PCIe 3.0. If it is set, the will be the first, otherwise - the second.

Also note that in theory you have the ability to install four or five lines of video cards with distribution schemes x16 + x8 + x8 + x8 + x8 and x8 + x8 + x8 + x8. However, if desired to realize this potential, you will come across the width limitation of video accelerators, some of which must be equipped with one slot cooler.

In the case with the processor Intel Core I7 5820K, which supports only 28 lines PCI Express 3.0, two slots (Scheme «PCIE_X16_3» and «PCIE_X16_5») will use one of the standard lines chipset PCI Express 2.0, while the other three are designed for graphics cards.


In turn, slot PCI Express 2.0 x4 can be used for other expansion cards.


Multi I/O capabilities are based on NUVOTON NCT6791D chip which controls the operation of the system fans, as well as provides the monitors.



The operation of ten USB 3.0 ports on the interface panel is implemented using the chip ASMedia ASM1042AE and two controllers ASMedia ASM1074.


The operation of the additional port SATA Express is provided by controller ASMedia ASM106SE.



To support network connections there are two GB LAN-controllers: Intel WGI218V and Intel WGI211AT. Network resource allocation and traffic prioritization can perform the utility TurboLAN.


Sound subsystem is based on HAD codec of 8-channel sound Realtek ALC1150 that supports 2/4/5.1/7.1 sound systems and has several proprietary features (concept Crystal Sound 2). It presupposes the existence of special audio capacitor amplifier TI R4580I and Japanese audio capacitors to improve the quality of the reproduced sound. The area of the PCB with the sound path is shielded by a protective strip. Moreover, the left and right audio channels are on separate layers of the PCB.



Interface panel of model contains the following ports: 

  • 2 x LAN (RJ45);
  • 10 x USB 3.0;
  • 2 x USB 2.0;
  • 1 x button «USB BIOS Flashback»;
  • 3 x sockets for combined antenna Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • 1 x Optical S/PDIF out;
  • 5 x audio ports.

Besides the main advantages in a form of a complete module with support for Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac + Bluetooth 4.0, an interface panel has the presence of twelve USB ports and a convenient connecting of multichannel speakers. Also note the button to update the BIOS firmware from the flash drive.




The capabilities of organizing the cooling system inside the body at ASUS X99-A are very nice. There are six 4-pin fan connectors, two of which are used for the cooling system of CPU, while the other four are designed for system fans.
