Gaming motherboard GIGABYTE G1.SNIPER B5 review and testing

Actually motherboard of GIGABYTE G1-Killer line was in our lab during long period. This line includes not only high-price models but also more affordable solutions designed to assembling a system with a single video card. Exactly this modification will be described in this review.

 GIGABYTE G1.SNIPER B5 

Motherboard GIGABYTE G1.SNIPER B5 based on chipset Intel B85 Express has a very etching cost about U.S. $ 110 and an attractive design. Among the key parameters the first mention is the support for technology package Intel Small Business Advantage implemented through a set of system logic. Also a new product should be commended for excellent facilities, which includes a complete set of all necessary ports and connectors, and improved sound system which has some interesting features.

The product is supplied in a cardboard box of standard dimensions. It has high quality dark color design. Front side contains brand name, device type, GIGABYTE G1-Killer logo as well as Intel Small Business Advantage support.

The most interesting and useful information about this product is given on reverse side of the box. Here you can find image of motherboard, its interface panel and brief technical specification. Also there is a small description of the key advantages, namely its compliance with Ultra Durable 4 Plus which includes the following features:

  • Ultra Cool a new sample of high efficiency cooler is used for cooling.
  • Ultra Performance - element base includes high quality components such as solid-state capacitors and Field Effect Transistor with low channel resistance (Low RDS(on)). They have higher level of efficiency, stability and reliability.
  • Ultra Safe - this model is equipped with two chips with BIOS firmware download (main and additional) that will allow you to avoid a visit to the service center in case of main chip damage. Also there is an additional protection of USB and LAN connectors against electrostatic discharge. Each LAN and USB connector is operated with a special protective filter that can withstand severe electrostatic discharge. It protects the system against power instability even during a thunderstorm.          

Also here is a number of audio subsystem features:

  • Nichicon High End Audio Capacitors - special premium audio capacitors produced by Nichicon are used as part of the audio subsystem.
  • GIGABYTE AMP-UP Audio - preinstalled operational audio amplifier OPA2134PA can be easily replaced by other which will meet the musical tastes of the user.
  • Gold Plated Audio Jacks - motherboard has high quality gold-plated audio sockets resistant to signal interference.
  • Audio Noise Guard - PCB area that contains soldered sound system, shielded with a special metal strip with LED-backlighting of green color.

Design and features of this board

Model under testing is performed on dark-brown ATX printed circuit board (305x225 mm) and has the same design like for other devices of GIGABYTE G1-Killer. Dark PCB is perfectly combined with slots of bright green color. At the same time all the essential elements are located on the optimal positions; respectively you will not have the problem with assembling. The only detail that we want to mention is a shift of mounting holes closer to the center on the right side of the PCB. Taking into account the perpendicular arrangement of the SATA ports and the main power connector, this will require you some care during connection because the excessive force may cause the damage in these areas.

The reverse side of the circuit board attracts your attention by standard plate of CPU connector (FOXCONN producer) as well as fastening screws of cooling system.

We want to draw your attention to the thin strip of LED-backlighting used for screening of PCB area with audio subsystem.

At the bottom of the PCB there are the following ports and connectors: block for audio slot connection on the front panel, S/PDIF Out and S/PDIF In, COM and LPT sockets, device for CMOS, and block for the front panel connectors (color detection to simplify connection process). Additionally, there are two block to activate USB 2.0 ports. Total number of interface support is eight: four internal and four on the interface panel.

Disk subsystem organization is presented by six SATA ports placed perpendicular to the board surface. Two of them (black) support the specification of SATA 3Gb/s, and the other four (white) correspond to the standard SATA 6 GB/s. The operation of all six interfaces is realized by the chipset. GIGABYTE G1.SNIPER B5 is equipped with four DIMM-slots for installation of standard DDR3memory modules which are equipped with latches on both sides. RAM can operate in dual channel mode. For its realization the memory blocks should be installed either in the first and third or second and fourth slots. Modules operating at frequencies up to 1600 MHz in the nominal mode are supported. The maximum capacity can reach 32 GB. This should be enough for almost all tasks.

Also draw your attention to the 19-pin USB 3.0, which is used to activate the two external interfaces USB 3.0. Total number of USB 3.0 ports is four: two internal and two on the interface panel.

Cooling system of GIGABYTE G1.SNIPER B5 consists of two aluminum radiators: the first covers the elements of processor power subsystem, while the second is responsible for cooling the chipset. In the process of testing the following temperature values were fixed:

• radiator for cooling the chipset - 29,4°C;

• radiator for cooling of processor elements power - 25,6°C;

• chokes of power system - 45,9°C.

As we can see the cooling system easily copes with its responsibilities and the results can be described as excellent.

Processor feeding is performed via 4-phase scheme for cores and additional joints. Converter is based on a digital PWM controller ISL9582. Electronic elements of motherboard collected using high-quality components in accordance with the original concept of Ultra Durable 4 Plus. It is composed of: solid capacitors and field-effect device with low resistance of open channel (Low RDS (on)). Basic 24-pin and additional 8-pin connectors are use for power feeding.

To extend GIGABYTE G1.SNIPER B5 motherboard functionality the user has 6 slots:

  1. PCI Express 3.0 x16 (mode х16);
  2. PCI Express 2.0 x1;

  5. PCI;
  6. PCI.

Despite the support of AMD CrossFireX technology, the motherboard is more suitable for the building of system with a one graphics card. The question is that the mode of distribution lines x16 + x4 (in case of two graphics cards) does not allow to realize their potential in full manner. As for the general impression of a set of expansion slots, we want to note the presence of separate connectors PCI that significantly expand the possibilities of installation a wide variety of boards.

As Intel B85 Express chipset does not support PCI bus, the functioning of the relevant slot is realized by a usage of PCIE-PCI bridge based on the controller ITE IT8892E.

It is based on the 8-channel codec Realtek ALC898 which operates in a pair with high quality capacitors manufactured by Nichicon, replaceable amplifier OPA2134PA, as well as a separate amplifier to support headphones with an impedance of 600 Ohms.

Interface panel GIGABYTE G1.SNIPER B5 offers very good opportunities for connecting the speaker system. Also you can lead COM and LPT ports to the back panel using the appropriate blocks on the PCB. In addition we would like to specify the support of HDMI video output with the output of images with resolution of 3840x2160 pixels (4K Ultra HD) and the presence of additional gilding on the audio and video outputs. As a result this configuration deserves our high mark.

Four sockets for fan connection are used to organize cooling of GIGABYTE G1.SNIPER B5 motherboard. One of them is used for the CPU cooling system, and the other three - to activate the system of fans. All sockets are in accordance with the modern requirements.

This model is equipped with a modern UEFI insertion based on microcode AMI with an opportunity of changing of graphical interface. Also there is availability to control by a mouse and support of storage device capacity 3 TB. It has two BIOS chips (DualBIOS technology) which will keep system operation in case of the main chip damage.

As you could notice, new item in the BIOS does not have separate section responsible for the monitoring of voltages and temperatures on the main components because all the required data is displayed directly on the screen. Here you can watch the CPU temperature, fan rotation frequency and monitor the voltage on the memory module, processor, and power lines +12V, +5V and +3.3V.
