GIGABYTE GA-F2A58M-HD2 motherboard: review and testing

In most cases when building inexpensive office or home computer the motherboard is not the component that requires a significant financial investment. For users who are not fond of extreme overcloking and do not use a lot of expansion cards, it is quite enough to use microATX models which has reliable components and basic functionality. The rest sum will allow to get a more powerful processor or a discrete graphics card.

The hero of this material is the motherboard GIGABYTE GA-F2A58M-HD2 which despite its low price, has many of the features of their older colleagues.

Packaging and content  


Packing of motherboard is made of black cardboard. Its front side contains the manufacturer's logo and the model name, and a list of features that are included in the concept of Ultra Durable 4 Plus:

  • Ultra Cool - aluminum radiator is used for cooling the chipset;
  • Ultra Performance - solid capacitors and field-effect transistors with reduced resistance of open channel, which are optimized for operation at elevated temperatures;
  • Ultra Safe - thanks to technology GIGABYTE DualBIOS, which involves the use of primary and backup chipset BIOS, it is possible to recover your computer in case of failure or failure of the main firmware chip.

Also here is a work scenario in which you can simultaneously connect up to three monitors. This is achieved thanks to the connectors D-Sub, DVI-D and HDMI on the interface panel of the motherboard.


The reverse side of the box has a more detailed description of the main components of which are arranged on the PCB, and the connectors of interface panel. All of this is duplicated by scheme with colorful icons. It is worth to note the following characteristics:

  • overvoltage protection is provided due to the special chip;  
  • PCB with a special scheme of laying fiber at the base, which increases the level of protection against humidity and short-circuit currents is used;
  • there is a system of protection USB and RJ45 connectors on the interface panel against electrostatic discharges;
  • HDMI port supports a resolution of 4K Ultra HD and can work effectively with the appropriate monitor or TV;
  • you can charge portable devices using the USB ports of the motherboard even when the computer is off thanks to the support of technology GIGABYTE ON/OFF Charge.


Package of GIGABYTE GA-F2A58M-HD2 consists of only the most necessary accessories, such as:

  • two SATA cables;
  • plug of the interface board;
  • CD with software and drivers;
  • user's guide. 

Design and features


The product is made on PCB of format microATX, which is painted in a dark brown color. Arrangement of all main connectors, ports, and holes for screws is quite well, so we did not have any difficulty in installing it in the body and the subsequent assembly of the computer.


On the reverse side of the PCB is the base plate, which strengthens the CPU socket and allows to set massive cooling system of CPU. Also here you can see two white clips that hold the aluminum heatsink on the chipset.


At the bottom of the board there are the following connectors: front panel audio leading-in socket, connector for case fan, COM port, two modules for interfaces USB 2.0, as well as front panel connection module. Total number of USB 2.0 sockets is eight: four are internal and four on the interface panel.



Disk subsystem runs under chip AMD A58. It is presented by a four SATA 3Gb/s ports. They support the operation in arrays RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 10, and JBOD. Also it should be noted that the two connectors are located on the right edge of the PCB, and two are located at the bottom of the PCB. This design makes it easier to connect the drives, as it would not create a large concentration of cables in one place. And even the setting of overall expansion cards will not prevent free access to them.


There are two DIMM-slots to mount the modules of DDR3 memory. They support dual channel mode and are equipped with latches on both sides.

Although the specified supports of RAM is up to 64 GB, but taking into account the absence of available modules larger than 8 GB, the actual maximum amount will be 16 GB. In general, this will be enough for most everyday tasks and multimedia.


Cooling system of the product includes one aluminum radiator installed on the chipset. But elements of the power system are not equipped with any additional cooling. In the process of testing the following temperature indices were fixed:

  • radiator for chipset cooling – 49.1°C;
  • choke temperature – 65.3°C.
  • temperature of field transistors 69.4°C.

As you can see, at the maximum load the power subsystem elements are heated strongly enough. However here are solid capacitors and field-effect transistors, which are designed to operate at elevated temperatures, so this fact should not affect the stability of the motherboard.



The power subsystem is performed according 5-phase scheme. It uses only high-quality components that are characterized by high reliability in operation. Chip Intersil ISL62773As is applied as controller. Basic 24-pin and additional 8-pin connectors are use for power feeding.


To extend the functionality of GIGABYTE GA-F2A58M-HD2 user has the following slots:

  • PCI Express 3.0 x16 (mode х16);
  • PCI Express 2.0 x1;
  • PCI.

If the performance of the built-in graphics core APU is not enough, it is possible to install additional discrete graphics card into the slot PCI Express 3.0 x16. In this case the standard PCI Express 3.0 will be used only if case of the installation the processor of family AMD Kaveri. If you use the solutions of series AMD Trinity or AMD Richland, this connector will support the standard PCI Express 2.0 x16.

You can also connect a sound card with the socket PCI Express 2.0 x1 or PCI. It is worth to note that the simultaneous installation of the graphics card and sound card in slots PCI Express 3.0 x16 and PCI Express 2.0 x1 in most cases will not be possible. This is due to the fact that virtually all graphics accelerators of middle and upper price range are equipped with a dual-slot and sometimes three-slot cooling systems.


Multi I/O capabilities are based on ITE IT8620E chip which controls the operation of the system fans, COM and PS/2 ports, as well as provides the monitors.


To support network connections there is a GB LAN-controller Realtek RTL8111F.


Sound subsystem of the model is based on the 8-channel HDA codec Realtek ALC887, which supports the audio systems of format 2/4/5.1/7.1.


Between slots for expansion cards two chips BIOS are installed. In case of failure of the main chip firmware you can resume operation of the computer by restoring from a backup firmware chip.


Interface panel of the model contains the following ports:

  • 1 x PS/2 (keyboard or mouse);
  • 4 x USB 2.0;
  • 1 x D-Sub;
  • 1 x DVI-D;
  • 1 x HDMI;
  • 1 x LAN (RJ45);
  • 3 x audio ports.

In general, this arrangement is quite successful, taking into account the capabilities of the chipset and the price positioning of the model. We would like to mention two digital (DVI-D, HDMI) and one analog (D-Sub) audio outputs, which allow to connect three monitors simultaneously. Some difficulties may cause a complete absence of USB 3.0 ports, as today there are quite a lot of flash drives and other equipment to this jack.

As for the total number of interfaces USB 2.0, it can be expanded up to eight pieces using remote panels. Also you can get access to the port COM using the same way.


The possibilities of organizing the cooling system inside the case are provided by the following standard: one socket for CPU cooler and one for system fan. IF you want to install additional case fans you have to use adapters for connectors MOLEX.



Motherboard is equipped with modern preloader UEFI BIOS based on microcode AMI that has an ability to control by mouse and has functional graphics interface.


The main section called «MB Intelligent Tweaker» («M.I.T.») provides settings for the CPU clock and change the frequency of the graphics core.


Also in this section you can adjust memory timings.


Naturally, that this tool allows you to change the voltage on the main components of the system. As we known, these parameters are among the most important in the performance of overclocking.
