Motherboard GIGABYTE GA-J1900N-D3V with processor Intel Celeron J1900: review and testing

In the previous article we’ve introduced you motherboards GIGABYTE GA-J1800N-D2H and GIGABYTE GA-J1800N-D2P equipped with dual-core Intel Celeron J1800 from a new range of Intel Bay Trail-D. Its level of performance is sufficient for simple office tasks, Internet surfing and video watching, that is to perform basic daily operations.

This review will be focused on the same motherboard with more productive quad-core CPU Intel Celeron J1900 which has many differences from the above model:

As you can see, in addition to more cores, this CPU also has twice as much L2 cache and more powerful integrated graphics core. For all that there is the same extremely low TDP level of 10 W.

Intel Celeron J1900

Now let's look at more details about the model Intel Celeron J1900 resulting from the utility CPU-Z 1.69.2.


This processor supports Intel Turbo Boost technology. In nominal mode it is active, so the clock frequency is dynamically changed depending on the load. At reading time it was 2416 MHz. The multiplier in this case was set to "x29" and the core voltage was at 0.912 V.


After the transition to idle mode the CPU frequency dropped to 1333 MHz with a multiplier "x16". Voltage also was significantly decreased to 0,804 V.


Distribution of processor cache memory is as follows: 24 KB of L1 cache per each core with 6 associativity channels for caching data and 32 KB of L1 cache per each core with 8 associativity channels for caching instructions. Also 1024 KB of L2 cache per each dual-core module with 16 associativity channels are available.


The memory controller is the same as in the tested earlier Intel Celeron J1800: support of modules DDR3L-1333 wihth voltage of 1.35 V and the ability to work in dual channel mode. The maximum capacity of RAM it does not exceed 8 GB.


In comparison with Intel Celeron J1800 dynamic frequency of integrated graphics core Intel HD Graphics was increased from 792 to 854 MHz. At the same time the rated frequency remained at the same level of 688 MHz. The composition of this GPU includes four unified shader pipelines, 4 texture units, and 2 rasterization blocks.

Overall CPU Intel Celeron J1900 performance will be enough for comfortable work with a text editor, Full HD-video, Internet surfing and running not too demanding games at low graphics settings.

After introduction of integrated CPU we can move on to the review of motherboard GIGABYTE GA-J1900N-D3V.

It is worth to highlight the presence of two COM connectors and two LAN network connectors on the interface board which is an important difference of this motherboard.

Packaging and content


GIGABYTE GA-J1900N-D3V is supplied in a cardboard box painted in black color. On the front side there is a logo of the manufacturer and the model name and lists the technologies that are included in the original concept of Ultra Durable 4 Plus: high-quality solid capacitors with increased service life and field-effect transistors with low resistance of open channel. The novelty is equipped with two chips BIOS (technology UEFI DualBIOS) which allow to recover your computer in case of failure or unsuccessful firmware.


On the reverse side of the package is detailed description of all internal and external connectors, as well as key functional elements. Here are some additional technologies and features of new item:

  • integrated energy-efficient processor Intel Celeron J1900;
  • two BIOS chips with support of GIGABYTE DualBIOS;
  • improved method of laying glass fiber in the printed circuit board which increases protection against dampness and moisture;
  • protection against electrostatic discharges and voltage swings;
  • qualitative circuitry (Ultra Durable 4 Plus) can withstand high temperature and load;
  • mode 3x USB Power Boost for ports USB 3.0;
  • each USB-port is equipped with a separate safety device.


Supplied set of GIGABYTE GA-J1900N-D3V includes:

This set is quite sufficient to complete the work with the motherboard (installation in the computer case, connection of drives). It practically does not increase its final cost which is important not only for the producer but also for buyers

Design and features of this board


Novelty is made on a dark brown Mini-ITX (170 x 170 mm) textolite. Radiator of cooling system and basic slots are painted in black color and only two COM-ports on the interface panels have a turquoise color. In general we can say that the location of connectors on the board is successful enough so the connection of the connectors to them should not cause any difficulty.


On the reverse side of the PCB there are two screws that mount the radiator of cooling system. Despite its compact size and high density of components, virtually all circuitry is located on the front of it.


Now let's look at the components that are located in the top of the motherboard. There are modules for connection the block of front panel connectors and LPT-port. They include: 4-pin power connectors, CMOS jumper, block for connecting of diagnostic card and a connector for the system fan.


Disk subsystem of GIGABYTE GA-J1900N-D3V is presented by two connectors SATA 3 GB/s. Their location should not cause any problems when connecting or disconnecting SATA cables. Near there are two slots for expansion cards: PCI and mini-PCIe. The first will allow to set for example a discrete sound card, and the second wireless module Wi-Fi. At the same time it is not possible to connect mSATA-drive to it. 

Near there are two blocks to connect the front panel audio ports and S/PDIF Out.


The motherboard is equipped with two SO-DIMM slots, which support memory modules of standard DDR3/DDR3L-1333 with voltage of 1.35 V and 1.5 V (with automatic fallback to 1.35 V). When you install one module the manufacturer recommends the use slot SODIMM_1, and the total maximum available memory capacity is 8 GB.



Cooling System GIGABYTE GA-J1900N-D3V is represented by one aluminum radiator painted in black. It is in contact with the processor through a thin layer of thermal paste and is not equipped with additional cooling, so in the operation the system based on new item remains very quiet.


Based on the values of the program AIDA64, in idle mode the CPU temperature did not exceed 52° C.


During stress test this figure was increased to 81°C. Such heating is quite high, but to the critical value of 105°C there is a good margin of safety.

As for the chip temperature and power subsystem chokes, it does not exceed 48,9° C at full load.


The power subsystem of motherboard is based on two-phase scheme. In accordance with the original concept Ultra Durable 4 Plus its used solid capacitors with increased service life and field-effect transistors with low resistance of open channel. Chip Intersil ISL95836 is used as a controller. Basic 24-pin and additional 8-pin connectors are use for power feeding.    


Support of ports PS/2, COM and LPT, and monitoring function is provided by chip ITE IT8620E.


The proper functioning of the PCI slot a separate controller ITE IT8892E is used. Near there are two BIOS chips, which thanks to proprietary technology UEFI DualBIOS allow you to restore a backup of the firmware in case of failure.


Switching of video interfaces between DVI-D and D-Sub, and the correctness of their work is provided by chip ASMedia ASM1442.


Operation of four USB 3.0 ports on the interface panel is provided by a built in controller and USB 3.0-Hub Renesas Electronics uPD720210.


Networking opportunities are implemented on the basis of two Gigabit LAN-Controllers Realtek RTL8111F. This will allow to create two independent network connections for the smooth operation. In addition, there is a proprietary a utility LAN Optimizer for effective management of available resources.


The audio subsystem of motherboard is based on the 8-channel HDA-codec Realtek ALC887. It supports audio output of format 2/4/5.1/7.1.


Interface panel is equipped with the following connectors:

  • 2 x PS / 2 (keyboard and mouse);
  • 2 x COM;
  • 1 x D-Sub;
  • 1 x DVI-D;
  • 2 x LAN (RJ45);
  • 4 x USB 3.0;
  • 3 x audio jacks.

As you can see, GIGABYTE GA-J1900N-D3V is equipped with an extensive set of connectors especially considering its miniature dimensions. It will connect the analog and digital monitors, specialized equipment with COM-port, two network RJ45 cables, keyboard and mouse with PS/2 interface, as well as a few quick drive USB 3.0 connectors. A small amount of the audio ports can be easily added by setting a discrete sound card or use the front panel audio connectors.


There are two fan connectors: four-pin for installation of case cooler and three-pin for organization of additional cooling of the processor.
