Motherboard GIGABYTE GA-X99-Gaming 5 comes in a deep box made of cardboard and decorated with high-quality color printing. Most of the front side takes the logo of the series GIGABYTE G1 GAMING. The box has a hinged lid, on the reverse side which is an image of a novelty.

On the reverse side of the box is the image of GIGABYTE GA-X99-Gaming 5 and its interface panel, as well as a summary of the main characteristics. Additionally here is a description of the key features and benefits of new product:

  • 4-Way Graphics Support – supports of up to four graphics cards with the distribution lines as follows: x16 / x16 + x16 / x16 + x16 + x8 / x16 + x8 + x8 + x8.
  • IR Digital PWM & IR PowIRstage ICs - power subsystem of processor and memory is based on digital PWM controllers of fourth generation and chips of third-generation manufactured by International Rectifier.
  • Cooper Bussmann Server Level Chokes - all power circuits use chokes Cooper Bussmann with the server level of reliability and reduce heat dissipation.
  • Long Lifespan Solid Capacitors - all power circuits of the motherboard use exclusively Japanese solid capacitors of Series Durable Black.
  • Creative Sound Core 3D – the model is equipped with high quality four-core audio processor of company Creative and a set of proprietary software.
  • Swapable OP-AMP – preset operational amplifier of audio TI OPA2134PA can be easily replaced by any other, which will increasingly meet the musical tastes of the user. It has a special switch Gain Boost, which sets the gain (2.5x or 6x).
  • Nichicon High End Audio Capacitors - the audio subsystem uses special upscale audio capacitors manufactured by Nichicon.

  • GIGABYTE Direct Audio Route Design – there is the shortest route between the components of the transmission signal of audio subsystem, thus reducing the possibility of distortion, noise, and improve the quality of sound reproduction.
  • Quad DAC-UP USB Ports - the interface of the new item has wired four special USB 2.0 ports with gold-plated connectors that are designed to connect an external sound card or amplifier. They are powered not by the controller integrated into the chipset USB 2.0, but via a special converter directly from power lines. Therefore, they can provide more stable and less noisy output voltage. In the case of presence of own own power supply the power on the connector can be disabled to improve the quality of signal transmission.
  • Gold Plated Audio Ports - motherboard has installed high-quality gold-plated audio jacks for resistance to interference signal.
  • Qualcomm Atheros Killer E2201 - network controller has the capability to automatically allocate a game traffic and raise its priority in relation to the low-level system, providing low latency during transfer game data.
  • Dual M.2 - novelty is equipped with two interfaces M.2. The first is used for the installation of drives (carrying capacity up to 10 Gb/s), while the second is designed for wireless interfaces (sold separately).
  • All New Heat Sink Design - design of cooling system radiators has been improved to provide a spectacular appearance and efficient operation.

In the box with the test model, in addition to the disk with the software and plug of the interface board, we found six SATA cables, splitter ATX12V, Bridge 2-Way NVIDIA SLI, Bridge 2-Way AMD CrossFireX, two bridges 3-Way NVIDIA SLI and bridge 4-Way NVIDIA SLI.

Model GIGABYTE GA-X99-Gaming 5 is made on the matte black PCB of format ATX (305 x 244 mm). In general the design of product has made a very good impression, not least thanks to the stylish design of the cooling system radiators in the spirit of the series GIGABYTE G1 GAMING, which adds the recognition to appearance of motherboard.

Traditionally, we note some interesting moments for fans of modding. So, plug of the interface board is equipped with a backlight for more comfortable connecting of peripherals. In turn, the radiator for cooling the chipset and the strip that separates the area of the PCB and the sound system also has red LED-backlit.

Using the supplied utility GIGABYTE Ambient LED, the user can select the backlight of audio codec and disable lighting of interface panel.

With respect to on-board layout elements, in general it is quite competent: DIMM-slots have latches only on one side, and SATA ports are arranged parallel to the surface of the board. Other ports and connectors are also easily accessible.

The reverse side of the PCB is notable by the presence of the standard base plate of CPU socket and screw fastening of the radiator.

The possibilities of organize a disk subsystem are presented by socket M.2 with carrying capacity up to 10 Gb/s (support of SSD-drives of format M.2 2242, 2260 and 2280), eight SATA 6 Gb/s ports and one SSTA Express which is compatible with two SATA 6 Gb/s. There is a support of arrays SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10. Due to the lack of free chipset lines the simultaneous use of SATA Express and M.2 is impossible. Also note the additional interface M.2, which is intended for the optional wireless interfaces Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The system board GIGABYTE GA-X99-Gaming 5 has eight DIMM-slots for memory modules of DDR4 standard which are equipped with clamps only on one side. RAM can operate in four-channel mode. To implement the multi channel modes the plates should be installed according one of the following schemes.

Modules operating at frequencies from 2133 MHz in the nominal mode and up to 3000 MHz in overclocking mode are supported. Maximum memory capacity can reach 64 GB, which is sufficient for almost all tasks.

Cooling system of the product includes two aluminum radiators, connected by heat pipe. The first is installed directly on chipset Intel X99, while the second covers the power elements. In the process of testing the following temperature indices were fixed:

  • radiator for chipset cooling – 35.3°C;
  • radiator for cooling of processor elements power – 45.4°C.

The obtained results clearly indicate the good performance of the installed cooling system, indicating about the correct selection of materials and design of radiators.

Processor power supply is performed via 6-phase scheme for computational cores and additional joints. Converter is based on a digital PWM controller IR3580. The circuitry is made by high quality components such as: black solid capacitors Durable Black, chips of Company International Rectifier with design Single Package as well as energy efficient chokes Cooper Bussmann. Basic 24-pin and additional 8-pin connectors are use for power feeding. Also here you can find additional PCI Express socket. It will be useful for building of strong graphics subsystem made of several graphics cards.

Special attention is given the previously mentioned complete splitter ATX12V, which is connected to the 8-pin power connector and allows you to power the three additional 8-pin power cables ATX12V. According to official recommendations, its use is desirable to provide sufficient power during extreme overclocking.
