Nettop Shuttle DS47: review and testing

his article is devoted to product of Shuttle Company which currently specializes in the production of mini-computers and monoblocks for various purposes. It was founded in 1983 with the main representative in Taiwan.

Among its key achievements the most important is the launch of the first commercially successful SFF-PC. Now this term means Small Form Factor, but this acronym was proposed by third-party manufacturers who produce computers of this form factor. Originally, the phrase sounded like Shuttle Form Factor.

The advantages of the company are powerful research and development center which includes about 200 engineers. All devices are based only on high-quality components of renowned manufacturers. It is important to note that the Shuttle is not only engaged in building of computers, but independently produces motherboards for them.

Nettop Shuttle DS47 is equipped with a built-in dual-core processor Intel Celeron 847 with a nominal clock speed of 1100 MHz. During the stress test the CPU multiplier value was at "x11", and the voltage at the moment of reading was at 1.056 V.

After the transition to the idle mode CPU frequency was dropped to 800 MHz with a multiplier "x8". Core voltage at this time was at around 0.696 V.

The cache memory of the CPU is distributed as follows: 32 KB of L1 cache per core with 8 associativity channels for data caching and 32 KB of L1 cache per core with 8 associativity channels for instructions caching. Chipset Intel NM70 Express is a basis of motherboard Shuttle Mainboard FS47. It has a self-supporting of six USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0, four SATA (one SATA 6 Gb/s and three SATA 3 Gb/s) and four PCI Express 2.0 slots.

The device is made in a fairly compact metal case with dimensions of 200 x 165 x 39,5 mm. The structure is made of metal, and some of its sides have the manufacturer's logo.

Front side has two COM-ports (COM1 supports standards RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485 and COM2 only the RS-232), card reader (SD, SDHC and SDXC), a power button, LED indicator of hard drive (red) and start the computer (blue), as well as a four USB 2.0 ports.

All other connectors are located on the back interface panel. Here you can find: four-pin connector for external power button or CMOS, port DVI-I, interface HDMI 1.3, microphone input together with Ln in/out for headphones,   two USB 3.0 ports, two network interfaces RJ45 and power connector.

Supplied mount VESA, allows you to set a nettop for example, on the back side of the monitor. To do this first you need to screw two metal plates with four bolts and then lock the device with four locks.

After unscrewing the two screws and remove the protective covers we get access to internal components. Here on a special frame there is a module for 2.5-inch drive (supporting devices with a thickness of 9.5 to 12 mm), SO-DIMM-slots for RAM DDR3, mSATA-connector for compact storage and wireless networking module Wi- Fi in connector mini-PCIe.

After removing the frame with storage module we can estimate the location of all the components on the motherboard, as well as access to the battery BIOS and additional four-pin system fan connector.

Cooling system Shuttle DS47 is completely silent, and consists of two parts. The first acts as a small aluminum radiator placed on the transistors of the power subsystem.

The second part of the cooling system is a large aluminum plate on the back side of the PCB. It is in contact with the processor and chipset through two small platforms connected by copper heat pipe through a thin layer of thermal paste.

Built-in card reader operates under the chip Genesys Logic GL827L. It is compatible with specification SD 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0, as well as MMC 3.X, 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2.

To support network connections two Gigabit LAN-controllers Realtek RTL8111G which can operate in Teaming are used.

The audio subsystem of Shuttle DS47 is based on 5.1-channel HDA-codec Realtek ALC662.

At the bottom of the case near the air vent we could found Wi-Fi-module antenna. This position is good as in any way to block it at this place will be difficult.

Since the device is available as barebone-system, for testing of Shuttle DS47 we have used one RAM module DDR3-1333 Transcend JM1333KSN-2G with capacity 2 GB and SSD-drive Silicon Power Velox V55 with capacity of 60 GB.

Power supply of nettop is effected by an external unit Asian Power Devices DA-65A19. It has a capacity of 65 W at a voltage of 19 V and a current of 3.42 A. Taking into account the maximum level of TDP for the Intel Celeron 847 does not exceed 17 W, this power supply unit will be more than enough.

BIOS Aptio of the company American Megatrends Inc is applied as preloader. It is equipped with a classic and quite familiar interface, which consists of five sections. The first tab «Main» allows you to set the date and time, as well as find out the frequency of the processor and the amount of installed RAM.

Most of the settings of the configuration of the major components are concentrated in the section «Advanced». In particular, there is an opportunity to change the mode of the slot mini-PCIe: enable support of expansion cards or SSD-drive with built-in mSATA.

Also here is a small section which real-time displays readings of temperature of the CPU and motherboard, and supply voltage of key components.

In tab «Boot» you can set the sequence of equipment loading at system startup, and enable compatibility mode (subsection «Boot mode select») with operating systems that do not support UEFI.

Comparison of the results of performance tests was carried out with entry-level compact desktop computers, as well as with energy efficient motherboards with built-in CPU.

Performance of cores Intel Celeron 847 was low enough that can be clearly seen in the tests Cinebench 11.529 and Futuremark 3DMark Vantage. These graphs clearly show that the performance of the product is at level Intel Celeron J1800, at the same time its speed of the graphics subsystem is 50-60% lower. It is an affect of the use of 32nm microarchitecture Intel Sandy Bridge.

If we talk about the gaming features of the test model, it will handle only the most undemanding games on low graphics settings and low resolution output.

Here it is necessary to take into account that the Shuttle DS47 is positioned primarily as a universal media player, so let's for example examine its ability to playback Full HD-video.

 As a result it coped with this task, although the CPU load when playing test files by player Media Player Classic Home Cinema from package of codecs K-lite Codec Pack Mega Version 10.6.0 was at the level of 40-45%.

Energy consumption of Shuttle DS47 showed the best result either in idle mode (10 W) or at full load with a programs AIDA64 and MSI Kombustor (27 W). This allows you to use the device in mode 24/7 without having to worry about large power consumption.
