Design and elements layout

ASUS Fonepad 8 (FE380CG) ASUS Fonepad 8 (FE380CG)

ASUS Fonepad 8 is made in a familiar proprietary style, which is characterized not only gently rounded at the ends, but on the transitions of the side faces on the back of the housing. With this tablet is in good hands. Moreover, the device is easy to hold with one hand. Despite the 8-inch display, it is perceived very compact. This became possible thanks to a rather modest dimensions: 120 x 214 x 8,9 mm and weighs about 310 g. New product is available in several colors: white, black, gold and red. So everyone can choose own version.

ASUS Fonepad 8 (FE380CG)

The front face is covered with a protective glass (manufacturer does not specify the brand) with a good oleophobic coating. White frame around the display is about 6 mm on the sides and 20 mm from the bottom and the top, which is quite a good indicator for the 8-inch models. Along the contour is matte silver bezel, which is slightly raised above the display and partially protects it against minor mechanical damage.

In the center above the display is located relatively wide grill of the speakers, and below are proximity and lighting sensors, as well as the front eye of the camera. At the bottom of the grid is a multimedia speaker and silver logo of the manufacturer. Buttons are on-screen.

The back of the ASUS Fonepad 8 is combined with white sidewalls and represented white slip matte plastic (polycarbonate) with a pleasant relief texture. In the upper corner is the main camera lens without flash. Below is a logo «ASUS», and closer to the bottom edge «Intel Inside». Also here is service information.

The right side has the volume rocker and button "power/lock" is strongly enough made at the rear part. The place is quite unusual, so it will take some time to get used for such configuration, although the buttons are well marked and have a clear pressing. The left side, under the flap has two slots for SIM-cards (Micro-SIM) and a slot for memory cards microSD.

At the top there are: standard audio mini-jack 3,5 mm and micro-USB 2.0 with support of OTG. Bottom edge contains only the microphone.

The tablet was built on a very high level: there are no gaps. The novelty does not bend and does not change its geometry in case of moderate torsion, and the glass is not pressed and the strains are not displayed. The only thing you can complain is chipped on silver bezel of housing. However, most likely, it is a feature of our pre-sale sample.

Overall, ASUS Fonepad 8 is a high-quality product with a pleasant contemporary design and excellent ergonomics, which causes a number of positive emotions.

Display

ASUS Fonepad 8 (FE380CG)

The tablet ASUS Fonepad 8 is equipped with 8-inch IPS-display with a resolution of 1280 × 800 (HD). The density of the arrangement of pixels is 188 ppi, which is the average in a given class of devices. Complaints can occur only when displaying small fonts or work of applications that are designed for high resolution.

ASUS Fonepad 8 (FE380CG)

The display is protected by tempered glass with a decent oleophobic (grease repellent) finish. Between the glass and matrix there is an air gap, so the screen glares. But thanks to the sufficient brightness stock the picture remains readable even in bright sunny day, though noticeably fade. Minimum brightness level is quite comfortable to work in complete darkness. Screen brightness can be changed manually or use the automatic adjustment. The proximity sensor locks the screen when held close to the ear or close the cover of the cover (included in the settings).

Used screen has excellent viewing angles, natural-colored and high contrast, which leaves a pleasant experience. As in most modern flagship device, the novelty has setting of the color temperature, hue and saturation. Due to this, each user can adjust the display according to own tastes. Multi-touch technology allows up to 10 simultaneous touches, and their treatment is at a very high level. The only remark is: in case of a sharp touch to the display, the tablet can sometimes lock up and display the message: "an error report is saved." Rather, it is a software bug that will be fixed in the retail version.

On subjective impressions display ASUS Fonepad 8 is pretty good: bright, contrasting, with maximum viewing angles and pleasant color reproduction, although the individual pixels may be evident.

Sound

ASUS Fonepad 8 (FE380CG)

Model ASUS Fonepad 8 is equipped with two stereo speakers located on the front side, and has considerable scope for sound output. Speakers provide good sound with a fairly high quality playback. Here is almost all the available frequency range with a good balance, nice to listen to music and watch movies, not to mention the games.

ASUS Fonepad 8 (FE380CG)

The volume capacity is more than enough. And when you activate the mode "Music" or "Movie" (in the firmware application AudioWizard) volume becomes even greater, so noise may appear in the upper speaker (it starts to creak at the volume above 60%). Lower speaker holds up to 80% of maximum. It should be noted that the mode "Movie" provides a cleaner and surround sound than the "Music".

The sound of the headphones can be described as a nice and loud enough (checked on the game's Kingston HyperX Cloud with an impedance of 60 Ohms). Like during playing through the speakers, the mode "Movie" adds noticeable depth in sounding.

The earpiece (upper media) does its job very well: the volume is sufficient, and the voice quality is great (depending on the operator and the interlocutor). Vibrocall is quite loud (clear and prolonged), but if the tablet is in the bag you can lose the call. For more comfortable making calls we advice to acquire a qualitative wireless headset.

Camera

ASUS Fonepad 8 (FE380CG)

Novelty is equipped with two digital camera module. The front has a 2-megapixel sensor and lens with aperture f/2.4. You can record video with a resolution of 1280 x 720. The focus here is fixed. Its capacity is sufficient for video calls, and under favorable conditions can get a decent self-portrait (Selfie).

ASUS Fonepad 8 (FE380CG)

The main camera has a module 5-megapixel and lens with aperture f/2.0. There is autofocus, digital video stabilization (only at 720p) and the system eliminate hand shaking at the photo. The flash is not available. Photos have a resolution of 2560 x 1920. The video is shot in 1080p format MP4. The video quality is average, the details are quite low, and color is not too bright. Sound is mono. Image quality is not gone from the video: close objects look pretty good, the general plan clearly shows the aggressive noise reduction system performance. So capabilities of camera will be enough for notes or photos with an average level of detail.

Brand camera app has a nice appearance and intuitive interface, as well as a considerable range of options. Here are screen buttons for quick switching between video/photo. Shooting in modes «HDR», “Panorama”, "Intelligent remote", "Serial shots" etc is supported. Among the options you can change the resolution, ISO, white balance, exposure and focus mode. It should be noted that the volume rocker can be assigned to the shutter.
