ASUS VivoTab Note 8 tablet: review and testing

On our portal you can often find mention about the rapid development of portable PCs such as tablets and smartphones. And it is a fact, since the power of the modern gadget for some indicators is superior to the complex computers NASA, which in the 60s led out the person into space. However, not all users are in a hurry to completely switch from PC to mobile phone, because the first is faster and easier thanks to the familiar to all of us OS Windows. Fortunately, the popular operating system also makes no headway, because the tablets in addition to the growing power of the hardware, and now can boast the presence of convenient software platform. And the first tablet PC with preinstalled Windows 8.1 in our lab is the ASUS VivoTab Note 8.

ASUS VivoTab Note 8

New product offers a good set of parameters, most of which are not inferior to similar devices running from OS Android and as an added benefit (at least for most people) is the professional digital pen Wacom, which comes bundled with the tablet. At first glance it may seem that the 8-inch novelty is not the best approach for using the stylus because of the complexity of interaction with small elements of the operating system and applications. However, in practice it may be otherwise.

Packaging, content and accessories

ASUS VivoTab Note 8

The novelty is shipped in a relatively small and light box, made of high quality thick white cardboard. Package design is simple enough, except the front side, which has a model name, as well as image along with the stylus Wacom. Informativeness of the package can be called insufficient, due to the absence of any technical information on its faces. However, the front side of the box successfully conveys to the buyer the main message of the design: the device has pre-installed Windows 8.1, and the scope of delivery includes a digital pen Wacom.

In addition to the above mentioned elements, the user can purchase additional cover ASUS VivoTab Note 8 VersaSleeve, which is a very useful accessory, both to protect the device, and as a stand for typing or watching video.

Tablet ASUS VivoTab Note 8 has quite a pleasant look, the distinctive features of which are dark colors and rounded contours of the rear and side walls. Its strict style combines with the new version of Windows, but after the first use of the device its format seems inappropriate for the operating system. The reason for this view can be called a very small diagonal display and mainly portrait orientation of the product. However, for most people, this aspect is no longer play a significant role after a deeper acquaintance with the touch interface and other nuances that are designed specifically for this type of device.

Case of the tablet is made of plastic or rather of polycarbonate, with excellent build quality and layout details gaps are absent. The front side is covered by a protective glass. Glass stands out a bit among the monolithic tablet, because is unable to cope with the relatively strong pressure, which leads to strain the image on the display. However, during normal operation, such an effect does not occur. Around the contour it has a small glossy bezel, partly protects the glass panel. By the way, its size is sufficient to hold the device in landscape orientation without accidental contact with the touch area. Dimensions and weight are 220,9 x 133,8 x 10,95 mm and 380 grams, respectively, which has a positive effect of the appliance, especially for people with active lifestyles.

The back side of the case is a pleasant tactile matte material that reminds a soft-touch plastic, but it is not. This surface is painted in black with some "spark", which together with the texture of the material makes it possible to call a very practical. It should be noted that the glossy bezel around the display continues to sidewall and visually separate them into halves.

Elements layout

ASUS VivoTab Note 8 has enough number of ports and buttons. However, the absence of micro-HDMI port may cause inconvenience to users who expect to connect the tablet to a monitor or TV (technology Miracast is still not perfect). Location of elements is standard and comfortable enough.

At the top front panel is the eye of front-facing camera and proximity sensor. The tablet does not have notification indicator that due to the absence of mobile communication module is not particularly critical. At the bottom is a logo of the manufacturer.

The right side of the case contains: the power / lock button, microphone hole, the volume rocker and a slot for storing the digital pen. Last is pretty good "masked", so it does not have tactile feel and does not create any discomfort during the operation of the device. Buttons are conveniently located, but quite slow pressed, and they have a short travel that sometimes does not allow you to fully enjoy the moment of operation. This is especially true of the power/lock button, the boundaries of which barely protrude from the case. However, such an implementation of element protects the user from the accidental clicks.

On the left side the manufacturer placed a card reader that supports memory cards microSD, and systemic button Windows. By the way, in case of simultaneously pressing the Windows and Power the system menu is opened. In traditional version it is called by the key combination [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Del].

The top of the tablet closer to the right side has audio jack (mini-jack 3,5 mm) and jack micro-USB. Below any items are absent.

Stylus is securely fixed inside the product, so the random drops during usage are absent. Nevertheless, it is easily removed with right hand (in the vertical orientation of the device) because of the presence of a special slot on the back side of the case. Digital pen has a relatively small thickness, so some users may need time to adapt to this feature. The pen has only one button. It performs an alternative action that is specific to a certain program. For example, in a graphics editor Paint pressing the button activates the "Eraser", and in OS Windows - the menu of mouse right click (context menu).

Input equipment

Tablet ASUS VivoTab Note 8 provides the user two basic modes of input: through the touch screen and on-screen keyboard or a digital pen Wacom. Virtual keyboard of operating system Windows 8.1 is comfortable enough for a set of small amounts of data, but automatically and at the right time, it runs only in the shell Modern UI. Also it is necessary to take into account its limited functionality, which implies the absence of some keys, for example, F-row, [Del], [Print Screen] and others. However, the user can always use additional alternative and more functional software. Also do not forget that the device supports wireless connection (via Bluetooth 4.0) of various manipulators and keyboards that allows you to organize mobile and functional workspace.

Using the stylus in specific situations can increase productivity of the new product. These scenarios include the work with graphics editors, office applications, notes, etc. However, taking into account the small screen size of the tablet, to press some small elements of Windows 8.1 or shell application by digital pen the first time is quite difficult. After a short period of adaptation clicking is performed intuitively.

Digital Wacom pen is a useful and very convenient addition to the standard input devices. We will not describe all application scenarios of stylus. We note only that from a technical point of view it does not cause complaints. A good solution can be called a shutdown function touch of display layer for input with fingers at the digital pen on a distance of about two centimeters: the screen of the tablet has cursor. Also professional stylus supports recognition of over a thousand degrees pressing (1024 according to the manufacturer), which will be useful for drawing.
