Tablet Huawei MediaPad Honor X1: review and testing

Here is an opinion that specialized devices more effectively cope with specifically assigned tasks, rather than a universal device. Narrow focus of gadget allows you to accumulate resources in a certain way, not wasting power on secondary objectives. Axiom "one application has one destination" is still current. However, this does not reduce the natural desire to have at own disposal a device that copes equally well with a wide range of tasks.

Huawei MediaPad Honor X1

Huawei is one of the leaders in the introduction of advanced mobile technologies. And it tried to solve this difficult issue by launching an interesting novelty. Tablet Huawei MediaPad Honor X1 combines both functional and visual features that are inherent in several types of mobile devices. Slim and elegant aluminum housing unit looks like a small Phablet, than the full 7-inch tablet, and the performance of the hardware platform may compete with 10-inch models. However thanks to the integrated radio module with support of phone calls the novelty can easily perform functions of a modern smartphone.

As you can see from the above, this model has a rather interesting and at the same time promising characteristics.

Packaging and content

Tablet Huawei MediaPad Honor X1 is ahipped in a small and very stylish box. It is made of thick, high-quality cardboard and fully colored in blue color. The external appearance of the package is a fine example of the Eastern tradition. Here you won’t find bright colorful logos or advertising. All items are in the strict minimalism aspects.

The right side of the box has only the name of the device, while the back side of the package contains a small table with a list of specifications of the tablet and three small icons. Other elements include export stickers.

Delivery set of Huawei MediaPad Honor X1 also is minimalist. It includes: charger, USB-cable, branded clip for the removal of Micro-SIM and microSD cards and quick start guide. The information from the official website also indicates about the presence of a wired headset in the kit, but in our case it was absent.

Design and elements layout

Huawei MediaPad Honor X1

The appearance of new item includes strict corporate style inherent in almost all Huawei mobile devices. Here are the familiar design ideas regarding the delimitation of workspaces and design elements. However, thanks to the noble materials and painstaking work of engineers and developers it looks still fresh, stylish and very attractive.

Huawei MediaPad Honor X1

The main feature of the tablet Huawei MediaPad Honor X1 is its thin, light and very elegant body. It is based on three well combined components: metal, glass and high quality plastic. The frame is made from a single piece of anodized aluminum, which gives the device not only tangible stiffness, but also very pleasant tactile sensations. Only the top and bottom parts of the unit have small plastic white inserts. Under them there are antennas of radio modules. Comfortable cool on the side and rear of the case allows you to use the device for a long time, without feeling discomfort.

Due to the modest size (184 x 104 x 7,2 mm) and low weight (239 g) tablet is almost weightless in your hand, and can be used for short walk around the city, and in the longer trips. It should be noted that the 7-inch form factor perfectly suits for transportation, because equally good fits in pocket of men's coat, and a small female handbag.

Huawei MediaPad Honor X1 is available in two colors: white and black. Since the tablet is positioned as a premium device, the other colors are not very harmoniously into this concept. In our opinion, the device will be enjoyed by most buyers, but especially by connoisseurs of classical design.

The front panel of the tablet is completely covered by tempered glass, which has an excellent oleophobic coating and anti-glare filter. Around the contour here is a small chrome-plated plastic edging that in addition to decorative purposes is an additional protection against external influences. The frames around the display are modest: 15 mm top and bottom, as well as 4 mm on each side.

Above of the screen Huawei MediaPad Honor X1 you will notice: front camera lens, proximity and lighting sensors, LED indicator and earpiece hole covered with metal bars. Below under the display you won’t find standard buttons "Back", "Home" and "Menu" as they are replaced by software versions.

The top of the unit has a 3.5mm audio jack for a headset and a small microphone hole. On the bottom are a micro-USB connector and one hole of additional microphone.

The right side of the unit contains: two trays for card (Micro-SIM and microSD), the power button and volume rocker. Lower bound of the device is free of any connectors and components.

The back side of the tablet can be divided into three components: a large metal base made of anodized aluminum, and two small inserts of white matte plastic. These elements are fit very tightly. They have smooth and rather pleasant to the touch texture without any grooves or hooks. In the center of the metal base is engraved a small logo of the manufacturer. In the upper left corner of the plastic insert is the main camera lens and LED flash. And in the right corner of the lower half is a multimedia speaker grille. In general, such a design looks quite stylish and practical.

In addition, we would like to note the excellent build quality of Huawei MediaPad Honor X1. It is quite high and is one of the best in this class of devices. Body parts are fit tight: you won’t notice any gaps. Also we were pleasantly pleased with excellent level of stiffness. Under moderate pressure the device geometry cannot be deformed thanks to the aluminum frame at the base of the housing, and the picture on the screen remains without strains or other noticeable artifacts.

Display

Huawei MediaPad Honor X1

One of the main advantages of the tablet Huawei MediaPad Honor X1 is a high-quality screen. Novelty is equipped with 7-inch IPS-display with a resolution of 1920 by 1200 pixels and a pixel density of 323 ppi. It is based on low-temperature polysilicon technology «LTPS», which provides higher sensitivity of the screen and significantly reduces energy consumption.

Huawei MediaPad Honor X1

Traditionally, the IPS-matrix display has high contrast and wide viewing angles. Despite the acute angles, the picture on the screen does not fade and is rich and well-readable. Color reproduction provides natural and vibrant colors and shades. White balance has a good balance without shift in warm or cool colors. In addition, there is an opportunity to adjust the color temperature of the screen through a special menu.

Display backlight is also at a high level and has a good range of adjustment. Its brightness is enough in all conditions, which makes it easy to use the device as a sunny day or in total darkness.

The integrity and safety of the screen is provided by tempered glass. It has a good oleophobic coating and quite good anti-glare filter. In general, a display unit is produced using technology OGS, which is characterized by the absence of air interlayer between the glass and the display. This engineering solution allows to make the picture more clear and detailed.

Built-in touch screen substrate can recognize up to 10 simultaneous key presses. It is very sensitive and reacts instantly to even the slightest touch. Finger sliding over the protective glass is very easy and pleasant. It absolutely doesn’t cause any discomfort. Due to the high sensitivity the display has the support of the work of thin gloves.

Sound

Huawei MediaPad Honor X1

Tablet Huawei MediaPad Honor X1 is equipped with good multimedia speaker, which is placed in the lower right corner of the back side of the case. Despite that fact that the rear surface of the gadget is completely flat, and near speaker’s grill there are no special legs, device sound is muted, and only slightly lose in sonority, which in some cases only improves the sound. The accessible sound range includes high frequencies and low and middle ones fade into the background. However, the main advantage of the device is pretty loud, but at the same time clear sound. In general, the volume of multimedia speakers is enough for gaming, watching videos and make calls without any additional devices.

In addition, the gadget is equipped with a 3.5mm audio jack and it can connect external audio devices. For example, in our test headphones Kingston HyperX Cloud the sound was more vivid and detailed, and in the frequency range appeared not only high, but also middle and bass gained more depth and volume.

Due to the fact that the tablet provides the ability to make phone calls, the device is equipped with quite a good earpiece. It has a good and moderately loud sound that can provide a pleasant voice. It's quite another matter that to hold the 7-inch tablet during a conversation is not very comfortable. Therefore, the use of the headset is a great way.

Camera

Since the novelty is positioned as a premium device, along with a stylish design and a good screen, it boasts of two high-quality digital cameras.

Huawei MediaPad Honor X1

The main is represented by 13-megapixel module with an aperture of f/2.4, autofocus and LED flash,. It is able to record video at resolutions up to 1080p at 30 fps. Also, there is a support for HDR-shooting.

The quality of the captured images at a high level. Image pleasantly pleased by natural colors with bright and vibrant colors. The picture looks vivid and very attractive. In addition the merits of the main camera include a good contrast and high image detail. You can achieve excellent results under the correct angle. The only thing you can complain about is a little strange autofocus algorithm.

As for the captured video, it also deserves praise. We have no complaints either the quality of the image or the quality of the recorded sound. Video stream has a lovely color rendering and good contrast and audio has good detail and minimal background noise and interference.

Huawei MediaPad Honor X1

The front camera of the tablet is presented 5-megapixel module with an aperture of f/2.4 and fixed focus. It is able to record video at resolutions up to 1080p at 30 fps. The quality is enough not only for video calls and web conferencing, but also for shooting pretty good self-portraits.

Proprietary software that is responsible for the operation of the camera has concise design and intuitive interface. The menu has a good set of features, and also provides easy access to the settings, the location of which is stored after the first use. Among the usual functions of the software are a good mode of electronic image stabilization and rather interesting adaptive autofocus. Its role is to actively tracking moving objects in the frame and instantaneous adjustment of the focal length. For the convenience here is the ability to take pictures by pressing the volume rocker key, which in this case simulates the shutter button.
