CHIEFTEC GPF-250P PSU review and performance testing

CHIEFTEC Company produces many cases of mini-ITX format with preset power sources. However during overview of system unit is not always possible to examine other devices and test them in practice. After all compact power sources produced by CHIEFTEC Company are also interesting. First of all we mean their attractive cost. Previously units of SFX/TFX format were less popular as they had relatively low power and could not “feed” the productive systems. Today when many producers are interesting in reducing of energy consumption, the purchase of power supply unit with capacity 200-250 W for a home usage does not look so senseless. The same meaning is for all devices including SFX/TFX. Using this device it became possible to collect not only small but also the productive system.

Therefore we are always excited about new compact power supply units in our lab. This time we will focus on model CHIEFTEC GPF-250P with power 250 W.

CHIEFTEC GPF-250P

Packing, delivery set and design

Power supply unit CHIEFTEC GPF-250P is supplied as OEM-version without a box. Also delivery set does not include power cable and mounting screws.

CHIEFTEC GPF-250P

Model CHIEFTEC GPF-250P belongs to the set of compact power sources. It is made in TFX format and has next dimensions 175x65x86mm. For comparison dimension of standard ATX format device is 160x150x86mm.

CHIEFTEC GPF-250P is covered with a layer of gray prime coating which is typical for OEM-solutions. Most panels are continuous, except top and front parts. Fan is placed in the first part and the second is a perforated grid. Power supply turn off button is absent.

Wires are soldered directly on circuit board  and come out through a round hole. Theoretically it will not make discomfort during connecting devices inside the computer case because there is not a lot of a cable like in the full-size power units.

Main 20 +4 power connector ATX is of dismountable type. For additional power 4-pin connector ATX12V is provided.

PCIe connectors are absent although for compact computers is not so critical because most of them are not equipped with discrete video accelerators and use the integrated graphics core.

Even if the user installs the external graphics card in most cases this is low-profile energy-efficient solution and power through the PCI Express x16 slot on the motherboard will be enough.

If your system requires video card with power consumption over 75W in this case you can always use a special adapters PATA-to-PCIE. Fortunately they are cheap and available at any computer shop.

Quantity of connectors and wire lengths would be enough to power up all basic devices inside a compact case. Although the availability of an additional pair of SATA connectors would not be excess because today SATA interface became more and more popular even if it is a mini-computer.

CHIEFTEC GPF-250P

On the surface of bottom of the case the manufacturer specified a label with CHIEFTEC GPF-250P technical data. Channel power +12V is 228 W; line +3.3V and +5V have a maximum total capacity of 90 W and capable of operate with load of 13A and 14A, respectively. Channel 12V is divided into two lines. Each is designed for load 13A. In addition, the total current of the selected channel should not exceed 19A.

Power supply unit does not have a certificate of 80 PLUS directive. It's a little bit strange, because according to the specification it can operate over the entire range of input voltage (100 – 240W). Label with the inscription “85+” hints that the efficiency of the device at the top point reaches at least 85%. We can suppose that the certificate 80 PLUS (Bronze) was not received for other reasons such as the power factor at 50% load is below 0.9. Let's try to deal with this point during testing.

Once again we would like to note a wide input voltage range from 100 to 240W. This fact allows to exclude the external voltage regulator in an unstable power supply conditions.

Internal device

Disassembly process of CHIEFTEC GPF-250P is not difficult. You need to remove four screws securing the ends of the top cover. One of them is sealed with a special sticker. If you will damage this sticker the warranty the device will not be available.

Fan 2.16W Yate Loon D80SM-12B with dimension 80mm is used to cool internal power supply components. Unfortunately we could not find its complete specification. According to the marking this fan based on sliding bearing (the letter “S” on the labeling) and belongs to the series with an average speed of rotation (the letter «M» on labeling).

The basis of CHIEFTEC GPF-250P is the platform of CWT Company. In spite of its compact dimensions, within device there are all joints which are typical of high-quality full-size ATX format solutions.

At the input there is a filter for smoothing of high-frequency noise emitted to network by power supply network. It includes all necessary elements: four Y and two X-capacitor, three choke coil and varistor. That is very praiseworthy that in such limited space the manufacturer did not save on the elements.

Due to large areal density of components we could not examine labeling. In particular, the name of manufacture of high-voltage capacitor circuit remains unknown. But its characteristics we could identify 82 μF x 40V. The capacity of this element does not give confidence especially taking into account the power of supply unit.

Passive cooling system consists of two long aluminum radiators. The first contains fixed power elements of APFC module and keys of main converter and the second includes diode packs for rectifying the output voltage.

Supply voltage stabilization has group principle: a large choke coil is wound with channels +5V and +12V, small coil with +3.3V.

Electrolytic capacitors with high operating temperature up to 105°C are used for pulsing filter. The manufacturers of these devices are CapXon, AISHI and JunFu Companies. If the first brand is quite popular among amateur radio operators, the last two have more negative reviews than positive due to quality. One positive fact is that CapXon capacitors are mounted on a more loaded line +12V.

According to the technical specifications, CHIEFTEC GPF-250P power supply unit has OVP, UVP, OPP and SCP protection. Output voltage control is based on the chip EST7610B.

Reverse side of the textolite has a lot of SMD-components, as well as some controllers. The quality of soldering has no claim: all channels are straight, saggs and other defects were not found.

Testing

Cross-load characteristics

According to ATX12V standard the permissible range of voltage deviations for all power lines is ± 5% of the nominal line.

During cross-load tests the main power lines had following voltages deviations:

  • line +3,3V: from -2% to +2%;
  • line +5V: from -5% to -1%;
  • line +12V: from -2% to +5%.

According to the graphs stability is quite high. Compared with power supply units that are built-in in modern circuitry with DC-DC converters, here we can observe a wide range of deviations. The permissible norms ± 5% of line rating were within limits. The installation of separate stabilization system would cause the cost increase however CHIEFTEC GPF-250P belongs to supply units intended for mass consumers.

Noise and pulsing over the voltage range

 According to ATX12V standard the following permissible norms of pulsing level are used:

  • lines +3,3V and +5V: 50 mV;
  • line +12V: 120 mV.

Filter unit of output voltages made a good impression. Despite the use of some elements of the little-known producers, pulsing level on lines +3.3V and +5V does not exceed 50 mV. Peak-to-peak amplitude value in channel +12V is shifted to the range of 50-100 mV, but for this line this result is quite acceptable.
