DDR3-1866 Kingston HyperX FURY HX318C10FBK2/16 (16GB) kit RAM review

Although DDR4 memory is on the way, the users are unlikely to move immediately to the new standard. There are several reasons, the most important of which is the great expense during modernization of PCs. In connection with this state of affairs, DDR3 memory will have leading positions.

Many manufacturers have the same opinion and continue to saturate the market with solutions of standard DDR3. Most recently, in this regard the company Kingston has announced a new series called Kingston HyperX FURY. It is designed for a mass audience and should replace lineup Kingston HyperX Blu. The new series includes kits with frequency 1333/1600/1866 MHz and capacity 4/8/16 GB. In addition, there are four options for coloring the radiator: black, blue, red and white. Memory can be purchased as single modules with capacity of 4 or 8 GB, and in sets of two pieces. There is no information about the price.

To make the introduction of Kingston HyperX FURY series we are going to use kit of memory DDR3-1866 Kingston HyperX FURY HX318C10FBK2/16 with capacity of16GB.

Kit DDR3-1866 Kingston HyperX FURY HX318C10FBK2/16 consists of two modules which are supplied in a plastic box with transparent top cover. It provides reliable protection of memory plated during transport from mechanical damage and breakdown of static electricity. On the top of the box you can find a special tape with brief information about the memory kit and warranty.

Inside the package except the modules there are manual for their installation and logo sticker of series Kingston HyperX.

The first thing that attracts the attention when you look at plates DDR3-1866 Kingston HyperX FURY HX318C10FBK2/16 is an updated radiator. In the previous series of Kingston HyperX Blu two conventional aluminum plates glued to the memory chips were used. Here, the cooling system has a complicated configuration with a set of slots to increase the convection and more rapid removal of heat from the chip. Note that modules were not much incresed in size. The upper edge of the radiator protrudes over textolite only a few millimeters. Therefore, a memory of Kingston HyperX FURY will be compatible with most CPU coolers.

According the usage the installed cooling system copes with its task. During testing under continuous load the module temperature was only 39°C, while competitors running at the same speed have usually 5-10°C higher.

Note that according to the specification the maximum air temperature for kit DDR3-1866 Kingston HyperX FURY HX318C10FBK2/16 is 85°C.

The plates are made on black PCB both sides of which have 8 memory chips. Unfortunately, we could not remove the cooling system to examine in more details the configuration of modules DDR3-1866 Kingston HyperX FURY HX318C10FBK2/16. We can only report that they use memory chips manufactured by SK Hynix which are famous for their good quality and high overclocking potential. The last assertion we'll check later during testing.

For further technical information can be obtained by using special tools. We refused to use popular programs AIDA64 and CPU-Z, as they interpret information from the SPD to the old algorithm and not always correct. To avoid possible inaccuracies it was decided to use utility Thaiphoon Burner designed specifically for the diagnosis of memory modules. Below you have a full report on the technical characteristics of the set of modules DDR3-1866 Kingston HyperX FURY HX318C10FBK2/16.

Special attention is paid to operating voltage supply. Here it is 1.5 V that is, as in conventional modules DDR3-1333 MHz. Very often for frequencies above 1600 MHz we have to have to raise voltage to achieve stable operation of the entire system. As you can see, the use of higher-quality memory chips on the modules DDR3-1866 Kingston HyperX FURY HX318C10FBK2/16 allowed to refuse this procedure.

This kit support the technology PnP (Plug and Play) so after building the computer you do not have to enter the BIOS menu and puts adjust memory frequency and timings manually. The system will do it automatically, and at the same time it will choose the best option.

Also we would like to note that a set of DDR3-1866 Kingston HyperX FURY HX318C10FBK2/16 is compatible not only with modern platforms but also with issued a few years ago, particularly with Socket LGA1155 and Socket FM2. The level of the chipset on the motherboard does not play a role.

Before proceed directly to the testing it is important to clarify one more thing regarding not only this kit but the whole series Kingston HyperX FURY in general. Many resources during typing a note about the announcement of a new line of memory have mentioned about some automatic overclocking function, not really delving into the features. Thus first of all it has nothing common with analogues function of automatic (dynamic) overclocking of CPU or GPU (when during large load their frequency and voltage are increased and in idle drop). In kits of memory Kingston HyperX FURY this is the combination of two technologies: the above mentioned PnP and Intel XMP. That is, if the level of the motherboard allows, the profile XMP is automatically loaded (DDR3-1866 10-11-10-30). Otherwise, the system uses one of the other modes recorded in the SPD memory (table of all possible modes is shown above in the report program Thaiphoon Burner).

Opponent in testing was a kit DR3-2400 DDR3-2400 G.Skill TridentX F3-2400C10D-16GTX with capacity 16 GB (2 x 8 GB). Both kits have been tested in the following modes:

Analysis of the obtained graphs showed that the change in the parameters of RAM affects the performance of the proposed system. AIDA64 benchmark demonstrates that with increasing of modules speed the speed of copying/read/write from memory also significantly increases. In the transition from 1600 MHz to 1866 MHz these figures were increased by 15-16%, and compared to the rate 1333 the growth was approximately 36-38%. As you can see, the difference is quite significant. However, there is an increase in their performance after increasing the speed of the memory an average of 3-10%. 

As for the comparison DDR3-1866 Kingston HyperX FURY HX318C10FBK2/16 with its opponent, the latter showed a slightly better performance at the same speed. This is due to the fact that memory DDR3-2400 DDR3-2400 G.Skill TridentX F3-2400C10D-16GTX is overclocking set and can operate on the same frequency at lower timings. While the kit DDR3-1866 Kingston HyperX FURY HX318C10FBK2/16 is aimed at a mass audience and is much cheaper.
