Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone review

Every year the capabilities of photographing become better and perfect. That is not a surprise due to presence of new technological developments. Using the leading models you can forget about the existence of an entry-level camera. Moreover in many cases even an entry-level reflex camera can be left at home. It is much easier to put into pocket small smartphone rather take a half kilogram device.

Talking about the Finnish company Nokia the first thing you should pay attention is a highly innovative smartphone Nokia 808 PureView, which was introduced in 2012 and became the best device on MWC 2012 exhibition. The main feature of new item is a unique camera with a resolution of 41 megapixels and a large matrix size 1/1.2", as well as support for proprietary technology PureView ensuring a higher image. However, due to the relatively large size (as for smartphone) and orientating only for a certain market segment the device did not have a great popularity, but it allowed us to obtain various reviews to create more successful version.

Design

Nokia Lumia 1020

Previously tested Nokia Lumia 925 has more stylish design and thick aluminum frame. In comparison with this device Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone is a classic representative of Nokia Lumia line. It has all the characteristics: monolithic polycarbonate case with rounded side edges and protective Corning Gorilla Glass Shaped 3. There is only one difference – big major module of the main camera, occupying a quarter of the back side of the device. But let’s learn the peculiarities step by step.

Technically, Nokia Lumia 1020 is a revamped version of Nokia Lumia 920 model, which due to built-in module for wireless charging became much thinner. Weight of the device also decreased from 185 to 158 g which is also positive.

Nokia Lumia 1020

Tested model has black color. But you can choose among yellow and white colors. In all cases the case of the smartphone has a matte surface but unfortunately it is quite slippery. Fingerprints can be left, especially on the black model, but they are hardly noticeable and very easy to remove. Obverse is almost completely covered by a protective glass with rounded edges.

Build quality of Nokia Lumia 1020 is very high. All the elements are place very close to each other. There are no gaps. Case rigidity is also high. Also we would like to specify a protective glass that has a relatively large thickness and does not provide marks on the display under strong pressure.

Elements layout

Nokia Lumia 1020

At the top of the front side there is a quite wide and deep opening for speaker, which can be fulled by dust. To the right there are light and proximity sensors, as well as the front camera. Nokia Lumia 1020 does not have special notification indicator because all necessary information appears on display. The bottom part is wider and has three traditional touch buttons: [Back] [Home] and [Search]. Pressing the first one you will get applications manager, after pressing of the second one the voice-activated control will be activated.

On the reverse side there is a large and protrudent main camera module, which consists of lens with an integrated shutter and two flashes (LED and Xenon). Near there are several logos («Nokia», «PureView» and «Carl Zeiss») and the designation of megapixel quantity. In addition, on the back side there is a double-contact platform for connecting of corporate cover for wireless charging.

Device control elements (volume adjustment, power/lock button, etc) are placed on right edge while left edge does not have any buttons.

On the top there is a chute to install Micro-SIM-card with a hole of its removal. Also there are a headphone jack (mini-jack 3,5 mm) and an optional microphone hole. From the bottom there are: micro-USB socket, hole for small strap and wide perforated grille under which there is a main microphone and multimedia speaker.

Display

Nokia Lumia 1020

Nokia Lumia 1020 uses the same as models Nokia Lumia 920/925 screen with diagonal of 4.5 inches. This is very nice AMOLED-matrix with resolution 1280x768 pixels. The resulting pixel density is 332 ppi. It is quite enough for such diagonal to display clear pictures and smooth fonts. Of course, if you have a persistent desire it is not difficult to find out the pixels. Protection of the display is provided by a strong tempered glass with excellent oleophobic coating to promote rapid removal of fingerprints.

The major advantage of organic LED display is very high backlight brightness, which with the usage of a special antiglare coating provides excellent information visibility under the bright sunrays. Also you should not forget about almost infinite contrast range that provides a displaying of a deep black color, and color value. In some cases colors look unnatural. We should also highlight the presence of several proprietary technologies which Nokia Company provides for own devices. For example, ClearBlack involves the use of several additional film filters. Due to these filters black color is always perfectly black even in bright sunrays and under different viewing angles. PureMotion HD + increases the refresh rate of the matrix and maintains image definition at fast scrolling, however, this technology operates better on IPS-displays than on AMOLED. Despite the perfect viewing angles, the only disadvantage of used AMOLED-display is shift of color field to green hue at strong deviations from the normal.

Display settings are arranged in several independent sections. The first is brightness parameters: automatic or manual mode (low, medium, high).

Using settings of waiting mode (Nokia Glance Screen) you can specify the information to be displayed on the screen of your smartphone. For example, the current time, the notification of missed actions (messages, calls, etc). For more convenience you can adjust display mode (always turned on/off, response on palm actions, display after a certain time intervals) and turn on nighttime mode for a certain period of time, which reduces the brightness of the screen, and its color changes to red, blue or green.

An important feature of Nokia Lumia smartphones including Nokia Lumia 1020 is a touchscreen with increased level of sensitivity (it is possible to work with smartphone in gloves) and it can define up to 5 simultaneous touches. In addition, there is the possibility to activate the unlocking function by double click on the screen (waiting mode turn off). However, in this case, the battery will be consumed faster due to the constant operation of touch panel.

By the way the operation of the sensor panel can be described as ideal. Finger position and all actions are processed quickly and properly, and the finger glides over protective glass.
Finally it is important to note the setting of backlight under bright sunlight and on activated economy mode of the Smartphone. Also there is an ability to adjust the display colors by slight changing of color temperature and saturation level.
