SSD-drive KINGMAX SME35 Xvalue: review and testing

KINGMAX product range is constantly increasing due to the appearance of new models of memory cards, flash drives, memory modules, and other devices. In this review we want to introduce you another innovation from this manufacturer - SSD-drive KINGMAX SME35 Xvalue with capacity of 240 GB.

KINGMAX SME35 Xvalue

An interesting feature of this solution is the use of the controller Silicon Motion SM2246EN. Some time ago we have tested a relatively inexpensive model GeIL Zenith A3 Pro, based on the same chip, which demonstrated good speed.

KINGMAX SME35 Xvalue

New product is shipped in a cardboard box filled with good information content. The front side describes the general benefits of SSD-drive (insensitivity to vibration, low power consumption, high performance), but the back allows you to focus on the distinctive features of the model KINGMAX SME35 Xvalue.

Here is the indication about the presence of four options, use of the SATA 6 Gb/s and support for 3-year warranty. But the greatest interest is the table with speed performance of model, depending on its size.

The most capacious versions are traditionally distinguished by the highest-speed characteristics. According to the manufacturer, the 480 and 240-GB solutions have maximum sequential read speed of 540 MB/s, and write 400 and 300 MB/s, respectively. Lower capacity models have comparable read speed, but data writing to them is slower.

The inscription «Desktop Upgrade Kit» on the packaging indicates that the current equipment is designed for installation in desktop computers. Indeed the kit includes everything you may need for installation of the drive:

  • bracket for installing a 2.5-inch SSD in a 3.5-inch bay PC;
  • cable SATA;
  • power adapter with 4-pin peripheral connector PATA;
  • set of screws;
  • installation instructions.

As you can see, the list includes even an adapter for the power supply to compensate for the absence of the required interface on the power unit. The only instrument that should be purchased is crosstip screwdriver.

The case is made of black painted aluminum. The both sides contain stickers with informing about the name of the device, its capacity, power settings, the place of production (Taiwan), and the used interface.

The last one is the most popular connector SATA 6 Gb/s. There are no other controls on the drive.

To provide its attachment into a 2.5 inch drive bay or complete bracket the housing contains holes for screws (respectively on the sidewalls and the back side). Also note the warranty seal. Consequently, access to the internal components of the media is accompanied by the loss of the possibility of a free repair during 3 years from the date of purchase.

Fortunately, we had the opportunity to examine the internal layout of KINGMAX SME35 Xvalue.

It is based on four-channel controller Silicon Motion SM2246EN with support for SATA 6 Gb/s (version 3.1) and technology ECC. It is paired with RAM bank DDR3L NANYA NT5CB128M16FP-DI with capacity of 2 Gb and effective frequency of 1600 MHz. Storage is carried out in four 20-nm chips Micron NW 603 with capacity of 64 GB each. As you can see, the number of additional seats will be enough to create a 960-GB version of this drive using similar components. However, the manufacturer used the solutions up to 480 GB.

In this case, we have 256 GB where 16 GB is reserved for system internal algorithms (Wear leveling) with the aim to a more equitable use of all the memory cells and extend the life of SSD as a whole.

Due to utilities CrystalDiskInfo and SSD-Z the drive support set of modern technologies necessary for its long-term operation:

  • NCQ (native command queuing), which allows to optimize the productivity of storage;
  • S.M.A.R.T. (Self-monitoring, analysis and reporting technology) is a monitoring system that monitors the state of the drive, making possible to predict the time of its failure;
  • TRIM is a command that allows directly delete stored in the flash memory data and to release immediately unactuated place (free blocks) to record new information.

And support for technology ECC (Error-correcting code) allows you to automatically determine the read/write error information and, if possible, to correct them.

During the test drive was heated up to 38°C at room temperature of 25°C, which is quite a good result.

Primary the memory is formatted as a single NTFS volume of 240 GB or 223 GiB.
