  • Gaming App – a proprietary software that provides quickly switching between three different operating modes: «Silent», «Gaming» and «OC». Each of them will be relevant, depending on the user's current task.

In case of automatic speed control of fan blades at maximum load, the graphics core is heated to 66°C, and cooler is very quiet just 24% of its maximum capacity.

This video card is equipped with a dual-slot cooling system SAPPHIRE DUAL-X. Its two axial fans with blades diameter of 86 mm are fixed on a plastic casing that covers the radiator.

Fans FirstDo FDC10H12S9-C with the characteristics of 12 V and 0.35 A are applied. Thanks to the support of Intelligent Fan Control II they can completely stop at light load.

The heatsink consists of a copper base and 74 aluminum fins. Two copper heat pipes with a diameter of 6 mm are applied to accelerate the exchange of heat between these components. Special thermal pads are installed along the perimeter. They transfer the heat from the memory chips on the base of the radiator.

The heat pipes are in contact with the heat sink fins and the base without the use of solder, but in general their fixation is reliable.

Now let's examine the efficiency of the cooling system SAPPHIRE DUAL-X. At maximum GPU load and the automatic control of fan speed the GPU was heated up to 74°C. Propellers were spinning at 45% (1790 rpm) of its maximum speed, and the noise did not stand out against other components.

After setting the rotation speed of the fan blades to the maximum (3340 rpm), the GPU temperature dropped to 65°C, and the noise rose above average, but it was still quite acceptable under prolonged use.

After the transition to the idle mode, the temperature of the graphics core and memory was reduced. This allowed the cooling system to go into a passive mode, thanks to technology Intelligent Fan Control II. GPU temperature did not exceed 45°C, and the card was operated in a completely silent mode.

Communication between the graphics processor and memory is realized through a 128-bit bus, which is capable of carrying 115.4 GB of information per second.

As you can see, Palit GeForce GTX 960 Super JetStream is significantly different from the standard version of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960. Firstly we would like to note the modified set of interfaces and factory overclocking of graphics core, which in nominal mode is clocked at 1279 MHz (increase of 13.5% compared to the recommended 1127 MHz), and taking into account the operation of technology NVIDIA GPU Boost 2.0 average is 1342 MHz (increase of 13.9% compared to reference 1178 MHz). Video memory is also overclocked and operates at effectively frequency of 7200 MHz instead of the standard 7010 MHz.

Total memory capacity of Palit GeForce GTX 960 Super JetStream is 2GB and it is realized by using 4 chips Samsung K4G41325FC-HC28 with capacity 4 GB each. According to the documentation, their nominal effective frequency is 7000 MHz, but in our case it was increased to 7200 MHz. Data exchange between the graphics processor and memory is realized via 128-bit bus, which is capable of flowing 115.2 GB of information per second.

Cooling system

In addition to the original design, the cooling system stands out due to quite large dimensions. The video card including installed cooling system occupies two and a half expansion slots and has a total length of 247 mm according to the official website of the company Palit (259 mm measured in our lab).

The cooler consists of a sufficiently large heatsink assembled from 35 aluminum nickel-plated plates, and two axial fans with blades 87 mm in diameter, mounted on the plastic housing. But the red pad on the case is made of aluminum instead of painted plastic, as it might seem at first glance.

The blades of Apistek GA92S2H have a special curved shape that allows them to generate a powerful airflow. However, they rotate in different directions, thereby reducing the possibility of conflict between the air flows and helps to further improve the efficiency of their work.

To improve the heat exchange efficiency there are three copper heat pipes with the diameter of 6 mm each. Unfortunately, they are not covered by a layer of nickel, which may adversely affect the efficiency of the cooler in the future.

In case of automatic speed control of the fan blades and under the maximum load, the graphics core is heated to 71°C, and cooler is quiet at 42% of its maximum capacity.

Under the maximum fan speed the GPU temperature dropped to 56°C. The noise rose to an average level, but it was quite comfortable for extended use.

As we already mentioned, the graphics core frequency was slightly increased on the recommendations of AMD and is 938 MHz.

The total capacity of memory is 2 GB, collected by using an 8-chip of company ELPIDA with capacity 256MB each. According to the marking (W2032BBBG-6A-F) and documentation of their nominal frequency is equal to 6 GHz, although in our case it was lowered to 5500 MHz. This allows us to hope for a good overclocking potential of use chips. Data exchange between the graphics core and memory is realized through a bus 256-bit, which is able to pass 176 GB of information per second.

Cooling system

According the name of the graphic adapter HIS R9 285 Mini IceQ X² OC, for cooling it uses proprietary cooler IceQ X². The total length of the graphics card of dual-slot cooling system is only 21 cm.

The cooler consists of a massive one-section of the radiator, which uses in the construction of 36 aluminum nickel-plated plates, two axial fans with impeller of diameter of 76 mm and a plastic casing that covers the entire structure above.

For a more uniform distribution of heat over the whole area of the radiator there are three copper heat pipes made with a diameter of 6 mm. Unfortunately, they are not covered by a layer of nickel, which is used to prevent oxidation process of copper in operation and the subsequent fall of the heat exchange efficiency. The copper base of the cooling system is in contact with GPU through a small layer of thermal paste.

Under automatic fan speed control in case of maximum load, graphics core was warmed up to 68 degrees and cooler worked with the 46% of its maximum capacity. Subjectively, the noise was below average.

After forced increase of the fan speed to the maximum level, the GPU temperature dropped to 59 degrees. The noise rose to an average level, but at the same time remained quite comfortable. By tradition, we note that a similar mode of cooling system will be claimed only in the case of manual overclocking.

We continue to test quite relevant previous generations of graphics cards using the new method. This time we look at a graphics accelerator based on the core AMD Turks (AMD Radeon HD 6670). It was presented several years ago, so it will be interesting to compare it with the current models in the joint testing.

The graphics card is equipped with 1GB of memory of standard GDDR5, collected using four chips ELPIDA W2032BBBG-50-F with 256 MB each. It is operated on the effective frequency 4000 MHz and communicates with the graphics chip through a 128-bit bus with a bandwidth of 64 GB/s.

Cooling system

Cooling System of HIS 6670 Fan 1GB GDDR5 occupies two slots for expansion cards. The total length of the video card with installed cooling system is 177 mm, and height is 112 mm (as measured in our lab). The entire structure is covered by a black plastic casing with the original design.

The blowing is realized by axial fan with blades of blue translucent plastic. Its diameter is 74 mm and the manufacturer is a famous company ARCTIC. Capacity of turntable is relatively small - 1.8 W (12 V, 0.15 A), but in this case, a higher rate is unlikely to be required, but the main emphasis is on the low level of generated noise.

Removal and heat dissipation is performed by a simple aluminum heatsink, which is in contact with the GPU through a thin layer of thermal paste.

Now let's examine the efficiency of the cooling system. Under automatic rotation speed of the fan blades (39% of the maximum) at maximum load, the GPU temperature did not exceed 50°C. Cooler operated very quietly and did not stand out compared to other computer components.

After installing the fan speed to maximum, the temperature dropped to 42°C. Even in this mode, the noise remained below average and was comfortable for long life.

In idle mode the core temperature dropped to 28°C, and the cooling system was virtually silent.

Tested modification of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 compares favorably not only due to proprietary cooling system, but the presence of factory overclocking of the GPU from the standard 1126 to 1228 MHz (mode «Gaming», which is selected by default). Given the technology NVIDIA GPU Boost 2.0 graphics core is clocked at 1291 MHz instead of recommended 1178 MHz. Also video memory subsystem, which operates at a frequency of 7200 MHz effective instead of the recommended 7010 MHz received acceleration.

Do note that the graphics card was tested by us in a more productive mode «OC», where the nominal and dynamic GPU frequency is 1253 MHz and 1317 MHz, respectively. It will be activated by the complete utility ASUS GPU Tweak by selecting a preset profile «O».
