Graphics card ASUS R7265-DC2-2GD5 base on AMD Radeon R7 265: review and testing

In February 2014 a new graphics card AMD Radeon R7 265 of family AMD Volcanic Islands was officially released. It is intended to take place between the AMD Radeon R7 260X and AMD Radeon R9 270 and compete for the attention of buyers with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti. Note that the recommended price (and competitor of NVIDIA company) is 150 U.S. dollars.

In fact, AMD Radeon R7 265 is well-known AMD Radeon HD 7850 with overclocked to 925 MHz graphics core, and increased level of TDP (from 130 to 150 W). Also the new product can boast with the support of API AMD Mantle.

Tested modification AMD Radeon R7 265 differs from the standard version due to the availability of original cooling system ASUS DirectCU II and quality circuitry. As for the printed circuit board and power supply subsystem, in this case AMD did not create the "reference" sample and allowed the partners to use their own experience in this field.

Graphics card ASUS R7265-DC2-2GD5 is shipped in the traditional for company ASUS cardboard box decorated with quality printing in a corporate style. In addition to the manufacturer and model, on the front side is the reference about the volume and type of video memory, as well as the presence of the supplied utility GPU Tweak. The main advantages are: a proprietary cooling system DirectCU II and improved circuitry made in accordance with the concept of Super Alloy Power. It includes:

  • solid capacitors with increased service life to 50,000 hours and increased endurance at high temperatures up to 20%;
  • chokes with ferrite core.

The above-described advantages make 15% increase in performance, reduced the temperature of power cells (on 35°C), and 2.5 increase in the service life of the graphic adapter.

Design and circuitry

The product is made on a relatively compact black PCB in with a matte cover. As you can see, the main principles of the location of key elements are pretty standard: the graphics core slightly shifted from the center of the PCB and surrounded by memory chips, while elements of the power subsystem are located on both side.

The power supply of tested graphics card is performed via octa-core scheme (six phases for the GPU and one for the memory chips and PLL). Circuitry is collected in accordance with the concept of Super Alloy Power and includes only high-quality components: solid capacitors and inductors with ferrite core which improves the stability and reliability of the graphics adapter and prolongs its service life.

The power subsystem of graphics core implemented on a digital PWM controller DIGI+VRM ASP1215AH details of which, unfortunately is no widely available.

In addition to slot PCI Express 3.0 x16, power feeding of adapter ASUS R7265-DC2-2GD5 is provided through one additional connector on the right side of the graphics card. In accordance with the recommendations of AMD 6-pin option is used.

To implement the AMD CrossFireX technology on ASUS R7265-DC2-2GD5 one connector for the corresponding bridge is used. This bridge allows to combine two video accelerator for joint calculation of graphical effects.

The base of the product is the graphics chip AMD Curacao produced according to 28 nm process. It consists of 1024 universal shader pipelines, 32 rasterization units and 64 texture units. Since ASUS Radeon R7 265 DirectCU II comes with a reference frequency formula, the graphics core can be dynamically accelerated to the recommended 925 MHz.

Total memory volume (2 GB) is collected using 8 ELPIDA W2032BBBG-6A-F chips with capacity 256MB each which run on the recommended by AMD company frequency 1400 MHz (effective value is 5600 MHz). Data exchange between the graphics core and memory is realized via 256-bit bus which is capable of information passing to 179.2 GB per second.

Cooling system

Accelerator with installed cooling system DirectCU II occupies two expansion slots and has a total length of 240 mm (according to measuring in our lab).

The cooler consists of a relatively small radiator, which has 37 aluminum plates and two 74 mm fans attached to the plastic case that covers the entire structure above.

For a uniform distribution of heat over the entire area of the radiator two copper heat pipes with diameter 8 mm are used. Note that the fins and the heat pipes are coated with a layer of nickel which is designed to reduce drop of efficiency of cooling system in the operation caused by the metal oxidation. A small layer of thermal paste is applied.

As you can see, the main cooling system using a special thermal interface contacts directly with two of the eight memory chips, while the other six and power elements of stabilization don’t have additional cooling.

Heat pipes are tightly placed on the radiator fins without the usage of the solder.

In automatic control fan speed at maximum load the graphics core was heated up to 69 degrees, and cooler operated with 56% of its maximum capacity. The noise level in this mode can be described as subjectively quiet.

After the forced increase of fan speed to the maximum level the GPU temperature dropped to 62 degrees. Generated noise can be described as “below average, comfortable for extended use”. We remind that such similar operation in everyday use is unlikely because the speed of the blades was increased to the maximum level of force solely to measure “margin of safety”.
