ASUS GeForce GTX 780 STRIX OC motherboard review and testing

Due to the increasing promotion of multi-monitor configurations, as well as displays with ultra-high resolution 4K Ultra HD, ASUS Company has made quite a logical step and presented an updated version of the graphics card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 with increased memory up to 6 GB.

Traditionally a novelty has received a number of additional proprietary features typical for modern "top" products of the Taiwanese company, namely the qualitative circuitry, cooler DirectCU II with technology 0dB FAN, improved power system, as well as factory overclocking for better performance.

ASUS GeForce GTX 780 STRIX OC has seemingly all the components of the "top" graphics card. The name ASUS STRIX comes from the Greek designations of the owl. This bird is an excellent hunter with arsenals of weapons: sharp vision, strong claws and noiseless movement. All this has inspired engineers to create ASUS graphics card, which would have high quality video display, quiet operation and excellent overclocking potential. In addition, the owl is a symbol of wisdom, which further suggests to users a good choice for purchasing models ASUS STRIX.

But let's take a closer look at all the features provided by new item.

As for the comparison with the reference version of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780, we have almost completely unique development of company ASUS, which in addition to the increased capacity of video memory has the original cooling system and the PCB, improved circuitry, as well as the presence of factory overclocking of graphics core 3 % with respect to the recommended 863 MHz. Dynamic GPU clock speed was also increased: from standard 902 to 941 MHz. The same is only the frequency of the video memory which operates at the recommended 1502/6008 MHz.

Graphics card ASUS STRIX-GTX780-OC-6GD5 is supplied in cardboard box decorated with quality printing in a corporate style. In addition to the manufacturer and model you can observe the reference about capacity and type of video memory, belonging to the lineup «OC» (factory overclocked graphics cards) and the presence of utility GPU Tweak. The main advantages are: a proprietary cooling technology DirectCU II with technology 0dB FAN, 10-phase digital power subsystem DIGI + VRM and improved circuitry made in accordance with the concept of Super Alloy Power. It includes:

  • solid capacitors with increased service life;
  • chokes with ferrite core;
  • tantalum-polymer capacitors POSCAP which have a high level of stability and efficiency even during operation in mode of extreme overclocking.

As for everyday use, the advantages described above allow on 15% increase the energy efficiency, on 30% reduce the noise of power components and 2.5 increase the service life of the graphic adapter

List of system requirements is on one side of the box. Based on the recommendations, the power supply unit in such system must have a capacity of at least 600 W and provide at least 38 A on the +12 V line. As for the additional power connectors, the tested model requires the connection of two PCIe cables: one 8-pin and one 6-pin.

To output images the product has quite standard set of interfaces:

Design and circuitry

Graphics card is made on the original PCB which has a special carry-over of area with connectors for bridges NVIDIA SLI. Despite the distinctive design of the board, the arrangement of key elements is quite standard. Twelve video memory chips are soldered around the graphics core, while the power subsystem components are on the right side of it.

The power subsystem is performed according to 10-phase scheme (8 phases for GPU and 2 for memory chips). At the same time the reference version includes only eight phases (6+2 scheme). As for the circuitry, it corresponds to concept Super Alloy Power which includes only high quality components: solid capacitors, chokes with ferrite core and tantalum-polymer capacitors POSCAP. This feature will affect on overclocking potential and stability of operation.

The power core subsystem is based on a digital PWM controller DIGI+ VRM ASP1212 of International Rectifier company production which supports active control of eight phases,  as well as has several protective technologies: OVP (overvoltage protection), UVP (under voltage protection), OCP (over current protection) and OTP (temperature protection).

In addition to PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot power supply of the product is provided via two additional connectors located on one side of the graphics card. In accordance with reference design one of them is 6-pin and the second reinforced 8-pin. Despite the thought-out arrangement of such connectors the cooler complicates the connection/disconnection of power cables.

To realize NVIDIA SLI technology for ASUS GeForce GTX 780 STRIX OC two connectors for bridges are used. They allow to combine from two to four graphics accelerators for the joint calculation of graphic effects.

The reverse side of the PCB protected by a massive support plate has the previously mentioned tantalum-polymer solid capacitors POSCAP and some other electrical components.

The base of the product is graphics chip NVIDIA GK110 (Kepler). It is produced according 28-nm technical process and includes 12 active SMX-clusters, 2304 shader processors (CUDA cores), 32 rasterization blocks and 192 texture blocks. As we have already mentioned GPU frequency in nominal mode was increased up from 863 to 889 MHz. Taking into account the support of NVIDIA GPU Boost 2.0 the frequency of GPU was 941MHz instead of declared 902MHz.

Memory of ASUS GeForce GTX 780 STRIX OC with capacity 6GB is collected by 12 chips with capacity 512 MB (4 GB) each manufactured by SK Hynix. Microchips are marked as H5GC4H24MFR-T2C. According to the documentation their nominal frequency is 6 GHz. Data exchange between the graphics core and memory is realized through a 384-bit bus which can carry 288.4 GB of information per second.

Cooling system

Graphics card with installed cooling system DirectCU II occupies two expansion slots and has total length of 287 mm according to the official website ASUS (302 mm according measuring in our lab).

The cooler consists of a massive radiator with 53 aluminum plates, two 95-mm fans with support for 0dB FAN and the metal casing that covers the entire structure.

For a uniform heat distribution over the entire area of the radiator there are five copper heat pipes of different diameters: two 6 mm, two 8-mm and one 10-mm. Note that the fins and the heat pipes are coated with a layer of nickel, which is designed to reduce drop of efficiency caused by the metal oxidation. Standard small layer of thermal paste is applied.

To improve the efficiency of heat transfer the heat pipes are soldered to the edges of the aluminum radiator.

Since the primary cooling system does not directly contact with neither power elements of stabilization module power nor memory chips, a low profile radiator with thermal interface on the back side is applied. And memory chips devoid of any additional cooling.

Additionally, there is a stiffening rib which supports the cooling system by reducing the load on the graphics adapter of printed circuit board.

Another important design element is stiffness plate mounted on the back of the accelerator. It performs two functions. First of all, it supports massive cooling system, removing a significant portion of the load from the PCB. Secondly, it is a kind of radiator which takes an active part in the removal of heat despite the absence of thermal interface. During testing it was heated too much so you should be careful when removing the card after turning off the PC.

During automatic speed control of fan rotation in a mode of maximum load the graphic processor was heated up to 70°С. Cooler operation capacity was 48% from its maximal speed. The noise level was quiet and did not provide much discomfort at durable usage.

In the mode of maximum rotation speed the GPU temperature was reduced to 59 degrees. The noise can be characterized as above-average.

During the absence of load the frequency of GPU and memory is automatically decreased. This allows to reduce energy consumption and heat release. In this mode GPU temperature didn’t exceed 50°C and noise level was very low.  

As a result the cooling system ASUS GeForce GTX 780 STRIX OC has demonstrated not only sufficient cooling but at the same times a comfort noise level even at maximum rotation frequency of the blades.
