GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 980 G1 GAMING (GV-N980G1 GAMING-4GD) graphics card: review and testing

This year NVIDIA company has really surprised by demonstrating the capabilities of the new microarchitecture NVIDIA Maxwell. And it's no matter of the highest levels of performance but the outstanding energy efficiency, which previously was not available to graphics accelerators of higher price range. Most users before creating a gaming computer always had to choose between fast flagship graphics cards, which were often noisy and consume a lot of electricity, and less productive solutions that showed more energy efficient and quiet cooling system.

The hero of this review, GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 980 G1 GAMING combines the best capabilities of the two above categories, while possessing a great cooling system which even exceeds the capabilities of the standard model of the cooler.

The specifications shows that of the graphics card GIGABYTE have a significant advantage compared to the reference sample due to the factory overclocking: the nominal frequency of the graphics core is more by 102 MHz, and dynamic by 113 MHz.

Graphics accelerator is shipped in carton box is decorated predominantly in black. Its front side has the logo of manufacturer and a series of graphics cards GIGABYTE G1 GAMING. Below there is a mark «GIGABYTE Super OverSlock" which implies a pre-selection of only those graphics processors which have the highest quality and have the best overclocking potential (process GIGABYTE GPU Gauntlet).

The reverse side of the box contains a detailed description of the key technologies and capabilities of the graphics card. The main part of the description is taken by advantages of proprietary cooling system WINDFORCE 3X 600W. In particular they include fans of the original blade shape that reduces air-flow and increase the efficiency of the blow-off.

Radiator of this cooling system has a special form (Triangle Cool) which contributes to the smooth flow of air streamlining its edges for faster cooling. In addition there is a large base plate on the back side of the PCB, which protects the components soldered on the PCB from damage and also takes part in their cooling.

Technology GIGABYTE Flex Display is responsible for the automatic detection of up to four displays connected to the interface board, and allows you to create a comfortable working or gaming multimonitor configuration in fully automatic mode.  

Also separately is noted a support of technology GIGABYTE DualBIOS: backup BIOS chip allows to recover the efficiency after an unsuccessful overclocking. Another indicated mark is compliance GIGABYTE GV-N980G1 GAMING-4GD with the original concept Ultra Durable VGA, which involves the use the increased amount of copper in some layers of high-quality Japanese solid capacitors, ferrite cores and field-effect transistors with low on-resistance.

At the bottom of the package are the minimum requirements for the power supply. It is stated that it should have two 8-pin PCIe connectors and at least of 600 W.

Inside the box the graphics accelerator is placed in a special foam shape and anti-static bag that provides a good protection of fragile electronic components during transport.

For testing we have a pre-sale version of the graphics card GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 980 G1 GAMING. The set of delivery incdules only two power adapters. The final version of the same graphic accelerator will have a brief installation guide, CD with software and drivers, as well as the adapter DVI↔D-Sub.

To connect monitors or TVs on the interface panel is the following set of connectors:

  • 1 x DVI-D;
  • 1 x DVI-I;
  • 3 x DisplayPort;
  • 1 x HDMI.

As mentioned above, this configuration allows the simultaneous connection of up to four displays. DVI-I connector is used to display an analog monitor with built-in D-Sub using the appropriate adapter.

Design and circuitry

Model GIGABYTE GV-N980G1 GAMING-4GD is performed on a fairly overall PCB of black color. At that center is the graphics chip, which is equipped with a protective frame (it can prevent the crystal from chipping when removing and installing the cooling system).

Accelerator is equipped with enhanced power system: four phases with a doubling are designed to power the graphics core, and two more for the memory chips. Recall that the standard analogue uses a five-phase scheme (four phases for the GPU and one for the memory chips). Thus, the enhanced power system should promote more stable operation at higher clock speeds.

An equally important advantage is a high-quality circuitry the components of which significantly increase the reliability of the entire system under load. They include solid capacitors, field-effect transistors with low on-resistance and ferrite chokes.

This subsystem operates under control of a digital PWM controller ON Semiconductor NCP81174 which is located on the reverse side of the PCB. Its advantages include support of power-saving features and protection against overcurrent.

Power is supplied via a slot PCI Express 3.0 x16 and two additional 8-pin connectors PCIe. Recall that the standard version has two additional 6-pin connectors PCIe. Such discrepancy in the configuration is caused by the enhanced power system, as well as a substantial factory overclocking. All this has led to the increased power consumption. Connection and disconnection of connectors is not precluded, since in order to facilitate this procedure there are special grooves in the PCB and the metal cover plate.

Two connectors for NVIDIA SLI bridges allow you to combine up to four graphics cards to share calculation of graphics. It should be considered that the motherboard should also have four slots PCI Express 3.0 x16 to reveal the full potential of this configuration.

They operate on the effective frequency of 7000 MHz, which fully corresponds to the reference index. The graphics card is equipped with a proprietary cooling system WINDFORCE 3X 600W, which takes two slots for expansion cards. The total length of the graphics accelerator with fixedc ooling system is 310 mm (as measured in our lab). Therefore, before purchasing this graphics accelerator it is necessary to check whether it is compatible with your computer's casing.

The aluminum frame is equipped with three fans Power Logic PLD08010S12HH, which are designed to remove hot air from the radiator. They have a diameter of 76 mm and the original shape of the blades, which can increase the efficiency of the blowing.

The heat from the graphics chip is removed by a large copper plate, which through the special thermo-pads contacts with the memory chips. The basis of the radiator is in contact with the elements of the power subsystem, which is certainly a positive factor.

Also there are six copper heat pipes, five of which have a diameter of 8 mm and one 6 mm. They are not coated with a layer of nickel, and hence undergo to oxidation during use.

Heatpipes are firmly soldered to the copper base as well as to the heatsink fins, which should improve the contact and increase the efficiency of the cooling system operation. Another interesting point is that the cooling fins are fastened by means of two long screws. In addition to interesting design, this structure improves the reliability of the entire cooling system assembly as a whole.

On the reverse side of the printed circuit board is mounted an aluminum plate, which, though doesn not in contact with the elements on the PCB, but is significant heated during operation, thus participating in the process of heat dissipation.

In automatic mode of fan speed control, at maximum load, the graphics chip was heated only up to 54°C. This figure is excellent for the top-end graphics accelerator. Cooler operated at 47% (1919 rpm) of its maximum capacity. The level of noise was on a subjective level of "below average". It was comfortable for extended use of the PC. Also worth noting is that at the maximum load the dynamic GPU frequency was higher than the declared parameter in 1329 MHz, 1367 MHz.

After forced rotation cooler fans to the maximum, the core temperature was decreased to quite an amazing value 44°C. Although the noise level was higher than the average level and became uncomfortable, but this mode was perfect for overclocking experiments even without replacement of cooling system to more productive.

In idle mode the graphics core frequency was automatically reduced to 135 MHz, and the temperature did not exceed 33°C. Noise level at the same time was almost indistinguishable from the background of other system components.

In general, the cooling system of the video card GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 980 G1 GAMING perfectly has demonstrated good capabilities. When compared to the graphics accelerator of upper price range of the previous generation (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780), equipped with a similar cooling system, the result will be just perfect. In automatic mode, the core temperature was by 25°C lower (54°C versus 79°C), which is a great achievement of the specialists NVIDIA.
