HIS R7 260Х iCooler with 1GB GDDR5 graphics card review and testing

This article is devoted to the graphics card of HIS Company which is specialized in the production of graphics accelerators exclusively based on AMD production. The hero of our review HIS R7 260H iCooler model is a modification of AMD Radeon R7 260H with 1GB memory capacity. It stands out from the competition by original cooling system, pleasant design and qualitative circuitry.  However its main advantage of course is the fact that it is one of the most affordable versions among the aforementioned graphics accelerator. At the time of reviewing HIS R7 260H iCooler is offered on average $ 130 USD.

As we can see for testing we have modification of AMD Radeon R7 260X with reduced GPU frequency to 1000 MHz (for reference 2-GB version it is 1100 MHz). As for the video memory, 1 GB of GDDR5 runs at effective frequency of 6000 MHz, although the “reference” rate of 2-GB analog is 6400 MHz. The use of such frequency formula for 1-GB of AMD Radeon R7 260X is a fairly common idea of the producers.

The product is shipped in a small vertically aligned box decorated with bright and high-quality printing. In addition to references about capacity and type of video memory, on the front side there is a note about the application of iCooler and the internal interface PCI Express 3.0, as well as the information about the support of video output in ultra-high resolution of 4096 x 2160 pixels (4K Ultra HD).

On the reverse side of the box there is a list of supported API and technologies as well as system requirements. Based on the recommendations the power supply unit should have a capacity at least 500 W and one 6-pin PCIe cable.

HIS R7 260X iCooler Graphics card is performed on a compact printed circuit board (PCB) of blue color with reference design. The usual arrangement scheme is used: all memory chips are soldered on the front side around graphics core. As for power subsystem, behind interface panel you’ll find GPU power joint, while graphics card chip elements are on the right side.

The power supply id performed via 5 phase scheme (3 phases for GPU and one by one for PLL and memory chips).

Core power subsystem is implemented on a digital PWM controller uP1643P that supports the management of 5 phases and provides protection against overstrain. Graphics card circuitry includes only reliable solid capacitors.

In accordance with the recommendations of AMD Company power supply is provided via PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot and one additional 6-pin connector on the back of the card. At that close arrangement to the cooler case makes difficulties to disconnect the power cable.

To implement the AMD CrossFireX technology HIS R7 260X iCooler model has a connector to set an appropriate bridge which allows you to combine two cards for the joint calculation of graphical effects.

Since all chips of video memory are on the front side of HIS H260XF1GD the reverse side has previously mentioned PWM controller, as well as the mounting screws of the cooling system.

The basis of the card is a graphics chip AMD Bonaire produced according 28 nm process. It consists of 2080 million transistors placed on 160mm2. It is not a secret that graphics adaptor AMD Radeon R7 260X is an analogue of AMD Radeon HD 7790. In this case its frequency is 1000MHz. Total memory capacity (1GB) is collected by 4 chips SK hynix (256MB each). According to the marking (H5GQ2H24AFR-T2C) and documentation its nominal frequency is 5 GHz but in our case it was increased to 6000MHz. Data exchange between the graphics core and memory is realized via 128-bit bus which has capability of information passing 96.0 GB per second.

Cooling system

According to the name of graphics adaptor the proprietary iCooler is used. Total length of video accelerator with installed cooling system that takes two expansion slots is 226mm.

The cooler consists of a copper base, whole radiator and one fan with blade diameter of 76 mm. The structure has plastic housing.

Elements of power system graphics core are cooled by a small cooler with thermal interface on the back side.

In automatic control of fan speed at maximum load the graphics core was warmed up to 67° and cooler (as indicated by the monitoring) operated with 29% of its maximum capacity. The noise level can be described as “medium”. However, it was quite comfortable for continuous operation near the PC.

After the forced increase of fan speed to the maximum level, the GPU temperature was 60°. Generated noise level can be characterized as “above medium” and quite uncomfortable for long period of usage.

In case of load absence the operating frequency of the graphics core and memory automatically fell down. In this mode the GPU temperature did not exceed 38° and the noise level was fairly quiet.
