HIS R9 285 IceQ X2 OC (H285QMB2GD) graphics card: review and testing

This review will be devoted to the modification of the recently announced graphics cards AMD Radeon R9 285, which was replaced by AMD Radeon R9 280. The tested product was produced by the company HIS, which is focused solely on graphics accelerators AMD.

The graphics card HIS R9 285 IceQ X² OC 2GB GDDR5 PCI-E DLDVI-I+DLDVI-D/DP/HDMI, which for convenience will be named as HIS R9 285 IceQ X² OC or HIS H285QMB2GD and compares not only original cooler IceQ X² but also by the presence of factory overclocking, qualitative circuitry, as well as a number of other improvements. Do note that at the time of reviewing the graphics card HIS R9 285 IceQ X² OC is one of the most affordable versions of AMD Radeon R9 285 on the market, together with the advantages described above makes it potentially very profitable purchase. Tested modification AMD Radeon R9 285 compares favorably with the presence of GPU factory overclocking from standard 918 to 938 MHz. But the video memory subsystem fully complies with the requirements of the reference: 2 GB GDDR5 256-bit bus and the effective frequency 5500 MHz.

The novelty is shipped in a small vertically oriented box, decorated in corporate style with light blue tones. In addition to the references to the capacity and type of video memory, the front side specifies the use of cooler IceQ X² and the presence of the supplied software to control the operation of the graphics card (HIS iTurbo). Also here is mention about support of factory overclocking of the GPU. Also draw your attention to the use of internal interface PCI Express 3.0 and support for video output in an ultra-high resolution of 4096 x 2160 pixels (4K Ultra HD).

For the production of HIS H285QMB2GD original black circuit board was used. All elements are arranged quite standard: the GPU power subsystem is to on the left side, while the components of the video memory power subsystem are on the right. As we mentioned, the circuitry includes extremely reliable solid-state capacitors, which should positively affect the useful life of new item.

As you can see, the usual connectors for bridges AMD CrossFireX are not available, since the novelty supports this technology through communication of graphics cards through slots PCI Express x16.

Power supplying of the model HIS R9 285 IceQ X² OC is performed at quite familiar 7-phase scheme, where five phases are reserved for the needs of graphic core, and two for the memory chip.

The power subsystem is implemented on the digital PWM controller ON NCP81022, located on the front side of the PCB.

In addition to slot PCI Express 3.0 x16 the power supplying is provided through two additional connectors PCIe, placed on the side of the graphics card. In accordance with the recommendations of AMD, both are 6-pin. Do note that due to the close proximity of the connectors to the cooling system, the connection and disconnection of cables PCIe is slightly more difficult.

The reverse side is notable for the presence of fastening screws of the cooling system and a variety of electrical components. Also note that the cooling system significantly projecting beyond the printed circuit board.

Total capacity of memory is of 2 GB and it collected using 8 chips of a company ELPIDA with capacity 256MB each. According to the marking (W2032BBBG-6A-F) and documentation their nominal frequency is equal to 6 GHz, although in our case it was lowered to 5500 MHz. This allows us to hope for a good overclocking potential. Data exchange between the graphics core and memory is realized through a 256-bit bus, which is able to pass 176 GB of information per second.

Cooling system

According to the title of the graphics adapter, a proprietary cooler IceQ X² is used for cooling. The total length of the graphics card with installed cooling system which occupies two expansion slots is 280 mm (measured in our lab).

The cooler consists of a massive radiator and includes 42 nickel-plated aluminum plates, two fans with impeller diameter of 86 mm and a plastic casing that covers the entire structure.

As for the fans, in this case there are two fans FirstDO with marking «FD7010H12D». The performance rated voltage is 12 V and the current strength is 0.35 A, which results in a power of 4.2 W. A special mention is given to the original form of the blade, which contributes to the generation of more powerful airflow.

Five copper heat pipes with diameter of 6 mm are applied for a more uniform distribution of heat over the whole area of the radiator. They are covered with a layer of nickel, which serves to prevent oxidation of copper during operation and the subsequent fall of heat exchange effectiveness.

Copper base of the cooling system is in contact with GPU through a small layer of thermal paste. In order to improve the efficiency of the cooler the contact of heat pipes with fins and big copper base (60 x 62 mm) is improved by using solder.

In order to cool the FETs is used a separate small radiator with thermal interface on the back side.

Under automatic fan speed control, the maximum load, graphics core was warmed up to 56 degrees and cooler was working with the 37% of its maximum capacity. Subjectively the noise was below average. It was absolutely comfortable for continuous operation near the PC.

After forced increase the fan speed to the maximum level, the GPU temperature dropped to 49 degrees. Created noise exceeded the average level and become uncomfortable for prolonged use. By tradition note that a similar mode of cooling system will be claimed only in the case of manual overclocking, so in everyday use you won’t have a high level of noise.
