Graphics card MSI GeForce GT 730 (N730K-1GD5LP/OC) based on NVIDIA GeForce GT 730: review and testing

Announced earlier low-profile graphics card NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 has been designed specifically to build budget office or home systems, compact multimedia computer or HTPC. As we know, NVIDIA has introduced three versions of the graphics accelerator that significantly differ in specifications. Rate this aspect is possible from the following table:

As you can see, the new model range includes two options of the graphics card, built on the graphics processor NVIDIA GK208, which was completed earlier by accelerator NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 modifications of 2013. One of them is equipped with memory DDR3 with an effective clock speed of 1800 MHz, and the second with a more productive GDDR5 with effective frequency of 5000 MHz. 

The third version of the NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 graphics processor is built on the NVIDIA GF108 and, in fact is an updated modification of the NVIDIA GeForce GT 630. It has a relatively low number of unified shader processors (96), but it can boast of a bigger memory bus (128-bit). Due to obsolete micro architeture and technology its energy consumption is at the highest level among the three of these modifications. It can be up to 49 W in the standard version.

This material will be devoted to the graphics card MSI GeForce GT 730 (N730K-1GD5LP/OC), which is equipped with 1 GB of GDDR5 memory and is the most productive version of the above modifications of graphics accelerators. Furthermore, it has factory overclocking which should further enhance the final speed.

According to the table of specifications, the nominal frequency of the graphics core was increased from 902 MHz to 1006 MHz, which should provide some performance gain. Also note the use of not the most modern interface PCI Express 2.0 x16 for the exchange of data with other components of the computer. However, do specify few moments. Firstly, the bandwidth of PCI Exrpess 2.0 in this case it is sufficient to transmit data, so the use of PCI Express 3.0 would not lead to a noticeable increase in the level of performance. Secondly, users can safely install it in slot PCI Express 3.0 and get no conflicts.

The graphics card is sold in large and bright packaging made of cardboard. On the front part you can find the logo of the manufacturer, as well as the complex mechanism which symbolizes corporate tool for overclocking and monitoring MSI Afterburner. Also here there is a mark that the graphics accelerator is made in a low-profile design and the kit includes the set of adapters to install it in a compact body HTPC.

On the reverse side of the box you can see the more detailed description of the graphics card. Here there is a summary of the supported technologies and API. In addition to conventional brief installation instructions and disk with software and drivers, the set of delivery includes two removable plugs for the interface board which we have already mentioned above. They allow you to put the connector D-Sub in the adjacent slot or turn it off if the connection of an analog monitor is not required.

To display the picture the following set of interfaces is provided:

Such a set of connectors allows without any problems connected either a digital monitor or TV (DVI-D, HDMI), or an analog monitor (D-Sub). In general, such scheme is the most versatile for the budget model. It supports the following resolutions:

MSI GeForce GT 730 id performed on a compact circuit board with height of 70 mm and the length 160 mm. It is a black PCB, and around the GPU are plastic frame which protects it against possible damage during assembly or disassembly of the cooling system.

GPU's power is provided according two-phase scheme: one phases for the GPU and one for the memory chips. High-quality solid capacitors with longer life and the ability to operate at higher temperatures are used.

The graphics card is not equipped with connectors for additional power, because its maximum power does not exceed 49 W and a standard PCI Express x16 slot can provide up to 75 W.

Also there is no connector for bridge NVIDIA SLI, which allows you to combine several graphics cards in a single game configuration. This is due to the fact that the graphics adapter hasn’t the support for this technology.

MSI N730K-1GD5LP/OC is based on the graphics chip NVIDIA GK208-400-A1, which is made according 28-nm technology process based on micro-NVIDIA Kepler. Its miniature size can be seen in the above picture. This GPU consists of 384 unified shader pipelines, 32 texture units and 8 ROP units. In nominal mode it operates at a frequency of 1006 MHz, which in idle mode goes down to 405 MHz.

The graphics card is equipped with 1 GB of memory GDDR5 collected by using four chips SK Hynix H5GC2H24BFR with capacity of 256MB each. They operate on the effective frequency of 5000 MHz and communicate with the GPU on a 64-bit bus with a speed of 40.1 GB/s.

The plastic housing which also directs the air flow, has a small fan Ong Hua HA5010H12C-Z (12 V, 0.13 A) with a diameter of 50 mm blades. This structure is designed in such a way that most of the air is removed outside of the body (if you remove one extra plug on the interface board), thereby increasing the temperature of the other components inside the system unit.

For heat removal and dissipation is used small aluminum heatsink with longitudinal ribs. It is in contact with the graphics chip via a thin layer of thermal paste and has bright blue color. It should be noted that the elements of the power subsystem and memory chips have no any additional cooling, which is typical of most budget cooling systems.

To monitor the performance during tests we used the program MSI Afterburner 4.0.0. During automatic control of fan blades speed, in the maximum load the graphics core was heated up to 47°C. Cooler operation was 39% of its maximum capacity, which corresponds to 3200 rpm. The noise level of cooling system in this mode was low. There was a little background, but it is not much stands out from the other system components.

After increasing the fan speed to 100% (5600 rpm), the noise level was "above average" and was uncomfortable for prolonged use. The temperature of the GPU at the same time dropped to 42°C.

After the transition to the idle mode the speed of the GPU was automatically reduced and its temperature was dropped to 30°C. The cooler rotation was absolutely noiseless. The speed was 750 rpm.
