Palit GeForce GTX 970 JetStream graphics card: review and testing

Continuing familiarity with the various modifications of recently announced NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970, with the main characteristics and features which can be found in the review of GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 970 G1.Gaming, as well as in a separate article devoted to micro NVIDIA Maxwell, we will talk about the new product from the company Palit, namely the Palit GeForce GTX 970 JetStream. It has a good level of factory overclocking, qualitative circuitry, as well as proprietary cooler.  

But first things first, and for the beginning we suggest you to look at the detailed performance characteristics of the testing graphics card.

As you can see, Palit GeForce GTX 970 JetStream is significantly different from the standard version of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970. This modification has proprietary cooling system, a modified set of video outputs, as well as the original PCB. Additionally we note factory overclocking of graphics core, which in nominal mode operates at a frequency of 1152 MHz (an increase of 9.7% compared to recommended 1050 MHz), and with the technology NVIDIA GPU Boost 2.0 average value is 1304 MHz. Video memory is operated at the recommended effective frequency of 7012 MHz.

  • Optimized Air Flow - the cooling system propellers rotate in different directions, thus reducing the potential for conflict between the air flow and increase the effectiveness of removal of excess heat.
  • LED Lightning - fans are equipped with a blue LED backlit, providing original appearance in the process.
  • DrMOS - power circuits of graphics chip and memory chips uses high-quality chips DrMOS, which are less heated and the lack of the possibility of spurious noise in the form of high-frequency squeaking during operation.
  • 0-dB TECH - thanks to this technology the cooling fans are activated only after heating the GPU to 60 degrees, which makes the vgraphics card completely silent in idle and low load.
  • ThunderMaster - supplied proprietary software will allow you to not only to monitor in real-time the state of graphics card, but if necessary to boot it by simply pressing a button.

Design and circuitry

For the production of Palit GeForce GTX 970 JetStream was used the original circuit board of dark brown color. It differs from the standard model not only by more compact dimensions, but by the location of on-board elements. Also, we note again the use of solid capacitors and chips DrMOS, which should have a positive impact on the overclocking potential, stability and reliability of the new item.

Power supplying of Palit NE5X970H14G2-2041J is performed according six-phase scheme (four phases for the GPU and two for memory chips), while the standard version includes only five phases (one less in power circuit of graphics card).

The power subsystem of core is implemented on a digital PWM controller NCP81174 manufactured by company ON Semiconductor. According to the documentation it is equipped with short-circuit protection and is characterized by increased efficiency by supporting the power saving function (PSI).

In addition to slot PCI Express 3.0 x16 graphics adapter power supply is provided via two additional connectors located on the top edge of the board. Similar to the standard version, both connectors are 6-pin. Separately we note that the cooler makes difficult to disconnect cables PCIe.

The basis of the test model is the graphics chip NVIDIA GM204-200-A1 (Maxwell), produced by 28-nm technology process. It includes 1664 unified shader pipelines (CUDA cores in the terminology of NVIDIA), 64 Rops and 104 texture units. As we have said, the graphics card is distinguished by the factory overclocking of the graphics core with clock rate of 1152 and 1304 MHz for the nominal and dynamic modes respectively.

Memory of card Palit NE5X970H14G2-2041J with total capacity of 4GB is collected with the help of 8 chips Samsung K4G41325FC-HC28 with capacity 512MB each. According to the documentation their effective frequency is 7 GHz. Exchange of data between the graphics processor and memory is realized via 256-bit bus, which can carry of 224.4 GB of information per second.

 Cooling System

In addition to the original design, the cooling system stands by quite large dimensions. Graphics card with installed cooling system occupies two and a half expansion slots and has a total length of 247 mm according to the official site of Palit (260 mm as measured in our lab).

Directly the cooler consists of a sufficiently large heatsink with 35 plated aluminum plates and two fans with blade diameter of 88 mm, mounted on the plastic housing. Do note that the golden plate on the housing is made from aluminum.

Recall that the blades of fans Apistek GA92S2H have a special curved shape that allows them to generate more powerful airflow. At the same time they rotate in different directions, that according to the manufacturer reduce the potential for conflict between the air flows and helps to improve the efficiency of their work.

To improve the efficiency of heat transfer three copper heat pipes with a diameter of 6 mm each are applied. Unfortunately, they are not covered by a layer of nickel, which may have negative effect to the efficiency of the cooler in the future.

At the same time the contact of heat pipes with radiator fins and copper base is improved by soldering on one side and the hot-melt glue on the other. However, the quality of the application of soldering is not very high.

To cool the chips DrMOS a separate low-profile heatsink is used.

During automatic speed control of the fan blades, in the maximum load mode, the graphics core was warmed up to 68 degrees, and cooler operated virtually silent at 30% of its maximum capacity.

Under the maximum fan speed GPU temperature was reduced to 20 degrees. The noise can be described as "above average", and it was not very comfortable for extended use.

In case of the absence of load the frequency of the graphics core and memory are automatically reduced, resulting in less power consumption and heat dissipation. In this mode the cooler is silent, as fans do not rotate due to the use of technology 0-db TECH.
