XFX  Radeon R9 290 DOUBLE DISSIPATION graphics card review

This review is devoted to a new modification of AMD Radeon R9 290 graphics card designed by XFX Company. The key feature of XFX Radeon R9 290 DOUBLE DISSIPATION (R9-290A-EDFD) is company strict design.

We are going to learn the features of cooling system, its content, overclocking potential and compare productivity with direct competitors.

At first sight to product package its futuristic design is the first thing you’ll notice. The surface has pleasant matt coating and colors and fonts are perfectly matched.

The front side contains information about free download of Battlefield 4 game. Also there is a list of key advantages:

  • UEFI BIOS support;
  • The usage of cooler with dual fans DOUBLE DISSIPATION;
  • Unlocked voltage for graphic processor;

AMD Power Tune 2.0 performance optimization;

The features listed on reverse side include: DirectX 11.2 and OpenGL 4.3support, integration technology of several graphic accelerators AMD CrossFireX, 4K Ultra HD video play as well.

On the one of side the minimal system requirements are listed: the capacity of power supply unit at least is 750 W, it should include one 6-pin and one 8-pin PCIe connector. Here we would like to note that XFX Company plays safe, as real power consumption of the card is well lower. But the producers of low-cost power supplies specify incorrect output capacity as well as the different components can be selected for the product. That is why the producer inflated the requirements to PSU. The actual consumption of this model you can see on the last graph of our testing.

Set of XFX Radeon R9 290 DOUBLE DISSIPATION delivery includes:

Due to the fact that all sockets of front panel are digital, there is no need in adapter for analogue interface D-Sub. The same situation is for bridges for AMD CrossFireX as it is realized on program level and combines up to 4 graphics accelerators.

Design and circuitry

XFX R9-290A-EDFD graphic accelerator is performed on black textolite. The arrangement of all functional elements including power components, memory chips and additional sockets is in accordance with standard design. The height of circuit board is 112mm.

Power supply subsystem is classical, time-tested seven-phase scheme which is used for standard types of AMD Radeon R9 290X and AMD Radeon HD 7970. Five phases are used power supply of graphics processor, one for memory chip and one for PLL.  

The real advantages of XFX Radeon R9 290 DOUBLE DISSIPATION are the presence of high-quality components: solid state capacitors and chokes with ferrite cores.

International Rectifier 3567B chip is used as controller. It has an ability of automatic switching of active phase as well as specific modes “Overclocking” and “Gaming”.

In addition to PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot two additional connectors: 6-pin and 8-pin are used to feed the graphic accelerator. The connection of sockets is easy but the disconnection is little difficult due to close layout of cooling system.

Top part of the board has a small switch providing the switching of card modes. In our case the tumbler repositioning didn’t give any result. Maybe this function will be used after the release of updated BIOS version for graphic accelerator.

The reverse side contains several elements of power supply subsystem, fix screws for cooling system as well. Note that two of them have special stickers informing about warranty loss in case of opening.

The base of XFX Radeon R9 290 DOUBLE DISSIPATION is graphic chip AMD Radeon R9 290 which is identified by GPU-Z 0.7.7 utility as “Hawaii”. It is produced according 28-nm technical process and includes 2560 unique shader processors, 64 rasterization blocks and 160 texture blocks. Graphic processor frequency can dynamically vary depending on GPU load and temperature taking an index 947 MHz.

Graphics card XFX R9-290A-EDFD memory is collected by 16 chips ELPIDA W2032BBBG-6A-F with capacity 256MB each. Thus the total capacity is 4 GB. Its nominal effective frequency is 6GHz but in our case it was decreased up to 5GHz due to the complete correspondence with standard formula. Data exchange between memory and graphic processor is carried via 512 bit bus with carrying capacity 320GB/s.

Cooling system

Present graphics card is equipped with proprietary cooling system DOUBLE DISSIPATION that takes two slots for expansion cards. One of the basic advantage is stylish design providing harmonious and elegant appearance. Total length of graphics accelerator is 295mm.

On side faces of protective housing you will find small vents. They are used to blow hot air out of computer case. This feature should be taken into account during blow-off using system fans.

After dismantling of decorative elements of the construction, key components can be learnt. The first is two fans fixed on special frame. The producer had used FirstDO FD7010H12S fans with 85mm diameter and dust protection level IP-5X.

To pick up the heat, a special copper area that contacts with graphics processor via heat-conducting paste is used. Heat removal function is carried out by seven copper 6mm dia thermal tubes.

They are soldered to copper base and cooler edges that provide cooling effect. But they are not covered with nickel layer that may negatively influence on heat exchange performance due to effect of corrosion processes.

To cool memory chips and power supply elements, big aluminum black cooling plate is used. The contact between these elements is provided via special thermal gaskets.

During automatic speed control of fan rotation, in a mode of maximum load the graphic processor was heated up to 79°С. Cooler operation capacity was 84% from its maximal speed (3016rpm). The noise level was medium and did not provide discomfort at durable usage.

After forced rotation speed enhancing up to 100% (3030rpm) noise level was almost the same, as well as temperature of graphics chip. Thus the activation of maximum rotation speed won’t make a discomfort during work and this is an important moment of such high productive adaptor operation.

During idle mode GPU operation was automatically reduced to 300MHz. In this condition its temperature didn’t exceed 41°С and noise of fan operation was invisible on the background of other components work.  

On the whole we can say that this cooling system well coped with tasks and demonstrated not only good productivity but also moderate noise level.
