Scythe Mugen 4 (SCMG-4000) CPU cooler: review and testing

The hero of this review is not new, but still relevant solution from the Japanese company Scythe. The range of the manufacturer includes not only the components that are directly related to the cooling of computer components, but also other interesting devices (such as speakers). But in most cases the company is popular due to the production of various CPU coolers.

The base of the CPU cooler Scythe Mugen 4 (SCMG-4000) is a massive Tower-cooler with six copper heat pipes, and the heat is removed by 120 mm PWM-controlled fan. It would seem that we deal with solution with fairly common characteristics. But actually tested cooler has a number of distinctive features, indicating about laborious approach of Japanese engineers to create such devices.

The front side of the package Scythe Mugen 4 contains the image of the radiator and you can draw some conclusions about the features of its design and evaluate the original form of plates. Also here is a list of supported platforms, which informs us about the possibility of cooler to remove heat from all current and some older processors.

The sides bear the most meaningful information, in particular, the specification, graphical indication of the dimensions of the radiator and fan, as well as a list of the main features of the cooler. The latter includes:

  • H.P.M.S (Hyper Precision Mounting System) - fixing system for a number of platforms from AMD and Intel, where a special attention was paid to ease of installation and reliability.
  • T-M.A.P.S. (Three-dimensional Multiple Airflow Pass-through Structure) - the structure of a multi-threaded through-blowing. The radiator is divided into separate sections interconnected by bridges to increase rigidity, which facilitates the removal of heat from the plates.
  • GlideStream 120PWM Fan - a PWM-controlled 120mm propeller GlideStream 120 PWM is used for active heat dissipation.
  • Dual Fan Mountable Structure – the structure allows you to fix the fan from all its sides, or use the two propellers at the same time. Also here is pair of additional fixing brackets (in this case the second fan should be bought separately).
  • Wide Range Cooling Purposes - change in speed of the fan blades in the range of 400 to 1400 rpm allows to flexibly manage the efficiency of cooling depending on the used processor.

Components of cooler are carefully arranged in separate packages. In general, it is big enough, so it includes everything needed to install the cooler on the supported platforms:

  • reinforcement plate for Intel platforms with seal;
  • metal fasteners for different platforms, and the pressure plate;
  • set of racks, screws and nuts;
  • two additional brackets for the second fan;
  • wrench;
  • thermal compound in the package;
  • installation guide.

Note the presence of a set of useful components, like a pair of brackets for the second fan and a wrench with an angled handle, which is useful during the installation of the cooler on the system.

Design and structure

The base of the cooler Scythe Mugen 4 is a massive 625-gram radiator made in original form. Its design consists of six copper 6 mm heat pipes with 50 aluminum plates. The plates have a thickness of 0.35 mm and are spaced 1.8 mm apart.

The unconventional design of the radiator is caused by the use of the aforementioned technology M.A.P.S., contributing to improve airflow through the plates. As you can see, the plates are not continuous along the entire length, but are bridges connecting the separate parts of the structure. This provides sufficient rigidity as well as good air flow.

A distinctive feature of many Scythe coolers is the use of decorative caps on the ends of copper pipes, which gives them a more holistic and complete view.

Copper heat pipes don’t have the nickel layer, but the base is completely nickel-plated. The pipes alternately permeate proximal and distal sections of the radiator, which helps spread the heat evenly throughout the structure. On the reverse side of the base we found ledges. Here the pressure plate is fixed during mounting the cooler.

The base of the cooler Scythe Mugen 4 has dimensions of 38 x 38 mm. Its surface has good polishing, which should positively affect the transfer of heat from the heat-spreading lid of the processor.

In order to provide active airflow here is PWM controlled fan GlideStream 120 PWM (SY1225HB12SM-P). It has a relatively low power consumption (2.16 W) and low speed (1400 rpm), which contributes to the excellent noise performance (noise level up to 28 dB). The fan has the original appearance. Here is a corporate logo of the manufacturer. The original look is provided by channels attached to the blades, designed to optimize the generated air flow. Multi-colored cables are hidden in the fabric braid, fixed by heat shrinkage. Cable length is 30 cm, which is enough for easy connection of fan even to the most remote connector.

The cooler it has a nice appearance as part of the built system. You can evaluate its compatibility with the surrounding components from the photo, but this feature we will describe in more detail.

Installation process

The installation process of the cooler Scythe Mugen 4 on different platforms is described in the PDF-manual on the manufacturer's website. The installation did not cause complications, and it can be carries out even by the most inexperienced user.

For motherboards for AMD's processors first of all you need to remove the front part of the standard attachment. Reinforcement plate is used to set up plastic racks, fixing them with screws with curly heads.

Then fasten complete mounting.

The heatsink is attached with the pressure plate, which uses hex screws. You can use either supplied wrench or 15 cm screwdriver.

Overall cooler with the fan does not allow its use with overclocking RAM modules. The use of modules with high radiators is possible only in slots 3 and 4, which does not allow to install even two modules in dual channel mode. But the lower units (in this case up to 42 mm) don’t have such restrictions.

Of course, you can install the fan from the other side of the radiator. But its position will reduce efficiency of CPU cooling.

Cooler has a good compatibility with other nearby components, in particular a radiator for cooling elements of the processor power subsystem.

Assembled system has a nice appearance. So, black fan merges with the other elements of the same color, and a massive shiny radiator is in harmony with the environment.

To install the cooler Scythe Mugen 4 on platforms with processors from Intel you need to use a complete reinforcement plate. Three locations of holes correspond to the three types of platforms (old Intel Socket LGA775, mainstream Socket LGA115x and high-performance Socket LGA1366 / LGA2011 / LGA2011-v3).

As is the case with the platform AMD, the front side on the plate has plastic rack, screws with curly heads and two metal plates. Since the holes are arranged in the form of a square, it is possible to install the cooler in any convenient manner, depending on where you want to send the hot air: to the rear or upper wall of the case.

The application RAM modules with high radiators on the Intel platform is possible only in the last two DIMM-slots. The standard modules can be used in all connectors.

Also, the cooler is located at a sufficient distance from the near-CPU radiators, not overlapping the first slot (in this case, PCIe x1).

Recall that before installing the cooler you should not forget to apply thermal grease on the heat-spreading lid of the processor, and then to connect the fan to a 4-pin connector on the motherboard.
