Over the past few years mobile processors made a big step in the development and as a result the market remains fairly high popularity of laptops, nettops and other compact configurations. So it’s quite logical that many people are wondering “Why should I buy a bulky and noisy PC, if I can get one for a quiet and compact system?”. Especially this question is popular among those who deals with Internet surfing, work with office applications and movie watching.

However, as with any other configuration, compact system needs to be balanced. That is, its components should not limit the ability of each other. And this applies to absolutely all the components including memory. The main features are capacity, effective frequency and set of delays. All of these characteristics in a greater or lesser extent affect the overall system performance.

This review is devoted to set DDR3L-1600 Transcend TS512MSK64W6H. Its modules belong to energy-efficient series that is capable to operate at reduced voltage. Taking into account that the most compact systems are powered by external power adapters up to 100 W, their component have more strict requirements in terms of power consumption. If we talk about laptops, the energy efficiency of components is almost a determining factor.

Set DDR3L-1600 Transcend TS512MSK64W6H consists of two modules; each is shipped in a separate plastic bag. This package ensures reliable protection against static electricity breakdown. When installing modules it is important to take measures to prevent the discharge of static electricity. This information is given on the sticker.

Memory DDR3L-1600 Transcend TS512MSK64W6H belongs to the type SO-DIMM. In comparison with ordinary modules the SO-DIMM-modules are reduced in size, as often are used in compact devices: laptops, nettops and mini-computers based on motherboards with format Thin-ITX/Mini-ITX. Length of the module is only 67.6 mm, height - 30 mm.

During testing under continuous load the modules temperature was 40,5°C,i.e. about 10°C lower than of full-length modules of standard DDR3 operating at a voltage of 1.5 V. Memory of each module is collected by 8 chips of 512 MB each manufactured by Micron. One plate uses a chip with label D9QVG, and the second - D9QBJ. According to the official documentation the chips have hidden potential. Because among other modes there are DDR3-1866 with timings of 13-13-13. In other words, instead of the declared 1600 MHz memory modules DDR3L-1600 Transcend TS512MSK64W6H can operate at a frequency of 1866 MHz.

It became impossible to identify the chip SPD EEPROM according the marking “4026 8305”.

The sticker on the memory modules ahs minimum information. Only the effective speed (1600 MHz), the volume of one module (4 GB) and its configuration (1 Rank x 8 banks) are specified.

More detailed technical information can be obtained using special utilities. We refused to use popular programs AIDA64 and CPU-Z, as they interpret information from the SPD according the old algorithm. To avoid possible inaccuracies it was decided to use utility Thaiphoon Burner designed specifically for the diagnosis of memory modules. During the testing a set of DDR3-1333 TwinMOS 9DECBMIB with capacity 4 GB (2 x 2 GB) was applied as the opponent. Both sets have been tested in the following modes:

Analysis of the graphs showed that the change in the parameters of RAM affect the performance of the proposed system. AIDA64 benchmark demonstrates that while increasing the modules speed the speed of copying/read/write memory significantly increases. During the transition from the frequency of 1333 MHz to 1600 MHz these figures were increased on 19%/17%/17% respectively, and compared with the speed of 1066 MHz the growth was 47%/52%/46%.

In other tests, increase the system performance was significantly lower, about 3-10%. As for gaming applications, despite the use of the integrated graphics core they did no “respond” to increase the speed of memory.

If we compare the modules DDR3L-1600 Transcend TS512MSK64W6H and DDR3-1333 TwinMOS 9DECBMIB, both sets were “neck and neck” and in all the tests under the same operating conditions showed comparable results.
