Cooler Master V8 GTS CPU cooling system: review and testing

"A dream of modder" these words can describe cooler that came to us for testing. Indeed, when looking at the Cooler Master V8 GTS you remember fiction movies and games, describing the future of humanity. On the other hand, the manufacturer sees in the design of new item eight-cylinder engine of Muscle car. Such unrelated to computers association are promoted by sharp lines used in the design and an interesting arrangement of the device.

But how such an approach of a cooler affects its performance? Will the original design increase the efficiency of heat dissipation? Or even, perhaps, such a solution would be a standard to build a model with more powerful cooling system? The answers to these and other questions can be found later in the review.

At first sight packing of cooler Cooler Master V8 GTS allows us to evaluate its appearance (including the work of the red LED-backlight), and get basic information about the design features and characteristics. On the front side the manufacturer has decided to specify the following advantages of the product:

  • Vapor Chamber Base – the use of evaporator chamber at the base of the cooler, which provides the transfer of heat from the CPU to the heat pipes by evaporating cooling agent;
  • Triple Phase Tower Heatsink - the use of a three-section tower radiator;
  • Self-Lubricating Bearing System - a system for self-lubricating of bearings.

The back side informs us of other equally important features of the cooler:

  • 8 copper heat pipes and 3 radiator sections with aluminum fins provide powerful heat removal and optimized air flow through the radiator fins, accelerating heat dissipation for processors with high heat release;
  • horizontal evaporation chamber (special technology Cooler Master) minimizes the difference in heating of CPU sections and evenly distributes heat to all cooler heat pipes;
  • fan Cooler Master is equipped with 4th generation bearings produced by POM, which ensures dust resistance and long service life (over 160,000 hours).

Note that the above mentioned 160,000 hours are equal to 18 years of continuous operation. Consequently, this cooling system can provide good noise performance and reliable operation.

Also here you can find the information about dimensions of new item that necessarily should be considered before buying because its height is 166.5 mm.

Sidewalls of box provide a detailed specification of the cooling system, as well as its image. Note the extensive list of compatibility, which includes almost all modern platform. Regarding the possibility of cooling of hot solutions such as AMD FX-9370 and FX-9590, the manufacturer promises to remove up to 250 W of heating power. Therefore, the new product is suitable for processors with TDP of 220 W.

Components of Cooler Cooler Master V8 GTS include a number of elements needed for its installation:

  • two reinforcement plates (separately for AMD and Intel);
  • two types of metal fastenings for the platform AMD;
  • a set of washers, nuts and bolts;
  • wrench;
  • thermal paste in the syringe;
  • Installation Guide and a brochure with warranty.

As you can see, the company Cooler Master decided to use two separate reinforcement plates for different platforms instead of frequently used one universal. In addition, the set includes two different types of mounts that allow you to place the cooler in any convenient way (so that the heated air is directed to the rear or on the top of the unit). Note that in the scope of supply also includes the mounting for Intel plate and adapter to connect two fans to one 4-pin connector which was originally installed on the new product.

Due to the nature of design, the cooler radiator has the original form and structure. It consists of three sections: two lateral and most massive central. The first two are different due to vertical arrangement of plates pierced by four extreme heat pipes. Four medium-sized pipes form a central part of the cooler located between the two fans. Aluminum plates used in the construction have a thickness of 0.58 mm. They are located at a distance of 2 mm from each other.

Tubes being used have a thickness of 6 mm. They are covered with a layer of nickel, which allows not only to avoid the reduction of the thermal conductivity of the structure due to the oxidation of copper, but also gives the radiator a more solid and elegant look. The pipes are not soldered to the aluminum plates.

But the marks of solder can be seen at the place of contact of pipes with base. Recall that in contrast to most CPU coolers, the Cooler Master V8 GTS is based on evaporating chamber. This is due to the desire to maximize the uniformity of heat distribution throughout the eight pipes. The effectiveness of such a decision will be characterized during testing.

The only remark is the polished base. So, visible traces of the grinding of metal are clearly seen. They indicate about little surface roughness. For more efficient heat transfer the more desirable is the best possible polished heat sink. Base dimensions are 38 x 47 mm.

Cooling of radiator sections is realized by using two fans with a diameter of 140 mm (Cooler Master A14025-16CB-4FBP-F1). Both are made of translucent black plastic, harmonizing with the other decorative components of the cooler. Rotation speed adjustment of the fan blades is carried by PWM in the range 600 to 1600 rpm (according to the manufacturer).

Note that the complete fans have an interesting fixation: at the top there are two usual holes, but at the bottom such elements are absent. There are only plastic props in the middle, which are the fulcrums of the fans. Therefore, the manufacturer took care of the durability of elements for active cooling.

As you can see in the picture complete propellers are equipped with LEDs.

Mounting of fans to the radiator is realized by means of a plastic casing consisting of three elements: a central and two lateral. The first is fixed to the radiator with two screws, and the other two are fixed on the first in the same way. Of course, such a construction is caused not only by practical aspect, but also plays a decorative role. Here designers Cooler Master V8 GTS did the best. A novelty is really unique, therefore, it will have certain circle of admirers.

Propellers are powered through one 4-pin connector. Using the splitter it can connect both fans. The length of the wires from the fan is 7 cm. But the adapter to connect adds another 23 cm in length, which will be enough to reach even to remote connectors.

LEDs are arranged at the bottom of the fans, but due to their translucent the light is scattered throughout the structure. Also lights of the central part of the cooler are separately connected.

The most impressive LED-illumination is in complete darkness. Agree, only very few models of cooling systems have such a spectacular view both during the day and at night.

Installation process

Installation of the cooler Cooler Master V8 GTS is detailed in the complete instructions available on the official website of the manufacturer. The process of mounting to AMD and Intel platforms can be difficult. Why? We are going to describe it little bit latter.

In the case of AMD main boards first of all you need to remove the standard mount, relieving the mounting holes. Next set a rectangular reinforcement plate and complete four washers on the front side of the motherboard.

As mentioned the novelty comes with two types of fixation for the platform AMD, which allows you to choose the most convenient way. That is, the air flow may be directed either to the rear wall of the housing, or at the top, depending on the preference of the owner.

The entire structure is fixed with screws, using the complete wrench. Ease of use of this tool depends on the height of radiators located in the near space. This factor affects the duration of the process nut torsion. If the flexibility of your fingers is enough to set them, the double-sided wrench will allow to fix a cooling system. Although in case of presence of high radiators, this process will require more time and effort.

In assembled type the cooling system does not connect with nearby radiator and will not overlap the first slot for expansion cards. But make sure that the heat pipes of cooler do not overlap the paths on the devices, as they are very close.

As for the RAM slots, they are available for removal and installation of low-profile memory modules even with mounted cooler. Modules with high radiators (according to our measurements with height up to 60 mm, although the manufacturer recommends limit to 50 mm solutions) are installed in the third and fourth slots without problem, and the first two modules have to be installed before installing the cooler. You won’t install higher models in the first and second slot.

If you will install the novelty in such a way that the air flow will move upward, the compatibility of the memory modules is markedly reduced. Thus, the standard strap RAM installed in the first slot is already hitting the cooler. In the second slot the module did not have such problems, and the memory from the third and fourth slots can be replaced even if a cooler is installed. At the same time you won’t install the modules with high heat sinks.

The assembled system looks great. But don’t forget that the new product has a height of 166.5 mm, which require either the availability of appropriate housing or the refuse of the side wall application. However, given the efficiency of LED-backlight, even the second option seems quite acceptable.

Installation of the cooling system Cooler Master V8 GTS to the platforms with processors from Intel is very similar. It uses other reinforcement plate with installed necessary bolts.

Complete racks allow to obtain four elevated points, where the cooler is attached using the same number of complete nuts. As in the case with platforms of AMD, ease of installation is directly related to the height of the radiators arranged around the socket.

The novelty is in full "understanding" with the components located around the processor.

Low memory modules can be removed and replaced with all slots even if the cooling system is mounted. But model with more overall radiators (higher than 60 mm) installed in the first and second slots will require a complete dismantling of the cooler.

Those who are already eyeing to the new product, we also advises to look for a motherboard, graphics cards, and if possible memory modules with the appropriate lighting. In this case the computer will take over the role of an element of decor and will decorate your workplace, especially in the dark.

Before installing the cooler don’t forget to apply thermal grease on the heat-spreading lid of the processor, and then, using a splitter to connect the fans to the 4-pin connector on the system board.
