AMD A6-7400K processor: review and testing

Updated lineup of AMD APU with a codename «Kaveri» brought a series of new technologies, as well as allowed to reduce the overall power consumption and improve the performance. In previous reviews we have already met with high-performance solutions of this series: AMD A10-7850K, AMD A10-7800 and AMD A10-7700K. This same material will be devoted to a more accessible APU.

AMD A6-7400K

Model AMD A6-7400K is equipped with two cores and a graphics subsystem of series AMD Radeon R5. If you look only at the cost of this new product, in terms of this parameter it is a competitor processor of series Intel Pentium. If you examine this CPU is details, you will notice a more powerful graphics core and as a result you can save money on buying an inexpensive discrete graphics card.

This cooler is based on hydraulic bearing, and its maximum speed can reach 2800 rpm. Also, the manufacturer stated maximum noise level, which should not exceed 20 dB. The fan is connected by a standard four-contact connector that allows to control its speed by PWM method.

The radiator is in contact with a thermally conductive lid of the processor through a thin layer of thermal paste. To fix all the cooling system a standard metal mount with plastic latches is applied. It has proved to be reliable, since it is used in most processors of AMD.

In our opinion, quite interesting is the comparison of standard cooling systems of processors AMD A6-7400K and AMD FX-8320E. As you can see, the used cooler has noticeably smaller radiator and redesigned fan blades. The indicator of its TDP is significantly lower: 65 W versus 95 W.

Performance analysis

Together with a lineup of AMD Kaveri, the AMD has moved to the designation of cores in the CPU and APU instead of graphics. This approach is quite logical, given the micro-architecture features, but we’ll use more familiar ones. So, AMD A6-7400K has two processor cores that operate in two-threaded mode. Its nominal frequency (at the time of reading) was at the level of 3493 MHz with multiplier "x35" and the reference frequency of 100 MHz. Core voltage t was at around 1,240 V.

After activation the technology AMD Turbo Core 3.0, the multiplier value rose to "x39", which led to an increase in clock frequency up to 3900 MHz. Core voltage during the reading was 1,360 V.

When using the bench cooling system the temperature does not exceed 37°C, which is a very good result and significantly expands the list of cooling systems with can be used with this processor.

Under the light load AMD A6-7400K moved to the idle state. In this state its clock frequency should not exceed 1400 MHz (multiplier "x14"), and the voltage was at a very low level of 0.592 V.

Distribution cache is as follows. 16 KB of L1 cache per core with 4 channels of associativity is designed for data caching. Instructions have 96 KB of total L1cache with 3 channels of associativity. Also here is 1024 KB of L2 cache with 16 channels of associativity. Cache memory of L3level is absent in a given processor.
