AMD Sempron 2650 APU review and performance testing

Ultra low-priced processors are always in requisition among buyers due to its incontestable advantages. They make it easy to build an inexpensive desktop computer or the first education computer that will have enough power to run standard everyday applications.

Since 2004 the family of AMD Sempron was extended with different processors and all of them had the lowest price range. After the release of a new energy-efficient platform AMD AM1 AMD Company has changed the design and transformed from classical CPU to hybrid devices with integrated graphics core APU.

New APUs of AMD Sempron are based AMD Jaguar microarchitecture. In accordance with SoC (System-on-Chip) design they combine the computational and graphics cores, memory controller and chipset. At the moment the new series includes two models: AMD Sempron 2650 and AMD Sempron 3850. A summary table of technical specifications is as follows:

The present review will be devoted to dual-core model AMD Sempron 2650 which has a good chance of success in the lowest price category.

AMD Sempron 2650 is shipped in a small cardboard white box. It has a small transparent plastic opening which allows to evaluate the appearance of the processor.

On one box side the manufacturer specified the scope of product application (solutions of everyday tasks, in other words the work with documents and multimedia files, as well as surfing in the Internet). The opposite side there is a protective sticker with hologram and serial number of the product.

The application sheet reflects the process of APU installation as well as proper fixation of packaged cooling system.

The cooler consists of a small radiator fixed on the motherboard using two spring-loaded clips, as well as installed fan. In this case, the model Foxconn PVA050E12L m with diameter 50 mm, operating voltage of 12 V and a current of 0.16 A is used.

Quite interesting is fact that the area contacting with the processor through a thin layer of thermal paste has a circular shape.

Also using the open testbed we have tested the effectiveness of the standard cooling system. Fan operating speed range in automatic mode is between 1300 and 4000 rpm. It is noiseless till the value 3000rpm and only at 4000 rpm appears hardly background noise. In normal operation GPU temperature does not exceed 28°C, and processor cores 40°C, so you should not worry about overheating.

On AMD Sempron 2650 case in addition to labeling, there are the countries of production: the chip is produced in Germany, and final building was in Taiwan. The reverse side contains a set of contacts compatible with the latest Socket AM1.

The main advantage of AMD Sempron 2650 which can be identified in the specification table is low TDP level (25W). If gives the opportunity to use not only compact and low noise active cooler but also completely passive cooling system.

During stress tests performing the APU multiplier was at the highest mark “x14,5” and the clock speed at the moment of readout was at 1447 MHz. Core voltage was 1.288 V.

In idle mode the frequency was reduced to 798 MHz at multiplier value “x8” and voltage 1.072.

And now let’s learn cache memory distribution scheme. For data caching there are 32 KB of L1 cache memory per a core with 8 associativity channels, and 32 KB of L1 memory per a core with 2 associativity channels for instruction caching.

Integrated RAM controller runs in dual channel mode and supports DDR3 modules with frequency up to 1333 MHz. The support of modules with frequency up to 1600 MHz and higher (with automatics reduction till nominal 1333MHz) depends on a certain motherboard model which will be used for this APU.

Since GPU-Z utility has incorrectly defined the characteristics of iGPU AMD Radeon R3, for this purpose we have used another popular program AIDA64. This video accelerator has 128 shader  pipelines, 8 texture blocks and 4 rasterization blocks as well as DirectX 11.2 hardware support. GPU basic frequency is 400 MHz which is automatically reduced up to 200MHz in idle mode. The maximum video memory capacity is 512 MB.
