Intel Core i5-4690K review and testing performance

During the analysis of capabilities of the processor Intel Core i5-4690T we have already mentioned that this year Intel decided to slightly deviate from its strategy «Tick-Tock» for desktop solutions. Two new families, Intel Haswell Refresh and Intel Devil's Canyon do not fit into the framework of the concept and in fact, are only optimized processor of generation Intel Haswell. And if the model of Intel Haswell Refresh were modernized only at the level of frequencies, the solutions Intel Devil's Canyon can boast by improvements on a physical level.

Intel Core i5-4690K

First of all the modifications were connected with thermal interface between the cover of the processor and chip. In previous generations to convey heat the thermal paste was used. And not always the quality was the best. This significantly limits the overclocking potential of the models with an unlocked multiplier. In addition, to achieve an acceptable cooling level we had to bear additional costs for buying powerful coolers.

And then Intel has heard the request of their fans and returned processors to a more efficient thermal interface.

According to the company Intel, it should improve the cooling efficiency of the processor and increase its overclocking potential.

In addition, a small modernization was occurred in the supply scheme of CPU, but full compatibility with the platform Intel Socket LGA1150 was saved.

Intel Core i5-4690K

Today there are only two models included to a series of Intel Devil's Canyon: Intel Core i5-4690K and Intel Core i7-4790K. Gradually they should gradually replace similar models from the family Intel Haswell (Intel Core i5-4670K and Intel Core i7-4770K). And we did not make a reservation. Yes, namely "replace" because the recommended price of new products will match the price of the corresponding 4-core models Intel Haswell. Thus, Intel has once again gone to meet users’ requests by announcing quite tolerant marketing policy in processors Intel Devil's Canyon.

Intel Core i5-4690K

We got test (engineering) sample of the processor in a plastic blister without supplied set and cooling system. We can only assume that due to the similar parameters cooler in box Intel Core i5-4690K will be the same as its predecessor from the family Intel Haswell (Intel Core i5-4670K).

Intel Core i5-4690K

Externally the novelty doesn’t differ from series Intel Haswell and Intel Haswell Refresh. Heat-distribution lid has details of its marking, clock frequency and the country of origin. The phrase «INTEL CONFIDENTIAL» in the samples of retail sale will be replaced by the model name. Also in Retail versions the lid won’t have inscription «ES» meaning the engineering sample.

Since processors of family Intel Devil's Canyon are compatible with the platform Socket LGA1150, the contacts location on the back side is fully consistent with this connector. Also the pleasing aspect of the product is the compatibility with Intel chipsets of eighth series. Thus, if necessary, it will be easy to upgrade the processor from Intel Haswell series and Intel Haswell Refresh without buying a new motherboard. But in this case you have to update the firmware BIOS.

 

Small changes were occurred at the electrotechnical level: in the center of the board there are additional capacitors for better smoothing of the power supply voltage directly on the crystal.

Performance analysis

Intel Core i5-4690K

During normal operation (without technology Intel Turbo Boost 2.0) speed of Intel Core i5-4690K is 3500 MHz with frequency reference 100 MHz and multiplier "x35". At the time of reading the core voltage was 1.091 V.

Intel Core i5-4690K

If you will enable the mode of dynamic increase of the frequency using proprietary technology Intel Turbo Boost 2.0, the multiplier value will increase on 4 points to "x39". Processor clock speed will be increased to the level of 3900 MHz, and the voltage up to 1,198 V. Let’s remind that his predecessor Intel Core i5-4670K, had a limited frequency formula up to values of 3400 and 3800 MHz for the nominal and turbo modes respectively.

Regarding the mechanism of technology Intel Turbo Boost 2.0, it has not any changes. Its activation increases the CPU clock speed on 400 MHz. At the same time the supply voltage of Intel Core i5-4690K was fixed slightly bigger level than for Intel Core i5-4670K: 1,198 V vs 1,182 V. But don’t forget that in absolute terms, the new product is on 100 MHz faster than its counterpart from series Intel Haswell. And TDP level is initially increased slightly: from 84 to 88 W.

Intel Core i5-4690K

In idle mode the multiplier drops to values "x8", thereby decreasing the speed up to 800 MHz. In this case supply voltage is 0.718 V. The same minimum 800 MHz (together with standard value of the reference frequency) we could notice in Intel Core i5-4670K.

Intel Core i5-4690K

Cache Memory Intel Core i5-4690 is distributed as follows:

  • L1 cache memory: each 4-core has 32 KB for data with 8 associativity channels and 32 KB for instructionith 8 associativity channels;
  • L2 cache memory: each core has 256 KB with 8 associativity channels;
  • L3 cache memory: 6 MB for all cores with 12 associativity channels.

The same structure has Intel Core i5-4670K.

Intel Core i5-4690K

A DDR3 memory controller run in dual channel mode and supports modules with frequency up to 1600MHz. Maximum memory capacity is 32 GB.

Intel Core i5-4690K

No structural changes were made in the integrated graphics chip Intel HD Graphics 4600. It uses 20 unified shader pipelines, 4 rasterization blocks and 8 texture units. Even frequency formula remains the same: the nominal speed is 350 MHz, and dynamic is increased up to 1200 MHz. iGPU has up to 1.7 GB. Thus we can suppose that the performance of Intel Core i5-4690K in applications that use resources of the integrated graphics core remained at level of Intel Core i5-4670K.
