Processor Intel Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition: review and testing 

Despite the fact that the announcement of a family of Intel Haswell-E processors was in the end of August this year, the echo will be heard for many months. And this is not surprising. What other processors in the desktop market can boast of such a performance? Or maybe you know another platform for desktop PCs, except Socket LGA2011-v3, which already supports standard memory DDR4? That's why, when we are talking about building of high-performance system, it is not necessary think too much. Obviously, its basis will be one of the processors Intel Haswell-E. According to the results of testing Intel Core i7-5930K left a very good impression, but the new line includes more rapid and functional model Intel Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition.

Intel Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition

For testing we received a pre-sale (test) instance of the processor without packaging. But it has not upset us because about the representatives of the family of Intel Haswell-E are not equipped with standard cooling system.

Externally, the hero of this review is the same as discussed earlier Intel Core i7-5930K. The heat-spreading lid has information on the labeling of pattern (QFRA), its clock frequency (3.0 GHz) and the country of production (Costa Rica). The phrase «INTEL CONFIDENTIAL» in samples for retail sale will be replaced with the name of the processor. Also in Retail- versions there is not an inscription «ES», meaning the engineering sample.

The location of contacts on the back corresponds to CPU Socket LGA2011-v3. Recall that in the result of all the modifications it lost forward and backward compatibility with Socket LGA2011. However, the mounting system for the coolers remained the same. In other words, when you change the platform it is not necessary to buy a new cooling system. The only thing to remember is that the TDP in model Intel Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition has increased to 140 W, whereas for its predecessor series of Intel Ivy Bridge-E this parameter was equal to 130 W.

Performance analysis

However, slightly increased TDP is not the main difference. The main advantage of Intel Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition from Intel Core i7-4960X Extreme Edition is the presence of two additional cores. As a result the number of threads used by the technology Intel Hyper-Threading was increased from 12 to 16. In fact, for "blue" it is the first 8-core processor on the market of desktop solutions. However, their main competitor could achieve this three years ago. But we understand that it is incorrect to compare the cores of processor Intel Haswell-E и AMD Zambezi / AMD Vishera.

In any case, the extra 2 cores should theoretically give a solid boost in applications optimized for multithreading. However, the manufacturer had significantly limit the frequency formula that does not exceed TDP of 140 W.

In normal operation, the speed of Intel Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition is 3000 MHz with the reference frequency of 100 MHz and the multiplier "x30", while the Intel Core i7-4960X Extreme Edition is equal to 3600 MHz. It is important to note that the new product requires less voltage for its correct operation: 0.889V vs. 1.104 V.

 

Intel Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition

In mode of dynamic increasing of the frequency with using proprietary technology Turbo Boost 2.0 multiplier should be increased to a value of "x35", and the frequency, respectively up to 3500 MHz. At least such a situation is in paper. In practice, we could not reach that mark. Under load the maximum value of the multiplier was "X33", and frequency - 3300 MHz. Supply voltage in this case increased to 0.943 V, whichis quite modest rates.

We do not exclude that the speed of 3500 MHz, in principle is achievable. However, it will have to create a specific load, which will rarely occur in actual use of the computer.

 

Intel Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition

Cache memory in Intel Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition is distributed as follows:

  • L1 cache: for each of the 8 cores is 32 KB for data with 8 channels of associativity and 32 KB for instructions and with 8 channels of associativity;
  • L2 cache: for each core has 256K with 8 channels of associativity;
  • L3cache: 20 MB for all cores with 20 channels of associativity.

In comparison with its 6-core predecessor the cache size of the new product has increased at each level. Especially notable changes have occurred in the structure of the L3 cache. Here the increase was 5 MB.

 

Intel Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition

DDR4 memory controller operates in quad channel mode and guarantees the support modules with frequency to 2133 MHz. The maximum memory capacity is 64 GB.
