AOC Q2963Pm monitor review and performance testing

Despite the fact that the displays with screen format 21:9 have already won great popularity, in our country this kind of monitor only starts to develop.

However the users are showing the interest in the wide screen monitors. After all, large screen (29’’) with widescreen panel (21:9) makes it possible to fully enjoy the atmosphere of a movie or game. Nowadays, when the desktop computer is used for entertainment purposes, it is a good argument in favor of choosing these kind displays.

Therefore, the relevance of monitors with ratio 21:9 doesn’t cause any questions, and at the right price policy they have all chances to force now popular standard 16:9. Today we are going to examine and test such type solution AOC Q2963Pm.

AOC Q2963Pm

Monitor AOC Q2963Pm is shipped in quite big cardboard box which provides protection against impacts and possible mechanical damages during transportation. Main place on the front surface is given to the image of the device. At the bottom you can find several logos that describe the features and technologies:

  • MultiPlay is the ability to divide the screen area into several zones (the installation of software from the disk is required);
  • 21:9 – is the screen format;
  • WFHD Resolution is the support of resolution 2560 х 1080;
  • PBP/PIP is the support of simultaneous image output from two sources;
  • DisplayPort/HDMI/MHL is the presence of modern digital video interfaces;
  • IPS Advanced LED is the usage of modern high quality IPS matrix with improved LED lightning.

Also separately here is the most important feature of this monitor a diagonal size 29 inches (73 cm).

AOC Q2963Pm

The set of delivery includes the following components:

  • Stand;
  • Network adapter (AC: 100 - 240 V / 50 - 60 Hz / 1,5 А; DC: 19V / 3,42 А);
  • Power cable;
  • Cable with DVI sockets;
  • Cable with D-Sub sockets;
  • Audio cable;
  • Four gaskets;
  • Cable clamp;
  • CD with documentation and software;

Design and usage properties

AOC Q2963Pm

The monitor has a fairly large size, which can be explained by the usage of 29-inch matrix with a ratio 21:9. Let’s remind that the standard widescreen models this figure is 16:9. From the pint of movie fan view the ratio 21:9 is much better because it eliminates the image from the black strips.

AOC Q2963Pm model has standard contours with a frame around the screen. The panel with matrix is quite thin. This is explained by the lack of power supply unit inside the display. It’s handed out in the form of an external adapter.

AOC Q2963Pm

Also usual “place of residence” have changed the interface sockets, which in this case are located on the leg. It is a broad and massive and has one nonseparable design with monitor.

AOC Q2963Pm

In the upper part of the leg there is a hinge that allows the screen to change the angle between -5° ... +20°. More regulations are not provided.

AOC Q2963Pm

To place the model AOC Q2963Pm on the table you should use a special stand for the leg which can be found among supplied accessories. If the device is supposed to be placed on the wall, it will not have any problems as AOC Q2963Pm is equipped holes (initially are closed with a plastic plate with the inscription “AOC”) for 100 mm VESA mount.

AOC Q2963Pm

Video connectors are represented by one analog port D-Sub and three digital: DVI-D, HDMI and DisplayPort. HDMI port supports MHL standard, due to which AOC Q2963Pm can be connected to compatible smartphones and tablets. All video ports support a resolution of 2560 x 1080 at refresh rate of 60 Hz. We there is DisplayPort Out interface.

AOC Q2963Pm

Using it you can organize a multiscreen configuration of two AOC Q2963Pm monitors. This feature cannot be considered as very big advantage, since all modern graphics cards support output to multiple devices.

Nest to the video ports we could find audio jacks. One of them (green) is used to connect the audio cable to the sound card in your computer, the other (black) is used to connect headphones.

AOC Q2963Pm

In addition, the sound can also be played via two built-in speakers with total capacity of 6 W. They are louder than other speakers of the monitors, but the quality of their sound should be better. These speakers are not suitable to listen the music, but to play the sound of Internet video tapes, the implementation of video calls or video conferencing they are perfectly suited. Therefore, their main purpose is to save space on the desktop.

AOC Q2963Pm

Buttons to control monitor and the navigation are arranged on the right side of the case. Also here is the display operation indicator. In the active state it is blue, and in the idle mode orange. In both cases the brightness is moderate, and placement of LED does not distract attention during hours of darkness.

AOC Q2963Pm

On-screen menu is divided into two columns: the right displays the names of the tabs, and the left their content. This structure is very comfortable to use. It allows you to quickly reach the desired setting.

Using the tabs “Brightness” and “Color calibration” the user can manually set the basic parameters, such as brightness, contrast, gamma, balance of basic colors (RGB). Also here it is possible to select the preset profiles. There are three different groups of modes: brightness, color and DCB. During testing we’ll explore their options and determine which ones are the most suitable for use in different situations.

AOC Q2963Pm

The selection of sound and image sources is carried on the tab “PIP setting”. It is possible to control the function Picture-In-Picture (PIP). Its essence lies in the fact that the screen can simultaneously display the images from two different sources.

The following pictures show how the technology works in practice.

PBP” mode (two images divide the screen area to into equal parts)

AOC Q2963Pm

“PIP” mode (the first source image is displayed on the whole screen while the second one in a small daughter window in the angle of the screen)

Testing

As we’ve reported above there are three preset group of profiles. Let's take a detailed look at each of them.

Study the characteristics of group profiles “Brightness Mode (Eco)”

The first is called “Brightness Mode (Eco)” and includes six modes: “Game”, “Internet”, “Movie”, “Sports”, “Standard” and “Text”. Testing has shown that the main parameter which varied depending on the mode, was the brightness of the monitor.

At maximum brightness the power consumption didn’t exceed 40 W which is a very good result. Other indicators (except brightness) remained the same so there is no need provide separate graphs.

AOC Q2963Pm

CIE- diagram of “Brightness Mode (Eco)” profiles

Real color gamut fully compliant with sRGB. Green and red dots are shifted with respect to the reference points of sRGB triangle. However, the nature of their arrangement suggests that none of the colors will have the lack of color range. This is also confirmed by the obtained numerical indicators. In all cases the coating of space sRGB varies near mark 98% which is an excellent result. The maximum value is 98.6%, which makes the monitor AOC Q2963Pm the best solution among other previously tested.

AOC Q2963Pm

The same impressive results were obtained in an experiment with color accuracy: mean deviation dE*94 (ΔE) was equal to 0,47-0,48 and the maximum 1,81-2,13. Recommended values are, ≤1 and ≤3 respectively. In other words, the model AOC Q2963Pm is perfect for professional work with color in graphics packages (photo, video editing, printing).

In all cases gamma curves ideally apply on the reference curve. Only during the activation of "Standard" profile there is a slight "sagging" of the blue channel. Thus, the screen will have image of the perfect balance: good brightness, deep black colors and perfect display of items in hues.

Curves of green and blue colors are near the reference line (100%), and only the red line slightly deviates from it (at the level of 90-95%).

Study the characteristics of group profiles “Color modes”

After choosing the profile “Standard” we decided to examine the characteristics of the modes of the group “Color modes”. In this case, they are 5: «sRGB», «Normal", "user", "warm" and "cold". Since the manufacturer has made an emphasis on the color characteristics, the main indicators do not look so uniform.
