Monitor ASUS MX27AQ: review and testing

Annual exhibition Consumer Electronics Show 2015 of IT innovations held in early 2015 in Las Vegas was quite successful for the company ASUS, which introduced a number of innovations. And one of them will be discussed in this review.

We are talking about the monitor ASUS MX27AQ, which belongs to a series of ASUS Designo. One of the key features of this display lineup is an original and stylish design. It is not surprising that the new product has already received the prestigious iF Design Award 2015.

The model ASUS MX27AQ is based on modern matrix type AH-IPS with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. It has the support of a number of proprietary technologies such as ASUS Eye Care, Flicker-Free and Low Blue Light that reduce eye strain, and an integrated sound subsystem powered by Bang & Olufsen ICEpower. Let's move to the review, the traditional start it with consideration of detailed specifications.

Package and content

ASUS MX27AQ

Monitor ASUS MX27AQ is shipped in a rather large cardboard box, which provides protection from shock and possible mechanical damage during transportation. As you can see, a key element of the package design is the image of the device. At the bottom you can find a number of logos used in describing the monitor features and technologies:

  • SonicMaster - a set of hardware and software to improve sound quality, developed by companies ASUS and Bang & Olufsen ICEpower;
  • IPS - a matrix of type AH-IPS, which differs accurate color rendering in used;
  • Ultra-wide viewing angle - wide viewing angles (178 ° in both planes);
  • DisplayPort / HDMI / MHL - the availability of modern digital video interface;
  • AudioWizard - a separate item in the menu to select one of three preset profiles of sounding or to configure a native mode with 5-band equalizer;
  • ASUS EyeCare, Flicker-Free and Low Blue Light - a number of technologies to improve the comfort of work and reduce the strain on the user's eyes.

ASUS MX27AQ

The main difference between the back and front side of the box is the angle of the monitor ASUS MX27AQ.

ASUS MX27AQ

The supplied set contains the following accessories:

  • AC adapter (AC: 100 - 240 V/50 - 60 Hz / 1.5 A; DC: 19V / 3.42 A);
  • AC power cord;
  • cable DisplayPort;
  • leg-stand;
  • User's Guide.

Perhaps the monitor cable HDMI is more logical but the fact of presence the cable DisplayPort is very nice.

Design and operation conditions

ASUS MX27AQ

A distinctive feature of this model is the very stylish and recognizable design. Its key elements are the almost complete absence of upper side frames and the width of 0.1 cm and an attractive lower plastic panel, simulating brushed aluminum. Note that the design of ASUS MX27AQ is very similar to other models of series ASUS Designo. It differs only by color the bottom panel, which was previously painted in gray color. In our opinion, the new color scheme is much more advantageous, as dark gray color looks more severe.

ASUS MX27AQ

The reverse side of the case is made of opaque plastic. It doesn’t have support for mounting VESA, that is wall mounting is complicated. The case thickness is only 1.25 cm, since the power supply handed out and presented as a separate adapter.

The absence of built-in power supply has positive impact on weight of ASUS MX27AQ, which, together with the stand is only 5.5 kg.

ASUS MX27AQ

Stand is a relatively small metal ring with plastic metal insert in the center. Despite the simplicity of its design, it provides good stability on a table.

ASUS MX27AQ

ASUS MX27AQ

Unfortunately, such a stylish stand has a disadvantage in the form of limited freedom of adjustments. The user can only change the angle of the screen in the range of -5 ° to + 20 °, while it is impossible to put monitor vertically or adjust the height. We also note the absence of any method of laying cables. Given the lack of USB-interface, only two cables will be connected to the monitor. They are power supply and interface cables. They will not significantly disrupt the aesthetic harmony of the interior.

ASUS MX27AQ

Points in the lower right corner are indicators that specify buttons located on the bottom.

ASUS MX27AQ

There are seven mechanical buttons to control the monitor and a small LED indicating the activity of the device. While the computer is working it glows white, and in idle more it is red.

ASUS MX27AQ

A distinctive feature of ASUS MX27AQ is audio subsystem developed by the company Bang & Olufsen ICEpower, which includes two built-in 25 mm speaker with total capacity of 6 W. In terms of sound quality they are comparable to entry-level desktop speakers; that is worked out the entire frequency range, including the bass, which is rare in competitive counterparts. While listening we did not notice any sound distortion, even at maximum volume, the stock of which should be sufficient for background music playing, watching movies and communication.

ASUS MX27AQ

All interfaces and connectors are grouped on the back side of the monitor. There are: HDMI / MHL, two HDMI, DisplayPort, 3,5-mm audio jack for headphones, power connector and lock Kensington. Do note the port HDMI/MHL, which allows the monitor to display multimedia content from compatible portable devices.

On-screen menu

ASUS MX27AQ

Quick menu allows you to control the speaker volume, adjust the filter of blue light, choose the video input, run the main menu, and enable «QuickFit», which displays the line with the real dimensions of popular formats, which contributes to precise adjustment of images during editing.

The main menu contains a fairly wide range of options.

ASUS MX27AQ

In the first tab «Splendid» you can select one of the preset modes with calibrated settings.

ASUS MX27AQ

Section "Filter of blue light" is used to reduce the proportion of blue that makes the image warmer and more comfortable for long-term operation of the monitor. The user can use four levels of this system, as well as its complete shutdown.

ASUS MX27AQ

In the section "Color" you can adjust the brightness, contrast and saturation, and color mode.

ASUS MX27AQ

In order to adjust of sharpness, aspect ratio, acceleration of the matrix, enable or disable dynamic contrast you can use the tab "Image".

ASUS MX27AQ

In the section "Sound", in addition to the possibility to adjust the volume of the integrated speakers, is the item «AudioWizard», where you can select one of three preset profiles or customize your own sound mode with a 5-band equalizer.

ASUS MX27AQ

Select "Input Selection" allows you to change the signal source.

ASUS MX27AQ

The next to last  section allows you to activate the "ECO" mode, function Game Plus, run the demo mode «Splendid», change the language, and reset all settings to default values.

ASUS MX27AQ

The last item is used to configure shortcut keys (the first two of seven at the end of the monitor).

Testing

ASUS MX27AQ

During testing the hardware platform of the model ASUS MX27AQ played mini-computer ZOTAC ZBOX nano ID65 PLUS. Full description of the methodology of monitor research you can read the relevant material.

The model ASUS MX27AQ contains eight preinstalled profiles: "Reading," "Darkroom", "Theatre", "Standard", "scenery", "Night view", "Game" and «sRGB». Their main characteristics obtained during testing are given in the following table:

According to the passport data, the nominal brightness of the monitor is 300 cd/m2. Two profiles of eight, namely, "Scenery" and "Standard" have overstated value. In another two ("Night view" and "Game"), this figure is close to the nominal level. The minimum result was recorded when testing mode "Darkroom" - just 49.7 cd/m2. It is specially configured to reduce eye strain in a minimum illumination.

Indicators of static contrast is also quite good in most cases they exceed 900:1, at the stated level of 1000:1. But setting the white point is not particularly accurate: in almost all modes it was significantly higher than reference values of 6500 K.

CIE-diagrams of most modes are very similar to each other, except, perhaps, only section "Theater" where there is the greatest deviation. Virtually all of them have a shift of reference points, which leads to a lack in some areas (mostly in dark blue and purple) and a glut in the other (green, yellow, blue and orange). Modes «sRGB» and "Read" win in this respect, showing color gamut of sRGB space at the level of 96.5% and 98.5%, respectively. And the results of profile "Theater" were the worst - only 82.1%.

As for color accuracy, the profiles "Read", "Standard" and «sRGB» showed very good results. In other we observed deviations from the norm. This is especially noticeable in the profile "Theater".

As you can see, each of the profiles has deviations of red and blue components of the reference line of 100%. This is especially true for red curve which in most cases is between 80% and 90%. But the curve of green shades usually remains within acceptable values.

The most acceptable result is obtained in the profile «sRGB», but in this case the red curve was understated, and blue was overstated. The most understated blue component we can see in the profile "Read". It ise made specifically to reduce eye strain during prolonged work with the text. And a special mention deserves the profile "Theater", the activation of which will lead to a bluish tint of the image, which can be good for cold landscapes, but in general we do not recommend to its use.

In most cases, the mean value of gamma curves have been overstated. Closest to the reference value 2.2 were profiles "Game" and "Scenery". The curves are below the standard black line. This means that the image looks darker than the original.
