ASUSPB279Q monitor: review and testing

ASUS is known due to the fact that it well ahead of the competition for the production of new products equipped with the most modern technology. Today's review is not a disappointment to the fans of its products. ASUS PB279Q is equipped with a matrix with high pixel density. As a result the image is very sharp and can boast a good color gamut. But that's not all. At the moment, ASUS PB279Q is one of the extremely few 27-inch 4K-monitors with IPS-matrix.

Package and content

ASUS PB279Q

ASUS PB279Q model comes in a simple cardboard box that emphasizes producer’s care about the environment. It shows the name of the product, the basic specifications and reference to the three-year warranty. There is a plastic handle and a side cut.

ASUS PB279Q

Package of ASUS PB279Q includes:

  • the power cord;
  • HDMI and DisplayPort;
  • audio cable;
  • manual;
  • plastic element for cable laying.

Set is enough to install and start the work.

Design and operation conditions

Monitor comes in a semi assembled state. After unpacking the product the owner will have to mount the center part on the stand using the thumbscrews.

ASUS PB279Q

Appearance of ASUS PB279Q is utilitarian and austere. It almost doesn’t differ from other products of Taiwanese company. The device uses LED lights, so the weight of the monitor does not exceed eight kilos. The case is not very thick. It is made of black plastic with a different texture.

ASUS PB279Q

The back panel is covered with semi-matt plastic with a diamond-shaped pattern, and the front panel and the stand is made from rough and opaque, resistant to fingerprints. Rear bar on the central column and one of the ASUS logo on the body is made of glossy plastic.

It is possible to mount the monitor on a wall using bracket VESA 100 x 100 mm.

ASUS PB279Q

Stand ASUS PB279Q is fairly thick and stable, which provides a reliable arrangement of the monitor on the table. It looks simple and matches the rigorous design of the product. If desired, the central column can have the plastic element for cable laying.

Fitting of parts and build quality raises no objections. You won’t find backlashes.

ASUS PB279Q

The back side of the monitor has a set of external interfaces consisting of the power connector, four HDMI 1.4 (with support for MHL), DisplayPort 1.2 and Mini DisplayPort 1.2, and audio input and output.

Behind the monitor there are two built-in speakers with total capacity of 4 W (RMS). They can not fully replace a separate sound system because they practically do not have low frequencies and high are weak. And the maximum volume is not very big. However, they it will be enough for watching videos, listening to music or undemanding communication through the Internet.

ASUS PB279Q

Inclination angle ranges from -5 ° to + 20 °. It can be rotated by 60° in the horizontal plane (function Swivel) and 90° in the vertical (function Pivot). The height varies between 130 mm.

ASUS PB279Q

Stand base and fasteners of monitor are made of metal. For better mounting to the surface of the table the stand is equipped with four legs with felt.

Display menu and operational demonstration of proprietary technologies

ASUS PB279Q

To control the monitor the uses have seven (along with the power button) mechanical buttons located at the rear part of the lower body. They are quite tight, so it is better to hold the monitor during manipulation. Front position is defined by white dots and screen prompts. Other references, including engraving with the designation of functions are not provided.

ASUS PB279Q

Quick menu bears the following functions: brightness control, activation of one of the modes QuickFit, control of preset modes Splendid and select the video source. Function QuickFit displays the line with the real dimensions of popular formats, which should help in the adjustment of images during editing.

The main menu contains a fairly wide range of options.

ASUS PB279Q

Using the first tab «Splendid» you can select one of the preset modes with calibrated settings.

ASUS PB279Q

"Color" is responsible for brightness, contrast, skin tone and color temperature selection.

ASUS PB279Q

"Image" is necessary to adjust the sharpness, aspect ratio, acceleration of the matrix, on/off dynamic contrast.

ASUS PB279Q

Sound settings are grouped in the appropriate menu.

ASUS PB279Q

The tab "Settings PIP/PBP» is responsible for setting the images displaying from multiple sources.

ASUS PB279Q

Item "Input Selection" allows you to identify the source of used signal.

ASUS PB279Q

"System Setup" allows you to activate the "ECO" mode that significantly reduces the brightness, run the demo mode «Splendid», activate Game Plus and reset all settings to their default values.

ASUS PB279Q

Tab "Shortcut" allows you to assign the Quick Menu buttons.

Testing

ASUS PB279Q

Hardware platform during testing of the model ASUS PB279Q was a mini-computer ZOTAC ZBOX nano ID65 PLUS. Full description of the methodology of research of monitor, you can read the relevant material.

ASUS PB279Q features eight modes: “sRGB”, “Game”, “Night View”, “Theater”, “Scenery”, “Standard”, “Darkroom”, “Reading”. First of all let’s look at the figures in the table obtained during testing, and then analyze them in detail.

Maximum brightness level was 303.7 cd/m2, which is enough for comfortable work. Minimum brightness dropped to 44.6 cd/m2 in a specially configured profiles to reduce eye strain. The static contrast of only a few profiles was significantly lower the promised 1000:1 («sRGB» - 581:1, "Night" - 694:1). In other modes it was 800 - 900:1 or even exceed the value of 1000:1.

Setting of the white dot is not particularly accurate: temperature in all modes, except for "Darkroom" and "Reading" significantly overstated, leading to the formation of spurious tones.

If you do not pay attention to the profile of "Theater", the CIE-diagram of other modes seems very similar to each other. There is a small shift of control points, which leads to a lack in some areas (mainly in shades of pink and red) and oversaturation in the other (blue, turquoise, green, light green, pink and orange). Modes «sRGB» and "Standard" win, showing good color gamut calibration. And here are the results of profile "Theater" cause some confusion.

During measuring color accuracy the profiles "Darkroom", "Reading", "Standard" and «sRGB» provided very good results. In the other there were significant deviations from the norm. Do note the profile of "Theater" where the variations in color reproduction are too high.

Most profiles show very reasonable picture of the distribution of the color components. The exception is the mode "Theater" where differences of RGB levels are quite significant. But in the profile "Reading" the blue component is deliberately understated over the entire range in order to reduce eye strain during prolonged work with the text.

In terms of gamma curve the profile "Theatre" proved to be one of the best. However, this is still not enough to see the point of its use. The best mode can be called «sRGB», and then "Standard". In other modes there are slight deviations from the standard curves. However, a good level of static contrast will not provide significant disadvantages. Only a small loss of parts of the light objects in the shadows is possible.
