ViewSonic VG2433SMH Monitor review and performance testing

At the end of last year ViewSonic Company has announced a new line of projectors and monitors. Among all products a special place was taken by a model ViewSonic VG2433SMH because due to its characteristics it mostly corresponds to the concept “mass usage monitor". Although the company informs that this device is designed for the corporate market segment but we understand that such solutions are often used for home computers due to a ratio of affordable price and acceptable functions.

Unfortunately we don’t have any information about the cost of model ViewSonic VG2433SMH. But its capabilities we are going to test for this review.

Packaging and content

The company only plans to launch ViewSonic ViewSonic VG2433SMH to CIS market. Due to this reason we have obtained its pre-marker version in a usual cardboard box. There is no doubt that in retail it will have a more colorful design with the image of the monitor and the detailed description of its features.

ViewSonic VG2433SMH model includes the following components:

  • stand;
  • audio cable;
  • cable with VGA sockets;
  • fixing screws.

We didn’t find a power cable and cable to connect the monitor via a digital video interface in a box. Most likely it is a feature of our particular sample and in the market the monitor will have a more complete set of delivery.

Design and technical specification

ViewSonic VG2433SMH model has a standard tame design with a thick frame around the screen. The body is made of plastic and painted in a usable matt black color. The display has 24 inches (visible region is 23.6 inches) with a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080.

In comparison with many modern monitors, ViewSonic VG2433SMH is equipped with mount VESA 100 mm so it is no problem to place it on the wall.

The stand is pretty large that provides good firmness of the monitor on the table. There are no complaints regarding its functionality. It has two main adjustments: according screen angle of inclination (from -5 ° to +25 °) and high (0 to 100 mm). Also there is a possibility to change the screen orientation from horizontal to vertical and rotate the monitor on its axis. The lower part of the stand is equipped with rubber gaskets that increase its firmness and protect furniture from scratches.

Controls are arranged in butt end of the monitor. They include five buttons and their symbols are placed on the front panel.

Also there is also activity indicator and it has moderate brightness. So it won’t detract attention from the picture.

All interfaces and sockets are integrated on a back panel. To the right there are: output for headphones, audio, D-Sub, DVI-D, HDMI. To the left: mains socket.

Let’s note that there are 2 on-board speakers with total capacity 4W. However, the product positioning leaves its mark because the sound quality is far from satisfactory. Such speakers won’t be suitable for comfortable listening to music but for video calls or video conferencing quite they are quite good. Therefore, their main purpose is to save space on the desktop.

Menu call is realized due to a button “1” and its closure by “2” button (but on the screenshot the action is depicted vice versa) and may confuse the user. Verbal designation “Menu/Enter” and “Exit/Cancel” would be more suitable.
The structure of display menu is quite intuitive.

Basic settings to change the contrast and brightness are located on the eponymous tab. Selecting preset profiles provided from the submenu "Adjusting Color". Here you can also adjust the balance himself each of the three primary colors (red, blue and green).

Another interesting functions are control of built-in speakers volume and energy saving modes.

Testing

Profile basic parameters

Producer has installed 5 profiles: “sRGB”, “Bluish”, “Cool”, “Native” and “Warm”. Tested characteristics are given in the following table:

According to published data nominal brightness is 250 cd/m2. However in practice none of the profiles could come close to this value. The maximum value was fixed at 217.7 cd/m2 during the activation of “Warm” mode. In most cases this index will be enough. If you spend a lot of time in front of the monitor you should use the profiles with lower brightness with the aim to reduce eyes load.

Depending on the chosen mode, the contrast coefficient is within290:1 - 379:1 which is noticeably lower to given in the specification (1000:1). Instead of rich and saturated color picture on the screen you’ll get dull image.

Power consumption of the display in all profiles isthe same 23 W. When you activate the power-saving function “ECO Save” this value is 5 W reduced. In waiting mode the monitor energy consumption is reduced to 1W.

In all cases there is approximately the same situation: green and red reference points are shifted from the reference values of sRGB triangle. As it can be seen from the diagrams, a slight drawback of the color range will be on red and pink hues. In general the covering of sRGB is pretty good:
