Packing of motherboard ASUS RAMPAGE V EXTREME is designed as large cardboard box. Traditionally for the ASUS ROG series the design has red shades. On the front side of the package are logos of ASUS ROG series and the manufacturer, and model name. Also here is the note about the presence of the supplied module OS Panel, support of technologies AMD CrossFireX and NVIDIA SLI, as well as compatibility with the operating system Windows 8.1.

  • О.С. Socket - a proprietary feature of ASUS motherboard based on chipset Intel X99, which has already a patent application. In contrast to the standard CPU socket Socket LGA2011-v3, ASUS OS Socket has a large number of contact legs. As we know, the new processors of Intel Haswell-E have more contact areas than the legs in the slot. So ASUS has updated the CPU socket. In combination with a proprietary UEFI BIOS it is possible to provide more stable voltage on the CPU and memory under heavy load during acceleration and thus achieve better results.
  • Extreme Engine Digi + IV - updated digital power system of motherboard includes the new chips PowIRstage IR3555, made in the design of Single Package, with high efficiency, long life and low heat generation; more efficient chockes MicroFine with reduced heat and increased stability, as well as high-quality solid capacitors 10K Black Metallic.   • GameFirst III - technology designed to optimize Internet traffic in order to increase the priority of online games, which should reduce the delays and accordingly make the gameplay more comfortable. You can also select the priority “media streaming”, VoIP or file sharing.
  • LANGuard - as part of a LAN port, a special safety device that will help prevent damage to the system due to shock or static electricity during a thunderstorm.

Design and features

ASUS RAMPAGE V EXTREME is performed on the black circuit board in format E-ATX (305 x 272 mm) and designed in full accordance with the traditions of the line ASUS ROG, where one part of the ports and connectors is red, while the other is black. Also note the very massive radiators of the aggressive form.

Do note the inscription «REPUBLIC OF GAMERS» near the CPU socket, which lights up and goes out every 3 seconds, if the PC is in waiting mode.

Traditionally the area of the PCB with a sound system is highlighted that will appeal to owners of cases with a transparent lid and modding enthusiasts.

As for the convenience of system building and on-board elements layout, all performed at the highest level. Virtually we did not have any claims, despite the use of the mass of the functional components. It should only warn about slightly shifted mounting holes of the right side, so you need to carefully connect the main power connector.

On the reverse side of the motherboard, in addition to the standard base plate of CPU socket, you can note the line PCI Express 3.0 distribution scheme depending of installed CPU model. Also there is a massive plate under the chipset, which apparently aims to improve the structure rigidity and heat dissipation.

Separately note the additional support plate of the socket in the scope of delivery, which is useful when installing the modified cooling systems based on liquid nitrogen. It will allow to install such decisions on Socket LGA2011-v3, which were originally designed for socket Socket LGA2011.

At the bottom of the board there are the following connectors: front panel audio leading-in socket, socket of additional power of slots PCI Express 3.0 x16, port TPM, module TB_HEADER (to realize interface Thunderbolt), KeyBot function button and button of switching of audio profiles Sonic SoundStage, two from six sockets of system fans, one module to connect extension panel with ports USB 3.0, switch between chips with firmware BIOS, as well as front panel leading-in socket.

The possibility of organizing a disk subsystem is presented by socket M.2 х4 PCIe 3.0 (support of SSD-drives of formats M.2 2260, 2280 and 22110), eight SATA 6 Gb/s ports. There is a support of SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5 and RAID 10.

Since Intel chipset H99 can not provide the work of all mentioned above interfaces, for the operation of one port SATA Express the controller ASMedia ASM106SE was used. Due to lack of available chipset lines, as well as the presence of a large number of controllers on the motherboard, there is a number of restrictions on the simultaneous use of ports and connectors:

  • one slot PCI Express 3.0 x16 (Scheme PCIE_X8_4) sharess the bandwidth with interface M.2 x4 PCIe 3.0, and their co-operation depends on the installed processor. In the case of the CPU models that support 40 lines PCI Express 3.0, both interfaces can be operated simultaneously in mode x4. If M.2-drive is not installed, the connector PCIE_X8_4 can use all 8 lines. In the case of the processor Intel Core I7 5820K, which supports only 28 lines PCI Express 3.0, slot PCIE_X8_4 will always be off, respectively, M.2 x4 PCIe 3.0 will be workable.
  • expansion slot PCI Express 2.0 x4 (in Scheme PCIE_X4_1)shares the bandwidth with slot PCI Express 2.0 x1, two USB 3.0 ports on the interface panel (on the scheme USB3_E910) and one of the two SATA Express (Scheme SATAExpress_E1). If the slot PCI Express 2.0 x4 has installed expansion card for which the necessary is mode x1 or x2, the SATA Express will not be available. If the expansion card requires mode x4, above-mentioned USB 3.0 ports, and a slot PCI Express 2.0 x1will not be available.

Main board ASUS RAMPAGE V EXTREME is equipped with eight DIMM-slots for memory modules DDR4, which are equipped with latches only on one side. RAM can operate in four-channel mode. To implement it the modules must be installed according one of the following scheme.

Modules operating at frequencies up to 2133 MHz in nominal mode and up to 3300 MHz are supported. The maximum amount of memory can be up to 64 GB, which is enough for any tasks.

Top right corner of the circuit board deserves a special attention because there are: button «MemOK!», which allows you to automatically pick up the necessary parameters of the memory for the successful launch of the system; diagnostic LED-indicator; power and reset buttons; reference points for measuring voltages on all key elements of the system by a multimeter; switch of mode «Slow mode»; group of switches to control slots PCI Express x16, as well as buttons «ReTry» and «Safe Boot». The first is for instant reboot the system, while the last puts it in the safe mode.

Cooling system of the product includes three aluminum radiators: one for heat removal from chipset Intel X99, while the others cover elements of power subsystem. They are separated by nickel-plated heat pipe. In the process of testing the following temperature indices were fixed:

  • radiator for chipset cooling – 37.5°C;
  • radiator for cooling of processor elements power – 41.1°C.

The received results can be characterized as good and we can hope for high overclocking potential.

Processor power supply is performed via 8-phase scheme for computational cores and additional joints. Converter is based on a digital PWM controller ASP1257 with integrated Extreme Engine DIGI+ IV power consumption subsystem control. All power components of CPU have high reliability level: solid capacitors Black Metallic, chips PowIRstage IR3555 and chokes MicroFine.
