            Mini PC GIGABYTE GB-BXi5G-760: review and testing

Not so long ago we’ve examined in detail the compact gaming system from GIGABYTE, based on a bundle the processor and graphics card from AMD and executed in the same color.

In contrast to the GIGABYTE GB-BXA8G-8890 model GIGABYTE GB-BXi5G-760, which will be discussed in this review, is performed on a bunch of Intel processors and discrete graphics accelerator from NVIDIA, namely the Intel Core i5-4200H and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760. Other interesting features include very compact dimensions, original and bright design, support for wireless connectivity, as well as the fact that the manufacturer is forced to disable the graphical processor core, limiting the user to only a discrete graphics card. Let's look at this new product in more details.

As we mentioned this model uses 2-core processor Intel Core i5-4200H with technology Intel Hyper-Threading, which allows to process up to four threads. It is based on 22 nm microarchitecture, Intel Haswell. The base frequency of its work is 2800 MHz. It can be dynamically accelerated up to 3400 MHz. Also note the rather low level of TDP, which does not exceed 47 W, which is important for a compact system.

Also here is a power-saving mode where the operating frequency is lowered to 800 MHz.

The integrated memory controller supports modules DDR3L 1333 MHz and 1600 MHz, and a voltage of 1.35 V. They can operate in dual channel mode. The maximum capacity of memory is 16 GB.

The main advantage of this model is the presence of a discrete graphics card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760. However, if you look at its characteristics, it becomes clear that we face with a very familiar pattern. According to utility GPU-Z 0.8.0, it has 1344 CUDA-cores, 112 texture and 24 ROP blocks. Traditional desktop version includes 1152 CUDA-cores, 96 texture and 32 ROP blocks. Basic rate of used GPU is 941 MHz, and with the work of NVIDIA GPU Boost 2.0 it reaches an average of 967 MHz. Video memory (6GB) operates at a frequency of 5000 MHz effective. The data exchange between the graphics processor and memory is realized via the bus 192-bit, which is capable of passing information of 120 GB per second. A desktop NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 is equipped with a 2 or 4 GB of memory and 256-bit memory bus. And its standard clock frequencies are above 980 and 1033 MHz for the GPU and 6000 MHz memory. However, the reduction of operating speeds is quite understandable desire to reduce power consumption and heat release.

In the utility AIDA you can find a mention of the used video accelerator NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M, rather than NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760. At the same time the specification of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M is identical to the graphics card installed in the GIGABYTE GB-BXi5G-760, but we will continue to call it the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760.

Packing of mini PC GIGABYTE GB-BXi5G-760 is designed as a sufficiently large cardboard box, decorated in dark colors. The front side has the image of the device and the name of the manufacturer.

On the reverse side the manufacturer put the description of the key advantages of new product, as well as the front and back image of interface panels. A delivery set, as well as a list of necessary additions for the full operation of the system is listed here. Since the mini-PC is available as barebone-system, you will need additional memory modules, storage and operating system (Windows 7 and next are supported).

Inside the box the computer is securely fixed using cardboard shapes, foam gaskets and antistatic package, which should prevent it against damage during transportation.

Supplied set of GIGABYTE GB-BXi5G-760 includes:

  • mount VESA;
  • the power cord;
  • power supply;
  • cable Mini DisplayPort ↔ DisplayPort;
  • cable mini-HDMI ↔ HDMI;
  • flash drive with drivers and utilities;
  • adapter to connect a microphone and headphone to combo audio jack;
  • User's Guide.

The capacity of the complete flash memory is 8 GB, half of which is reserved for drivers and utilities.

Design

Case design of tested model is almost identical to GIGABYTE GB-BXA8G-8890. The only exception is the color scheme, made in the style of the company NVIDIA, and a set of ports on the back panel of the interface panel. Case dimensions are a very modest 59,6 x 128 x 115,4 mm. Despite the plastic construction, the aluminum frame for mounting all components is used inside. A special mention is very easily soiled insertion of glossy plastic, which perfectly collect fingerprints and dust.

The bottom cover is attached with four screws. Also, there is a label with technical data. The parameters of the external power supply unit are important: its capacity should be at least 180 W at a voltage of 19.5 V and a current of 9.23 A. Two small holes on the sides are designed for fixing the VESA-compatible complete fastening.

As for four small rubber legs at the edges of the housing, they improve the grip with the surface and delete possible vibrations.

The top panel has the only button that is responsible for the activation of the system. It has a LED-backlit of blue color that lights up after activation of the PC.

The front and the back sides are designed for different interfaces. On the front panel there are two USB 3.0 ports and a combined audio jack for headphones and a microphone, which can be connected simultaneously with the included adapter.

Other connectors are concentrated on the rear panel. There are: power connector, lock Kensington, two mini-HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, network interface RJ45 port and two USB 3.0 ports. Also here is a ventilation grille.

Most of lateral faces have vents needed for better circulation of air inside such a compact housing.

The reverse side of the bottom cover of the test model is designed to install 2.5-inch drives a thickness of 7.0 or 9.5 mm.

Looking inside the body, the first thing that draws attention is two slots for RAM of format SO-DIMM, pre-wireless interface module Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.0, as well as free slot mSATA for installation solid state drive. Cable SATA required for a 2.5-inch drive is connected to a small port near the wireless interface module.

On the back side of the motherboard we found sufficiently large copper heatsink with fins, which serves to cool the processor and chipset. Inside the radiator is one sealed heat pipe, which is used for better heat removal of the key components of the board.

The motherboard is made on a compact blue PCB which is only slightly smaller than the computer case (100 x 105 mm). The processor is pwered by a two-phase scheme for cores and additional nodes. Converter is based on a digital PWM controller NCP81102 manufactured by ON Semiconductor.

Gigabit LAN-controller Realtek RTL8111G is used to support network connections.

The audio subsystem of motherboard is based on the audio codec Realtek ALC283.

Multi I/O capabilities are assigned to the chip IT8773FN, which controls the fans, as well as monitors.

Under the motherboard into the case there is a graphics subsystem implemented as a separate circuit board with its own passive cooling system.

A massive copper heatsink is used for cooling of the GPU and four of the twelve video memory chips.

In order to provide more efficient heat transfer inside the radiator is soldered by three copper heatpipes.

The radiator is in contact with the graphics core and video memory chips with a small layer of thermal paste and special thermal interface.

Six gigabytes of video memory standard GDDR5 model NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 are collected with the help of twelve chips Samsung K4G41325FC-HC03 with capacity of 512 MB each. They operate on effective frequency of 5000 MHz.

The monitoring function is assigned to the chip Nuvoton NCT7904D.

At the bottom of the housing, on the inside we found antennas of wireless interfaces, so it is required to place the mini-computer near the sources of interference.

Two 50 mm fans EVERFLOW RB5015BU are applied to provide the cooling of components. Rated voltage is 12, and the current is 0.60 A, which results in a power of 7.2 W.
