Many users are almost always are surrounded by all sorts of displays that are not just decorations. They are daily used to view different information and in some extent adversely affect our eyes. And due to the modern trend to read using tablet or smartphone the question becomes more acute. As you may notice the printed versions are becoming less popular among young people and those who have chosen the side of electronic literature with its many advantages.

PocketBook InkPad

In this situation an excellent solution is an electronic book (reader), the screen is made according a special technology E Ink, which reduces eye strain. Design and elements layout

PocketBook InkPad

The appearance of PocketBook InkPad is a kind of a branch from the corporate style. New product offers more strict black color of the case, as well as a minimum of bends in its design: there is only one relatively rounded transition from the sides to the rear and slightly rounded corners design. Dimensions are 195.5 x 162.8 x 7.3 mm and weighs 350 grams. However, despite the rather thin case, the device is larger than many counterparts, so it is a long holding with one hand while reading in portrait orientation tires a wrist. However, in this respect, all is individual and for most people this feature will be offset by the advantages of the screen.

PocketBook InkPad

The front side of the device is devoid of individual part with the controls, and as a result the screen now occupies almost the entire area of the face. The display is covered with a protective glass which provides good anti-glare properties. Along the contour it is framed with a rather wide frame (top, bottom and left - 16.5 mm, right - 9 mm) for a comfortable grip when reading.

On the right side the frame has a rubberized insert with width of 15 mm. It is best suitable when reading a book in a vertical orientation. In addition, there are two buttons: "Next" and "Back", which are mainly used for page turning. These controls are pressed quite tight, which prevents accidental pressing during reading.

Above the display is a touch strip to adjust its brightness, which closes a small list of the controls of this model. Thus, we can note the absence of the traditional button [Menu], which is compensated by developed touch controls.

The right side has two slots for fixing corporate cover. The left side of the device is smooth and does not contain any elements.

Below almost right edge of the case there is a 3.5mm audio jack for headphones. Its location can be called very successful, since the wire from the headset does not interfere with reading books or bend in the horizontal orientation of the device. On the opposite side is a button on the gadget with lighting and plug that hides a slot for memory cards microSD (up to 32GB), as well as micro-USB port to connect the device to PC and charger.

The back side and sides of the body PocketBook InkPad are made of dark brown matte, but easily soiled plastic. Closer to the right side is fairly large (175 x 54 mm) rubber inserts, which complements a similar design from the front side. It has a positive effect on ease of use, as well as minimizes the slippage. Also here is a small clamp that holds the corporate cover, which is inserted into the two slots. In general, the practicality of this side is not bad, but the rubberized inserts periodically require wipe from a fine dust and lint.

The overall build quality and body rigidity is quite good. However, we have fixed a few flaws. In particular, the back side has a little gap, and under a slight pressure of the case we hear the creaking. The last feature is more often seen in the bottom of the device. This is a pretty serious drawback, especially for the device with a considerable cost. On the other hand we have seen the similar situations only for test samples. In any case we recommend to pay attention to this aspect.

PocketBook InkPad

E-book PocketBook InkPad boasts of quite unusual for this class of devices screen with a diagonal of 8 inches. This deviation from the accepted standard is a positive step towards creating a comfortable environment for reading of digital content. Especially considering the fact that the increase of display area is not accompanied by increasing eye strain. In addition, a larger display allows you to fit more information on a single page, or increase the font of the text. Display of new item is based on E Ink Pearl technology with a resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels, pixel density of 250 dpi and display up to 16 shades of gray.

The screen is protected by a matt glass cover, but it is subject to mechanical damage and scratches, and therefore requires careful handling. In particular, we do not recommend put the device face down because in addition to the weak protective properties, the display has protruding edges.

Due to the high pixel density the sharpness is very good, but it is slightly inferior to the quality of printed literature. Under a direct and meticulous comparison of device with the book, we note a slight blurring of the boundaries caused by the peculiarities of the technology of the display, as well as the influence of matt glass.

The luminance uses 9 LEDs at the bottom, and here is the light guide layer along the entire display. User has a wide range of adjustment, which allows quickly to choose the desired value, depending on the ambient light.

Touch control does not raises the objections. Sensor substrate handles touches, without any failures or incorrect reading activities.

Proprietary software skin is one of the strengths sides of the model PocketBook InkPad (PocketBook InkPad 840), however, like any other reader of this manufacturer. Its popularity is caused by high functionality and intuitive operation. In addition, increase of screen to 8 inches allows more efficient to use the touch controls, which compensates the absence of the above buttons.

The process of reading books on this reader is close to the ideal in almost all parameters: excellent display of text, the font and sizes can be quickly changed thanks to multitouch actions; the selection and creation of notes to preserve the highlights of reading the book; availability of dictionaries and expanded list of options. The undoubted advantage is support for most popular formats of books: PDF, PDF (DRM), EPUB, EPUB (DRM), DJVU, FB2, FB2.ZIP, DOC, DOCX, RTF, PRC, TCR, TXT, CHM, HTM and HTML. If you start reading a book in the transport, on the way to work and finish at home, in a constantly changing ambient light touch slider designed to adjust the brightness is very convenient. Speed of software is enough, but there were moments when it was not enough. Also note a noticed the problem of firmware, which appeared very rarely: when turning the text was not text displayed, while it was possible to implement the allocation of invisible characters. This aspect was eliminated without much effort, just providing the second page turning.

Most of the main screen is occupied by two icons strips: the one shows the last open books and the second only newly added ones. Both strips are easily scrolled by finger sliding, and search for relevant literature is not difficult. Thus, even the most inexperienced users can easily interact with the device. The status bar contains icons to access the device settings, activate the wireless module Wi-Fi and other features. The opposite side also has a small label of drop-down list that can access the application icon.
