CHIEFTEC BPS-550C2 PSU review and performance testing

The selection of power supply unit is a pretty difficult task. On the one hand, you want to buy a quality device with high performance, and on the other, to invest in an affordable price. If we are talking about the power supply unit for the average gaming configuration, as a rule its budget is limited to$ 100 - 120. Under these conditions, the ideal option is to buy a model with capacity of 500 - 650 W complying with a standard 80 PLUS Bronze. Such a power would be enough to "feed" system with one high-level graphics card, and "bronze" status will give you a guarantee that inside is a modern circuit design and components are of the lowest quality. As for the price, the power supply units of 80 PLUS Bronze standard are much cheaper than their "gold" or "platinum" counterparts.

Power supply unit CHIEFTEC BPS-550C2 is shipped in a cardboard box which provides protection against impact and possible mechanical damage. It is standardized for all solutions of series CHIEFTEC NITRO II 85+, so here are listed only their main features: compliance with energy efficiency standard 80 PLUS Bronze and support of technologies AMD CrossFireX and NVIDIA SLI. Also the front side has image of a device which clearly shows the presence of the modular cable system. In our point of view, this is a great advantage for the power supply units so it is strange that it is not specifically mentioned.

The type of model inside the box is indicated at the end of the box. And the name of the power supply unit specifies its power. In this case it is 550 W. As can be seen from the photos, lineup CHIEFTEC NITRO II 85+ has more efficient solutions producing up to 950 W.

Scope of delivery is standard for devices with mid-range and includes everything you might need for the installation and connection of the device, namely:

  • power cord;
  • screws for mounting;
  • modular cables in a separate bag;
  • manual.

A set of modular cables is not shown in the photo and we will learn it in more detail later.

Model CHIEFTEC BPS-550C2 is made in stainless steel black case with a slightly increased dimension (160 x 150 x 87 mm), which is explained by the presence of modular connectors on the rear panel. Build quality is pretty good: any defects during testing were not found.

The entire top panel takes ventilation grille. Behind it there is a huge 140-mm fan. The front wall has many perforations for air removal. Also here you can find the power outlet and the power off button. The remaining panels are solid.

Cables for power supply of major components (motherboard and processor) are put directly from the device, while the rest are made detachable. Four 6-pin connectors (black) are for designed to connect the peripherals, and two 8-pin (red) for additional power supplying of graphics cards. The usage of a semi-modular cable greatly simplifies the connection of components, and also allows to get avoid unnecessary clutter of cables inside the computer case.

Main 24 power connector ATX has a sectional type. For additional power two 4-pin connectors ATX12V is provided. Power of graphics card is realized via two 6 +2 pin PCIe connectors, which will allow to use one powerful graphics card without the use of off-site adapters.

As for other sockets, their amount is quite enough to connect the necessary periphery including several drives. Connectors PATA and SATA are placed on different cables for more convenience.

Sticker with the specifications is placed on the cover of the power supply unit. Its nominal power is 550 W. Channel +12V is designed as a single line with a loading capacity up to 45 A. Rejection to separate it into a virtual lines is quite right decision of present-day realities. Channels +3.3V and +5V have a maximum total power of 130W and can bear a load of 25 A each which would be sufficient for modern accessories.

According energy efficiency the power supply unit CHIEFTEC BPS-550C2 complies with standard 80 PLUS Bronzel. Let’s remind that the power supplies are standardized 80 PLUS Bronze if their efficiency for a voltage of 230 V at a load of 20%, 50% and 100% does not fall below 81%, 85% and 81% respectively.

Also worth to note a wide input voltage range (100-240 V), which eliminates the external voltage regulators in an unstable power supply.

Disassembly process of the PSU is not difficult. You need to remove two screws on the top cover. Pay the attention for a special sticker “Warranty void if removed”. If you will damage this sticker the warranty of the device will not be available.

140mm fan GLOBE FAN S1202512L with 7 blades is used to cool internal power supply components. It is base on rolling bearing which allows to significantly improve its reliability. Moreover the power of the fan is 8.4 W and this value should provide large air flow and good cooling of PSU components.

To optimize airflow inside the power supply to the fan there is a small transparent plastic plate.

The basis of CHIEFTEC BPS-550C2 is platform produced by well-known manufacturer CWT from series PUQ. It is a circuit design of quite progressive level and completely corresponds to modern components.

In the output there is a filter for smoothing the high-frequency noise emitted by the power supply unit. This node is a standard for high-quality devices, so we are more interested in a set of used elements. In this regard we have no complaints due to the components: two X and four Y-capacitor, two chokes and varistor.

Input current rectification is performed by using a diode assembly GBU1006 with separate radiator to cool it. Next to it there are the components of the module Active Power Factor Correction.

Its power unit includes two powerful field-effect transistors K15A50D and Schottky diode.

The capacitor of high-voltage circuit has parameters 330 uF x 400 and released under the brand AISHI. Despite the Chinese roots its quality is not bad. In the overall ranking it can be compared with the Taiwanese brands CapXon or Su'Scon.

The model CHIEFTEC BPS-550C2 uses single- cycle forward converter with two keys 12N50E. The logic that controls the operation of the device is focused on a small printed circuit board that is installed in an inaccessible place. Therefore to recognize the markings of the chip is rather problematic. We can only assume that it is PFC/PWM-controller of series CM68xx. Also there is overload protection.

Voltage of main line +12 V is formed by synchronous rectifier made by field-effect transistor AP9990GH which are wired to a subsidiary PCB. Such an approach to the low-voltage item is quite practical because it allows to achieve greater efficiency and provide maximum output of +12 V line.

The remaining voltages (+3.3 V and +5 V) are formed from the cannel +12V by using DC-DC-converters. Power section consists of transistors M3004D which are controlled by the PWM controller APW7159. Note that this node is located directly on the board with modular connectors.

Nodes responsible for voltage stabilization and smoothing noise on channels +3.3 V and +5 V, are located on the reverse side of the PCB next to the modular connectors. Note that the noise filtering in this case is carried out exclusively by means of solid state capacitors.

In the output of the 12 V line there are capacitors CapXon with liquid electrolyte (2200 uF x 16 V, up to 105°C) and one solid.

According to technical specifications power supply unit CHIEFTEC BPS-550C2 has the following number of protections: OVP/UVP/OPP/SCP. The unit is based on chip- supervisor Weltrend WT7502V.

Cross-load characteristics

According to ATX12V standard the permissible range of voltage deviations for all power lines is ± 5% of the nominal line.

During cross-load tests the main power lines had following voltages deviations:

  • line +3,3V: from -1% to +2%;
  • line +5V: from -1% to +2%;
  • line +12V: from +1% to +2%.

Separate stabilizing system has demonstrated excellent stability in a given test. On all lines the voltage range was much narrower than the permissible norms, and the most popular of them (+12) was only 1 ... 2%.
