CHIEFTEC CTG-450-80P PSU review and performance testing

During testing of power supply units we often say that the buyer should not save the money during the choice of such devices. After all, the quality of the components applied in the power unit affect on its output characteristics especially at large loads. If we talk about the entry-level PCs, office systems or multimedia configurations, in most case PSU has less demanding requirements especially regarding the power. And the price in such cases plays an important role. The market is full of solutions that match above noted requirements and CHIEFTEC CTG-450-80P PSU is one of them.

Power supply unit CHIEFTEC CTG-450-80P is supplied as OEM-version without a box. Also delivery set does not include power cable and other components. But in our case in addition to the device we have noticed a small bag with four fastening screws.

CHIEFTEC CTG-450-80P model has a standard design and typical dimensions for low-power devices 140x150x87 mm. The entire top panel is taken with ventilation grille with 120mm fan behind it. The front wall has perforation holes intended for heat removal. Also here are rendered the power outlet and power shutdown button.

All cables are ejected straight from the device. It is quite standard situation for users who want to build the system as this fact allows to reduce the final cost. As you can see most of the cables don’t have even nylon cable armature.

Main 24 power connector ATX has a solid type. For additional power 4-pin connector ATX12V is provided. Cable length including these sockets is around 45cm and this will be more than enough for hidden cabling in cases of Middle Tower format. For additional power of graphics cards there is one 6-pin PCIe connector.

As for other sockets, their amount is quite enough to connect the necessary periphery including several drives. Connectors PATA and SATA are placed on different cables for more convenience.

One of the side walls has a label with specifications of the device. +12 V channel power is 350 W which is approximately 78% of the power supply nominal capacity. There is a division into two 20 A lines. Lines +3.3 V and +5 V have a maximum total capacity of 120 W and capable of withstanding a load of 24 A and 20 A respectively which will be enough for modern accessories. Power supply unit doesn’t have a certificate of 80 PLUS directive as in addition to necessary efficiency level the PSU must correspond to other criterions such as operation at 110V voltage. As you can learn from the label this model is focused only to electricity supply network with a voltage of 230 V. However a regular user of our country hardly will be interested in all these details, as the most important value for him is efficiency. And the emblem “80 + Only 230V” hints that the level of device energy efficiency in peak point reaches at least 80%. Let's try to deal with this point during testing.

Disassembly process of the PSU is not difficult. You need to remove four screws on the top cover. Pay the attention for a special sticker “Warranty void if removed”. If you will damage this sticker the warranty of the device will not be available.

To optimize airflow inside the power supply to the fan there is a small transparent plastic plate.

The basis of CHIEFTEC CTG-450-80P is updated low-cost platform of High Power (SIRFA) Company. It has an index “A16”. Its previous version can be seen in SilverStone SST-ST50F-ES.

Despite the fact that the circuitry applies to low-cost class, it has all modern characteristic of power supply units. At the input there is EMI filter for smoothing of high-frequency noise emitted to network by power supply network. It includes all necessary elements: four Y and three X-capacitors, two choke coil and varistor. The producer didn’t save on the varistor unlike many companies for low-cost solutions. Also the filter includes CM02X chip for additional electric power saving in waiting mode.

Rectifying diode bridge is mounted on a common radiator which cools the power unit (transistor KF13N50 and diode UGZ8JF).
We couldn’t learn the manufacture of high-voltage circuit capacitor but regarding the color most likely it is a Taiwanese company Su'scon. The capacity of this element is 180 uF.

CHIEFTEC CTG-450-80P uses forward converter with two keys KF13N5. Next to them you can see another force element 2N60L. It is involved in the formation of stand-by power line +5VSB. All control logic is located on the reverse side of the PCB.

Low-voltage part is organized according the traditional low-cost basis. For voltage rectification instead of transistors less efficient diode assemblies are used (two MOSPEC S30D45C and one MBR30H100CT). And instead of separate voltage stabilization a group method is applied. This approach affects the final characteristics of the power supply but allows to reduce its cost.
A thick aluminum cooler with divided top is used for cooling of power components.

In filtration unit of output voltages there are Su'scon capacitors. According to the quality they are comparable with the Taiwanese brands Teapo and CapXon. All elements belong to a high temperature series (105°C).

According to technical specifications power supply unit CHIEFTEC CTG-450-80P has the following number of protections: OVP/UVP/OPP/SCP. For solutions based on a mass audience, it's a pretty good indicator. Output voltage control is based on supervisor chip HY510N.

Cross-load characteristics

According to ATX12V standard the permissible range of voltage deviations for all power lines is ± 5% of the nominal line.

During cross-load tests the main power lines had following voltages deviations:

  • line +3,3V: from -3% to +3%;
  • line +5V: from -3% to +5%;
  • line +12V: from -3% to +4%.

In spite of simple unit organization dealing for voltage stabilization, it copes with the tasks. The maximum sagging on the most popular lines of +12V during the experiment has reached 3% and this is not a critical value.

Noise and pulsing over the voltage range

According to ATX12V standard the following permissible norms of pulsing level are used (peak-to-peak):

  • lines +3,3V and +5V: 50 mV;
  • line +12V: 120 mV.

Filter unit of output voltages left worse impression. On lines +3.3V and +12V amplitude excursion (peak-to-peak) does not exceed 25 mV and 100 mV respectively which corresponds with the criteria of the standard ATX12V. But on line +5V at area of high loads there are visible pulsations reaching 75 mV and sometimes 100 mV which is a bad result.
