Power supply CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P: review and testing

PSU series CHIEFTEC A-80 takes place in the market for a long time. Over these years it has established itself as a compromise option between price and capabilities, so the solution to the index «CTG» are quite popular among users with a small amount of money for the purchase of a PC. Manufacturers are required to adhere to a predetermined pricing policy and update the range of lineup from time to time. These technologies are in a process and competitors are on the alert.

This year the series CHIEFTEC A-80 has a kind of reincarnation: the old CHIEFTEC CTG-400 / 450 / 500 / 550 / 600-80P were replaced with new ones. However, the names are the same and as a result we have some confusion. Now on the market you can find two, at first glance identical power supplies, but with different characteristics. It is unclear step of the company. By the way, the series of CHIEFTEC A-80 has completely new model called CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P. And it will be described in today’s’ review.

Package and content

CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P

Power unit CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P comes in a cardboard box that provides protection against shock and possible mechanical damages. It is rich in bright printing in black and blue colors, but without informative component. The fact is that in order to save the packaging is uniform for all solutions of series CHIEFTEC A80, so here are specified only their common features: efficiency at level of 85% and the ability to work in electric networks with a supply voltage of 230 V.

CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P

What exactly is inside the model is indicated at the end of the box. And the name of the power supply can be found already and its power. In this case it is 650 watts. Not exclude that will soon appear and OEM-versions of these models. At least the previous versions exist on the market as a OEM-versions, and in the format of "box" solutions.

CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P

Scope of delivery is standard for mid-range devices and includes all the essentials that you may need in the process of installing and connecting the device:

  • AC power cord;
  • secure screws;
  • user’s manual.

Design

CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P

Externally CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P virtually has no different from previous versions of a series of power supplies CHIEFTEC A80. Even the dimensions of the body remained the same 140 x 150 x 87 mm. The only element that specifies a new model is the presence of blue-black stickers with the name of the series. Previously it was absent.

In order to save money the manufacturer has decided not to cover the power supply with an additional layer of paint. But the body is assembled in a fairly high quality: applied thick steel; panels’ edge is well handled, and they fit bear against together.

CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P

The entire upper panel is covered by ventilation grille. Behind it you can find a 120-mm fan. The front wall is dotted with perforations for air removal. Here is the power outlet and the power button. The remaining panels are solid.

CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P

The rear wall has a conventional configuration also. There is only one small hole for the power cords. Non-modular system allows a little more to reduce the final cost of the device. Although if its presence is an important factor for you, the lineup CHIEFTEC A80 has appropriate solutions: CHIEFTEC CTG-550C, CHIEFTEC CTG-650C and CHIEFTEC CTG-750C.

The motherboard power cable is braided. All other cables do not have such covering.  In our opinion the manufacture should not be so mean. In fact, the savings a cheap, but the disadvantage of connectivity and laying the cables is increased. In addition, competitors start to apply cables in form of strips. Against this background the cables bunch out of the case CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P looks a bit archaic.

Main power connectors have the following configuration: nondemountable 24-pin ATX and 4+4-pin ATX12V. Power is supplied to the graphics cards via two 6+2-pin PCIes, which will allow to use a powerful graphics card without the application of third-party adapters.

Regarding other sockets, they are also sufficient to connect all the necessary peripherals of the PC. For added convenience connectors PATA and SATA are located on different cables.

All available types of connectors and cable lengths are given in the table below:

Now let's take a closer look at the technical characteristics of the power supply. Its nominal power is 650 W. The label indicates that this value is the maximum.

We were little surprised by organization 12V channel: here it is divided into two lines. Many manufacturers have already refused to from this practice, and the company CHIEFTEC has in its arsenal a few low-end models with a dedicated +12V line. At least consider recently tested PSUs CHIEFTEC GPA-500B8 or CHIEFTEC GPS-700A8. It is good that each of the 12V line is designed for a current of 26 A, and therefore to overload them under real conditions would be extremely difficult. In theory this option is possible but it would be quite unusual load. By the way, the total power of channel +12V is 585 W, which is 90% of the rated power supply. As you can see it is a pretty good indicator taking into account the cost of CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P. Lines +3.3V and +5V have a maximum total power of 120 W and capable of withstanding a load of 22 A. For a standard PC components that would be sufficient.

This model did not pass the certification for compliance with e 80 PLUS directiv, however, for supply systems with 230V level of efficiency can reach 85%. At least this information is indicated on the logo with the inscription «85+ 230V only» on the label.

Also worth noting is that the model CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P is designed to work only at an electric voltage of 230 V. It is clear that small deviations from this value won’t affect the stability of its operation.

Internal device

CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P

The dismantling process of CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P is standard: you need to unscrew the screws securing the top cover. We draw your attention to the presence of a special sticker with the inscription “Warranty void if removed”.

120mm 7-blade fan Globe Fan S1202512L is used to cool internal components. It is based on the plain bearing and it is not the best option in terms of reliability. However, the use of cheaper fan is quite typical for the price segment, where the power supply CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P takes place.

CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P

CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P is built on a common model with CHIEFTEC APS-650CB platform (NO-761). Its OEM-manufacturer is the company High Power (SIRFA). However, here we have a new revision of circuitry REV: 04 (in CHIEFTEC APS-650CB - REV: 01).

CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P

CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P

At the input is a filter to smooth out the high noise frequency emitted in the power supply network. All components are in place (two X-capacitors, two Y-capacitors, two chocks and varistor). They securely isolated from each other, so there is no doubt that its own task will be done with "excellent" point.

We could not learn the marking of diode bridge for rectifying the input voltage. We can only say that it does not provide a separate radiator for heat dissipation.

CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P

Although in general the passive cooling system of the model CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P deserves the attention. Instead of thin plates typically installed in the budgetary solutions, here we can three huge aluminum radiators with branched tip. Thus, each group of power components has its own cooler, which is quite the right solution from a technical point of view.

CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P

Since CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P can be safely attributed to modern power supplies, it has an active module of power factor correction (APFC). Its power unit consists of a field-effect transistor IPS FTW20N50A and diode NXP BYC10-600. PWM controller APFC is soldered on the back side of the PCB.

CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P

Producer of the input capacitor (330 x 400 uF, operating temperature up to 85°C) is a Taiwanese company Kuan Kun Electronic Enterprise, better known under the brand Su'scon. The quality of its products can be considered as average.

CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P

The main transmitter is built on a conventional half-bridge scheme with two keys IPS ITP15N50A, which are cooled by a separate aluminum radiator. Also it has secured another force element, namely UTC 2N60L used in standby power supply (+5Vsb).

CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P

Rectification of the output voltage is realized by using six diode arrays, which are less effective in comparison with transistors. On the other hand, such topology is more common in the production and cheaper. Voltage supply stabilization is organized on group principle: separate choke for line +3.3V and common for channels +5V and +12V.

CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P

The pulsations smoothing is provided by electrolytic capacitors of the same brand Su'scon. However, in this case they belong to high series (up to 105°C). It is commendable that the manufacturer does not skimp on the amount of the elements.

CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P

According to the technical specifications, the model CHIEFTEC CTG-650-80P has the following range of protection: OVP/UVP/OPP/SCP. It is a pretty good indicator for power supply based on the mass audience. The node is based on chip-supervisor Sitronix (Infinno) ST9S313A-DAG.
